This paper summarizes the function of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) in cement-based materials, focusing on the achievements of the authors in recent years. The effect of SBR on the properties of cement mortar is introduced, i.e. the workability of fresh mortar such as the water-reduction and water-retention effects of SBR, the mechanical properties of hardened mortar such as the tensile bond strength, flexural and compressive strengths, flexibility and anti-impacting capacity, the waterproofness such as the capillary water adsorption and anti-penetration capacity, the microstructure such as the matrix structure and interface structure, and the cement hydration such as the calcium silicate hydrates, calcium aluminate hydrates and polymerization of [SiO4]4- tetrahedron.

ABSTRACT Portland cement is extensively used as a binder in concrete production. However, with Portland cement production, 5% of the natural resources used in this production are consumed, constituting 5–7% of the total CO2 emission. In order to mitigate the environmental problems associated with cement production, styrene-butadiene rubber latex was used as cement replacement up to 20%. In this study, compressive strength, flexural strength, unit weight, water absorption, open porosity, water sorptivity and the chloride ion permeability of Portland cement mortar mixtures modified by styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) polymeric latex were investigated. For this purpose, the sand/cement ratio and the water/cement ratio were kept constant as 3/1 and 0.5, respectively. In addition to the control mixture containing no polymer, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 20 wt.% of cement was replaced with SBR. In this way, seven mortar mixtures were prepared. Mixed curing (wet cure and dry cure) method was applied to the mortar specimens. Results showed that up to a 5% replacement level, it is possible to improve the mechanical properties of cement mortars with SBR latex addition. However, at a 10% and 20% replacement level, SBR had a significant detrimental effect on the mechanical properties of polymer modified mortars. However, the transport properties decreased with the incorporation rate of SBR latex and the detrimental effect of SBR replacement was more pronounced in 20% SBR mortar mixtures.

Styrene-butadiene rubber increased the piezoresistivity effect of CB/PC mortar. Both positive and negative piezoresistivity occurred in mortars during compression. The mechanism was explained by using both the tunneling effect and capacitance effect.

Attapulgite (AT)/natural rubber (NR)/ styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) nanocomposites have been prepared after attapulgite was modified by different coupling agent. The treatment of AT caused the adhesion between AT nanorods and the nature rubber/styrene-butadiene rubber was improved, which enhanced the tensile properties of the matrix. The tensile strength of composites attained 15.6 MPa after AT was modified by 3%wt Si-69 coupling with addition of 20 phr.

The significant factor that determines the improvement of properties in rubber by the incorporation of nanoclay is its distribution in the rubber matrix. The simple mixing of nonpolar rubber and organically modified nanoclay will not contribute for the good dispersion of nanofiller in the rubbery matrix. Hence a polar rubber like epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) can be used as a compatibilizer in order to obtain a better dispersion of the nanoclay in the matrix polymer. Epoxidized natural rubber and organically modified nanoclay composites (EC) were prepared by solution mixing. The nanoclay employed in this study is Cloisite 20A. The obtained nanocomposites were incorporated in styrene butadiene-rubber (SBR) compounds with sulphur as a curing agent. The morphology observed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) shows that the nanoclay is highly intercalated in ENR, and further incorporation of EC in SBR matrix leads to partial exfoliation of the nanoclay. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis showed an increase in storage modulus and lesser damping characteristics for the compounds containing EC loading in SBR matrix. In addition, these compounds showed improvement in the mechanical properties.

The effect of coated rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2) and a disazopyrazolone dye (azo dye) on the mechanism and the kinetic of photo-oxidation of unvulcanized styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) composites under accelerated UV-visible irradiation (λ > 290 nm at 35 °C) has been investigated using several techniques such as infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible spectrophotometry, and gel fraction measurements. Different photo-products resulting from the photo-ageing such as alcohol, ketone, or acids as well as cross-linked network were identified. The incorporation of TiO2 rutile and an azo dye into the matrix did not modify the mechanism of photo-oxidation. However, they have a significant effect on the kinetic of photoproducts accumulation. Both fillers protect the matrix from photo-oxidation. TiO2 rutile, thanks to its inorganic coating at the surface, dissipates part of the UV-visible radiation received by the polymer. The activity mechanism of azo dye consisting of a combination of its function as an antioxidant and light absorber, presents a better stabilizing effect compared with TiO2 rutile.

Abstract Functional nanocomposites based on a blend of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) as the matrix reinforced by a hybrid nanofiller system of graphene oxide nanosheets (GOn) and ferromagnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) at different weight ratios (3.75:1.25; 2.5:2.5 and 1.25:3.75) were successfully prepared and characterized to determine the effect of nanofillers hybridization in improving the structural, mechanical, dielectric/electrical, magnetic and thermal properties of a polymer blend (PVDF-SBR) for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications. Due to the synergy between both nanofillers, it was found that the Young’s modulus of the nanocomposite containing 5 wt.% of the hybrid nanofiller was significantly improved (87%), while the strain at yield remained constant due to the low particle content and the rubbery effect of the SBR copolymer. In addition, the degradation temperature of the matrix was shifted from 464°C to 472 °C with the addition of 2.5:2.5 of GOn:Fe3O4. Finally, the hybrid reinforcement also had a positive effect on the electrical and magnetic properties of the nanocomposites with an improvement that exceeds 30%. By careful selection of synthetic techniques and understanding/exploiting the unique physics of the polymeric nanocomposites in such materials, novel functional polymer-inorganic nanocomposites can be designed and fabricated for new interesting in magneto applications such as superparamagnetism, electromagnetic wave absorption, and electromagnetic interference shielding.

This paper tested the capillary water absorption, impermeability and cracking of cement mortars modified with three polymers respectively and founded the correlation of cracking with the waterproof performance. The results show that with the polymer content increasing, especially as the polymer/cement ratio (mp/mc) increases from 0% to 5%, the reduction in the capillary water absorption and the penetration depth of water into mortar is significant. When the mp/mc is more than 15%, the increase of the mp/mc in all mortars has little effect on the capillary water absorption and the penetration depth. For the purpose of reducing the cracking weighted value, the styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) dispersion and the styrene-acrylic copolymer (SAE) powder are superior to the SAE dispersion. Regardless what kinds of polymers, the capillary water absorption and the penetration depth of water into mortar show exponential growth with the increasing cracking weighted value.
