Submicrocrystalline Structures and Tensile Behaviour of Stainless Steels Subjected to Large Strain Deformation and Subsequent Annealing

Tensile behaviour of two steels with submicrocrystalline structures, i.e. a 304-type austenitic steel and an Fe-27%Cr-9%Ni austenitic-ferritic steel, was studied. The starting materials were subjected to large strain rolling and swaging to a total strain of ∼4 at ambient temperature. The severe deformation resulted in a partial martensitic transformation and the development of highly elongated austenite/ferrite (sub) grains aligned along the deformation axis. In the cold worked state, the transverse grain/subgrain size was about 100 nm in the 304-type steel and about 150 nm in the Fe-27%Cr-9%Ni steel. The grain refinement by severe plastic deformation resulted in increase of ultimate tensile strength to 2000 MPa and 1800 MPa in 304-type and Fe-27%Cr-9%Ni steels, respectively. The phase transformation and recrystallization took place concurrently upon annealing, leading to the development of submicrocrystalline structure consisting of austenite and ferrite grains. No significant softening took place under annealing at temperatures below 600°C. The tensile strength was 1920 MPa in 304-type steel and 1710 MPa in Fe-27%Cr-9%Ni steel after annealing at 500°C for 2 hours.

The development of ultrafine grained structures in 316L and 304-type austenitic stainless steels subjected to large strain cold working and subsequent annealing and their effect on mechanical properties were studied. The cold rolling was accompanied by a mechanical twinning and a partial martensitic transformation and resulted in the development of elongated austenite/ferrite grains with the transverse size of about 50 nm at a strain of 4. The grain refinement by large strain cold working resulted in an increase of tensile strength above 2000 MPa in the both steels. Annealing at temperatures above 500°C resulted in ferrite-austenite reversion. However, the transverse grain/subgrain size remained on the level of about 100-150 nm after annealing at temperatures up to 700°C.

The article focuses on the results from recent experimental of severe plastic deformation of low carbon (LC) steel and medium carbon (MC) steel performed at increased temperatures. The grain refinement of ferrite respectively ferrite-pearlite structure is described. While LC steel was deformed by ECAP die (ε = 3) with a channel angle φ = 90° the ECAP severe deformation of MC steel was conducted with die channel angle of 120° (ε = 2.6 - 4). The high straining in LC steel resulted in extensively elongated ferrite grains with dense dislocation network and randomly recovered and polygonized structure was observed. The small period of work hardening appeared at tensile deformation. On the other side, the warm ECAP deformation of MC steel in dependence of increased effective strain resulted in more progressive recovery process. In interior of the elongated ferrite grains the subgrain structure prevails with dislocation network. As straining increases the dynamic polygonization and recrystallization became active to form mixture of polygonized subgrain and submicrocrystalline structure. The straining and moderate ECAP temperature caused the cementite lamellae fragmentation and spheroidzation as number of passes increased. The tensile behaviour of the both steels was characterized by strength increase however the absence of strain hardening was found at low carbon steel. The favourable effect of ferrite-pearlite structure modification due straining was reason for extended work hardening period observed at MC steel.

Severe plastic deformation (SPD) has received enormous interest over the last two decades as a method capable of producing fully dense and bulk ultra-fine grained (UFG) and nanocrystalline (NC) materials. Significant grain refinement obtained by SPD leads to improvement of mechanical, microstructural and physical properties. Compared to classical deformation processes, the big advantage of SPD manufacturing techniques, represented in particular by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) is the lack of shape-change deformation and the consequent possibility to impart extremely large strain. In ECAP processing, the workpiece is pressed through a die in which two channels of equal cross-section intersect at an angle of ϕ and an additional angle of ψ define the arc of curvature at the outer point of intersection of the two channels. As a result of pressing, the sample theoretically deforms by simple shear and retains the same cross-sectional area to allow repeated pressings for several cycles. A commercial AlMgSi alloy was investigated in our study. The specimens were processed at room temperature for multiple passes, using three different ECAP dies. All samples (ECAP processed and as-received) were subjected to metallographic analysis and mechanical testing. Several correlations between the main processing parameters and the resulting microstructural aspect and mechanical features for the processed material were established. It was shown that severe plastic deformation by means of ECAP processing can be used in aluminum alloys microstructural design as an advanced tool for grain refinement in order to attain the desired microstructure and mechanical properties.

To improve the loose structure and serious porosity of (Al–Zn–Mg–Cu) 7075 aluminum alloy laser-welded joints, aging treatment, double-sided ultrasonic impact treatment (DSUIT), and a combination of aging and DSUIT (A–DSUIT) were used to treat joints. In this experiment, the mechanism of A–DSUIT on the microstructure and properties of welded joints was analyzed. The microstructure of the welded joints was observed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The hardness and tensile properties of the welded components under the different processes were examined via Vickers hardness test and a universal tensile testing machine. The results showed that, after the aging treatment, the dendritic structure of the welded joints transformed into an equiaxed crystal structure. Moreover, the residual tensile stress generated in the welding process was weakened, and the hardness and tensile strength were significantly improved. After DSUIT, a plastic deformation layer of a certain thickness was generated from the surface downward, and the residual compressive stress was introduced to a certain depth of the joint. However, the weld zone unaffected by DSUIT still exhibited residual tensile stress. The inner microhardness of the joint surface improved; the impact surface hardness was the largest and gradually decreased inward to the weld zone base metal hardness, with a small improvement in the tensile strength. Compared with the single treatment process, the microstructural and mechanical properties of the welded joint after A–DSUIT were comprehensively improved. The microhardness and tensile strength of the welded joint reached 200 HV and 615 MPa, respectively, for an increase of 45.8% and 61.8%, respectively. Observation of the fractures of the tensile specimens under the different treatment processes showed that the fractures before the aging treatment were mainly ductile fractures while those after were mainly brittle fractures. After DSUIT of the welded joints, a clear and dense plastic deformation layer was observed in the fracture of the tensile specimens and effectively improved the tensile properties of the welded joints. Under the EBSD characterization, the larger the residual compressive stress near the ultrasonic impact surface, the smaller the grain diameter and misorientation angle, and the lower the texture strength. Finally, after A–DSUIT, the hardness and tensile properties improved the most.

AbstractTwo model aluminium-magnesium alloys, containing 3 and 7.5 wt.% of Mg, were subjected to plastic deformation by means of hydrostatic extrusion (HE). Two degrees of deformation were imposed by two subsequent reductions of the diameter. Microstructural analysis and tensile tests of the materials in the initial state and after deformation were performed. For both materials, HE extrusion resulted in the deformation of the microstructure—formation of the un-equilibrium grain boundaries and partition of the grains. What is more, HE resulted in a significant increase of tensile strength and decrease of the elongation, mostly after the first degree of deformation.

Structural changes in a 9%Cr martensitic steel after 1%, 4% creep and creep rupture test at 650°C and stress of 118 MPa were examined. Heat treatment provided the formation of tempered martensite lath structure (TMLS) in the steel. The precipitations of second phase particles along block and lath boundaries provide effective stabilization of the TMSL under annealing/aging condition. This structure hardly changed under creep conditions in grip portion of crept sample. Significant coarsening of both the second phase particles and the martensite laths takes place in neck portion. In addition, the latter ones lose their original morphology and are replaced by large strain-induced subgrains. It should be noted that the increase of subgrain size is in almost direct proportion to the particle growth during the creep to 4% strain. The rapid growth of martesite laths followed by their evolution to deformation subgrains takes place within the tertiary creep regime.

SUS316L austenitic stainless steel was subjected to severe plastic deformation (SPD) by the method of high pressure torsion (HPT). From a fully austenitic matrix (γ), HPT resulted in phase transformation from g®a¢. The largest volume fraction of 70% a¢ was obtained at 0.2 revolutions per minute (rpm) while was limited to 3% at 5rpm. Pre-straining of g by HPT at 5rpm decreases the volume fraction of a¢ obtained by HPT at 0.2rpm. By HPT at 5rpm, a¢®g reverse transformation was observed for a¢ produced by HPT at 0.2rpm.
