The improvement effect of the external concrete to stability of the core steel-tube was demonstrated by the steel-tube replacement ratio through experimental study. The test results show that, with the steel-tube replacement ratio increasing, the ultimate bearing capacity of composite columns increased correspondingly, and the ductility of composite columns was improved obviously also. Therefore, the steel-tube replacement ratio should be involved in the formula for calculating the ultimate bearing capacity of composite columns. By finite element method and regression analysis, the slenderness ratio is amended by the steel-tube replacement ratio and the calculation results of the eccentric compression bearing capacity agreed well with the test results.

This paper adopts the method of steel tube wall thickness and strength reduction to simulate corrosion damage. The numerical model of the square concrete-filled steel tube long column (SCFST-LC) under eccentric compression after acid rain corrosion is established in the finite element software, ABAQUS. The reliability and accuracy of the model are verified by comparing it with published relevant experimental results. The failure mode, load-deformation curve, and ultimate compressive load were analysed. Following that, the impacts of section size, yield strength of the steel tube, axial compressive strength of concrete, steel ratio, slenderness ratio, and load eccentricity on its ultimate compressive load are comprehensively investigated. The results demonstrate that the ultimate compressive load of the SCFST-LC decreases significantly with the increase in corrosion rate. The corrosion rate increases from 10 to 40%, and the ultimate bearing capacity decreases by 37.6%. Its ultimate bearing capacity can be enhanced due to the increase in section size, material strength, and steel ratio. In contrast, the ascending slenderness ratio and load eccentricity has harmful effects on the ultimate compressive load of the specimens. Finally, a simplified formula for the axial compressive load of the SCFST-LC under eccentric compression after acid rain corrosion is proposed. The calculation accuracy is high and the deviation of the results is basically within 15%, which is in good agreement with the numerical simulation results.

Seven axially square CFRP steel tubular confined recycled aggregate concrete long columns were experimentally investigated to study their static behavior. The influence of the slenderness ratio, recycled coarse aggregate replacement ratio, layers of CFRP jackets effect on the performance of axial compression. The test results show that the higher the recycled coarse aggregate content and the slenderness ratio, the greater the specimen ultimate bearing capacity is smaller, and the more the layers of CFRP jackets, the greater the specimen ultimate bearing capacity.

To investigate the applicability of the methods for calculating the bearing capacity of high-strength steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) composite columns according to specifications and the effect of confinement of stirrups and steel on the bearing capacity of SRC columns. The axial compression tests were conducted on 10 high-strength SRC columns and 4 ordinary SRC columns. The influences of the steel strength grade, the steel ratio, the types of stirrups and slenderness ratio on the bearing capacity of such members were examined. The analysis results indicate that using high-strength steel and improving the steel ratio can significantly enhance the bearing capacity of the SRC columns. When the slenderness ratio increases dramatically, the bearing capacity of the SRC columns plummets. As the confinement effect of the stirrups on the concrete improves, the utilization ratio of the high-strength steel in the SRC columns increases. Furthermore, the results calculated by AISC360-19(U.S.), EN1994-1-1-2004 (Europe), and JGJ138-2016(China) are too conservative compared with test results. Finally, a modified formula for calculating the bearing capacity of the SRC columns is proposed based on the confinement effect of the stirrups and steel on concrete. The results calculated by the modified formula and the finite element modeling results based on the confinement effect agree well with the test results.

At present, the relevant researches of Glulam columns in China are mainly restricted to short columns. In order to study the mechanical properties of long columns under axial loading, an experimental study on five different slenderness ratios of Larch Glulam columns was carried out. With slenderness ratio changing, the variations of experimental data such as axial strain, lateral deflection at mid-height, ultimate bearing capacity, and peak strain were comparatively analyzed. The failure pattern and failure mechanism of long columns were discussed. The results indicate that the ultimate bearing capacity of Larch Glulam columns gradually decreases as the slenderness radio increases and the failure mode is gradually converted from strength failure to instability failure. The ultimate load reduction factor is obtained by regression analysis based on the experiment results of Larch Glulam short columns. The basis for design and application of Larch Glulam columns are provided.

Overall 12 specimens were experimentally investigated in this paper to study the hysteretic behaviors of the concrete-filled square CFRP-steel tubular (S-CFRP-CFST) beam-columns. The test results indicated that CFRP can provide transverse confinement effect and longitudinal strengthening effect for the concrete filled square steel tubular (S-CFST) beam-columns effectively and the local buckling of the steel tube is deferred. The hysteretic load-deflection curves and the hysteretic moment-curvature curves at the mid-span of all the specimens are generally plump, and it shows these specimens have good hysteretic performance. In the later loading period, the load bearing capacity drops.

Based on the characteristics of the special-shaped concrete-filled steel tubes and consideration of material nonlinearity of constitutive relation, stimulation of 6 T-shaped thin-walled ribbed and un-ribbed concrete-filled steel tube short columns is implemented, as well as comparable analysis of stress, strain, displacement and bearing capacity, through the finite element analysis software ANSYS. The result indicates that the rib can effectively improve the ductility, delaying the buckling occurs, which enhances the core concrete confinement effect, so as the stimulated ultimate bearing capacity which is greater than nominal ultimate bearing capacity.

In order to look into the causes of fire response and post-fire bearing capacity of the steel tubular columns protected with different materials, the fire test was conducted for a set of circular steel tubes protected with different materials such as gypsum fireproof panel, bamboo plywood and the ordinary lumber core plywood, and the steel tube without any protective material. The fire response temperature of surface of steel tubes is measured and the axial compressive bearing capacity of the specimens after fire are tested and analyzed. The test results show that gypsum fireproof panel has the best fire protection characteristics, the ordinary lumber core plywood and bamboo plywood can also retard rising of the surface temperature of the steel tubes during the initial 35min although they are combustible materials. It is found that the post-fire bearing capacity of the steel tubes protected with different materials varies evidently, and the maximum value of response temperature has the greatest effect.

The post-fire performance of a set of ceramsite concrete filled steel tabular short columns (noted as CCSSC) after exposure to fire are experimentally studied. Effect of the maximum value of fire response temperatures and geometrical parameters of the composite columns on the strength and ductility of the specimens were especially discussed. The test results show that the specimens of CCSSC have higher post-fire bearing capacity and better ductility, and both of maximum response temperature and geometrical parameters of the specimens presented here have great effect on the post-fire bearing capacity and ductility of ceramsite concrete-filled steel short columns after exposure to fire.

This paper investigates the eccentric compression performance of high-strength steel reinforced concrete (SRC) columns. In addition, the feasibility of the calculation codes used for the load-carrying capacity of these columns is verified by eccentric compression tests on 10 high-strength SRC columns with Q460 and Q690 steels and two normal SRC columns with Q235 steel. Moreover, the influence of the steel strength, relative eccentricity, steel ratio, and stirrup spacing on the bearing capacity and ductility of the specimens is analyzed. It was found that the bearing capacity and ductility of the specimens significantly increases when the steel strength increases from 276.5 MPa to 774.2 MPa; the bearing capacity of the Q690 SRC column is slightly higher than that of the Q460 SRC column. In addition, the ductility coefficient of the Q690 SRC columns is significantly higher than that of the Q460 SRC columns. It was also found that increasing the eccentricity and steel ratio can improve the ductility of the specimens and the smaller stirrup spacing can enlarge the contribution of Q690 steel under the ultimate bearing capacity. It is demonstrated that Eurocode 4-2004 and AISC360-16 codes significantly underestimate the test results. In contrast, JGJ138-2016 slightly underestimates the test results when the relative eccentricity is 0.2 but overestimates the test results when the relative eccentricity is 0.6. Furthermore, in order to maximize the contribution of Q690 steel under ultimate bearing capacity, the expanded parameter analysis is carried out using a finite element model. Following the analysis results, the suggestions for designing high-strength SRC columns under eccentric load are provided.

To investigate the bearing capacity of the hollow Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) pipe-concrete-steel tube composite long columns subjected to eccentrical compression load, 33 hollow GFRP pipe-concrete-steel tube composite long columns have been designed. The slenderness ratio (λ), compressive strength of concrete cube (fcu), eccentricity (e) and so on are the main parameters. Based on constitutive models for steel, GFRP and confined concrete, numerical simulation of the hollow GFRP pipe-concrete-high strength steel tube composite long columns has been carried out by using software ABAQUS. The rationality of the constitutive models and modeling method has been verified by comparing the experimental and simulated load-displacement curves. The influence of different parameters on the mechanical behavior of this kind of column has been investigated. Results show that with the increasing of t1, t2 and fcu, the ultimate eccentrical compression bearing capacity of the specimen increases. With the increasing of e, the ultimate displacement of the specimens increases, while the ultimate eccentrical compression bearing capacity decreases. The eccentricity has a significant influence on the ultimate eccentrical compression bearing capacity. With the increasing of λ, the ultimate eccentrical compression bearing capacity of the specimens gradually decreases. The specimens suffer from ductile failure. The formula of the ultimate eccentrical compression bearing capacity of the composite columns is obtained by statistical regression. The study can provide theoretical support for the application of the composite columns in practical engineering.
