Research on Tunnel Effect of Carbon Black-Filled Cement-Based Composites

Based on the tunnel effect, a mathematic model was set up to describe the tunnel resistivity of carbon black-filled cement-based composites (CBCC). The relationships between the tunnel resistivity and the microstructure parameters, the motion parameters of carriers as well as the external electric field strength in the CBCC were established by using the model. Furthermore, the inherent relation between the tunnel resistivity and carbon black volume fraction was discovered. Moreover, the effect of carbon black volume fraction on tunnel effect of CBCC was investigated through experiments. The theoretical results obtained from the model were in agreement with the experimental data, which proved the rationality of the tunnel resistivity model of CBCC.

Experiments were conducted to determine the pressure rise that results from either the combustion of a localized gas volume or the expansion of a pressurized gas volume adjacent to an inert gas in a closed vessel. The experiments consisted of either pressurized air or the combustion of stoichiometric and fuel-lean hydrogen–air mixtures compressing an inert gas. The pressure rise in the inert gas was measured as a function of either the volume fraction or the initial pressure of the expanding gas. Helium, nitrogen, air and carbon dioxide were tested to explore the effect of inert gas heat capacity on the pressure rise. The final pressure of the inert gas increased with the volume fraction and initial pressure of the expanding gas, and was influenced to a lesser extent by the heat capacity of the inert gas. A model was assessed using the experimental data, and the theoretical results were consistent with the observed trends. This model and other published models were assessed and compared using prior data for localized gas combustion surrounded by an inert gas and the partial combustion of homogeneous methane–air mixtures.

Breakthrough curves of CF3Cl on carbon black and of cyclo-hexane on active charcoal have been measured under elution adsorption dynamic conditions. For linear and non-linear adsorption dynamic modes, the experimental data and theoretical results calculated according to the layer of equilibrium adsorption (LEA) model closely coincide.

Polymer composites filled with thermally conductive particles are widely used in thermo-electronic industry, and the prediction of effective properties is still important for design and use of composites. Thus, we propose a lattice Boltzmann model to predict the effective thermal conductivity of composites filled with carbon black. First, a method for reconstructing numerical material having filler distribution characteristic similar to that of actual material is introduced, and the process for obtaining the phase function and the volume fraction of grain filler is described. The energy transport governing equation is then solved through the two-dimensional discrete structure by using a lattice Boltzmann model. The effective thermal conductivity of two-phase composite is expressed by the conductivity of each phase and the temperature distribution in discrete rectangle. The resultant prediction is compared with theoretical and experimental data and indicates good agreement with experimental data.

The mechanical model of Tube Solid Granules Medium Forming (SGMF) is simplified to three pressure-transfer models: uniform pressure model, unequal diameter model and tube SGMF model. Combining the conclusions of the SGMF investigation and the theories of powder mechanics, lateral pressure-transfer regularity of SGMF under high pressure has been investigated and the mathematical formulas of pressure distribution have been obtained. According to the theoretical analysis, the lateral pressure and the depth of solid granules can be expressed by a segmented function. An experimental set-up has been designed and manufactured to evaluate the theoretical results, good correlation has been observed between the theoretical results and the experimental data.

AbstractNegative refraction of acoustic waves is demonstrated through underwater experiments conducted at ultrasonic frequencies on a 3D locally resonant acoustic metafluid made of soft porous silicone-rubber micro-beads suspended in a yield-stress fluid. By measuring the refracted angle of the acoustic beam transmitted through this metafluid shaped as a prism, we determine the acoustic index to water according to Snell’s law. These experimental data are then compared with an excellent agreement to calculations performed in the framework of Multiple Scattering Theory showing that the emergence of negative refraction depends on the volume fraction $$\Phi$$ Φ of the resonant micro-beads. For diluted metafluid ($$\Phi =3\%$$ Φ = 3 % ), only positive refraction occurs whereas negative refraction is demonstrated over a broad frequency band with concentrated metafluid ($$\Phi =17\%$$ Φ = 17 % ).

AbstractIn the paper, a fractional-order RLC circuit is presented. The circuit is realized by using a fractional-order capacitor. This is realized by using carbon black dispersed in a polymeric matrix. Simulation results are compared with the experimental data, confirming the suitability of applying this new device in the circuital implementation of fractional-order systems.

Stringent emission legislations and growing health concerns have contributed to the evolution of soot modeling in diesel engines from simple empirical relations to methods involving detailed kinetics and complex aerosol dynamics. In this paper, four different soot models have been evaluated for the high temperature, high pressure combusting dodecane spray cases of engine combustion network (ECN) spray A which mimics engine-relevant conditions. The soot models considered include an empirical, a multistep, a method of moments based, and a discrete sectional method soot model. Two experimental cases with ambient oxygen volume of 21% and 15% have been modeled. A good agreement between simulations and experiments for vapor penetration and heat release rate has been obtained. Quasi-steady soot volume fraction contours for the four soot models have been compared with experiments. Contours of the species and source terms involved in soot modeling have also been compared for a better understanding of soot processes. The empirical soot model results in higher magnitude and spread of soot due to a lack of modeling framework for oxidation through OH species. Among the four models studied, the multistep soot model has been observed to provide the most promising agreement with the experimental data in terms of distribution of soot and location of peak soot volume fraction. Due to a two-way coupling of soot models, the detailed models predict an upstream location for soot as compared to the multi-step soot model which is one way coupled. A significant difference (of an order of magnitude) in the concentration of PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) precursor between multistep and detailed soot models has been observed because of precursor consumption due to the coupling of detailed soot models with chemical kinetics. It is recommended that kinetic schemes, especially those concerning PAH, be validated with experimental data with a kinetics-coupled soot model.

A new system of thermoset styrene-based shape-memory polymer (SMP) filled with carbon black (CB) is investigated. To realize the electroactive stimuli of SMP, the electrical conductivity of SMP filled with various amounts of CB is characterized. The percolation threshold of electrically conductive SMP filled with CB is about 3% (volume fraction of CB), which is much lower than many other electrically conductive polymers. When applying a voltage of 30V, the shape recovery process of SMP/CB(10 vol%) can be realized in about 100s. In addition, the thermomechanical properties are also characterized by differential scanning calorimetery (DSC).

In this paper, the requirements for an accurate 3D model of the tooth contact-line load distribution in real spur gears are summarized. The theoretical results (obtained by F.E.M.) for the point load compliance of wide-faced spur gear teeth are set out. These values compare well with experimental data obtained from tests on a large spur gear (18 mm module, 18 teeth).

Electrical conductive carbon black-filled cement-based composites are significant as multifunctional structural materials. Double percolation in carbon black-filled cement-based composites involves both carbon black particle percolation and cement paste percolation, which has great effect on the resistivity of composites. Based on double percolation theory, the influences of sand-binder ratio and carbon black volume fraction on the resistivity of carbon black-filled cement-based composites are investigated. The results show that besides carbon black volume fraction, sand-binder ratio is a key factor affecting double percolation behavior in carbon black-filled cement-based composites. At a fixed carbon black content in overall mortar, with increasing sand-binder ratio, the cement paste percolation though aggregate phase increases due to high obstruction of aggregate but the carbon black particle percolation in cement paste decreases. This is because that the microstructure of aggregate is impenetrable so that the carbon black particles are limited in cement paste, that is, the carbon black content in paste is compacted and large amount of conductive paths are generated by lapped adjacent carbon black particles in paste. The double percolation in the electrical conduction in carbon black-filled cement-based composites is observed when the carbon black volume fraction is 7.5% and sand-binder ratio is 1.4, and its resistivity is only 3200 Ωcm, so that a sand-binder ratio of 1.4 and 7.5% carbon black volume fraction or more are recommended for attaining high conductivity with a compromise between workability and conductivity.
