A Bi-TiO2 composite with high photocatalytic activity was prepared using tetrabutyl titanate and bismuth nitrate as raw material by hydrothermal method. The structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS), X-ray fluorescence(XRF) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrophotometer(UV-vis DRS). The results show that anatase nanometer titanium dioxide was prepared, in which Bi3+ take the place of Ti4+. The surface area of the sample was higher, ca.312.6m2•g-1. Bi doping caused red-shift of the absorption spectrum, and the composite has better Visible-light Response. Bi-TiO2 shows higher photocatalytic avtivity to the degradation of resorcinol than pure TiO2. The optimum value of Bi doped was 1.00 %. After 120 minutes illuminating under 70W Halide Lamps, degradation rate of resorcinol can get to 100%.

Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) enhanced MWCNT/TiO2nanocomposites were synthesized by surface coating of carbon nanotube with mixed phase of anatase and rutile TiO2through a modified sol-gel approach using tetrabutyl titanate as raw material. The morphological structures and physicochemical properties of the nanocomposites were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, DTA-TG, TEM, and UV-Vis spectra. The results show that TiO2nanoparticles with size of around 15 nm are closely attached on the sidewall of MWCNT. The nanocomposites possess good absorption properties not only in the ultraviolet but also in the visible light region. Under irradiation of ultraviolet lamp, the prepared composites have the highest photodegradation efficiency of 83% within 4 hours towards the degradation of Methyl Orange (MO) aqueous solution. The results indicate that the carbon nanotubes supported TiO2nanocomposites exhibit high photocatalytic activity and stability, showing great potentials in the treatment of wastewater.

A low temperature (130 °C) hydrothermal method was proposed for the synthesis of SnO2-SnS2 nanocomposite. The composition, structure and optical property of the as-synthesized SnO2-SnS2 nanocomposite were characterized by X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and its photocatalytic activity was tested by the reduction of Cr(VI) in water under visible light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation. It was found that the as-synthesized SnO2-SnS2 nanocomposite exhibited high photocatalytic activity in the reduction of Cr(VI) in water under visible light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation, whereas SnO2 nanoparticles displayed no photocatalytic activity in the reduction of Cr(VI) in water under visible light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation.

Titania powder was prepared by a sol-gel method and heat-treatment (HT). The morphology and structure of the titania powder were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activity of powder was investigated using methyl orange as target compound. Colour changing of powder was due to colour centers form. Under visible light, yellow powder showed the better photocatalytic activity than P25 powder and its visible light response was expanded. Preparation of yellow powder lowered conventional calcinations temperature obviously.

Few-layered MoS2 nanostructures were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method without the addition of any catalysts or surfactants. Their morphology, structure and photocatalytic activity were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectra and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, respectively. These results show that the MoS2 nanostructures synthesized at 180[Formula: see text]C exhibit an optimal visible light photocatalytic activity (99%) in the degradation of Rhodamine B owing to the relatively easier adsorption of pollutants, higher visible light absorption and lower electron–hole pair recombination.

Photocatalytic activity of monosized AuZnO composite nanoparticles with different compositions were synthesized by the one-pot polyol procedure, using the triblock copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-blockpoly(ethylene glycol) (PEO-PPO-PEO) as the surfactant. The structure and morphology of the composite nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The characterization showed that the AuZnO composite nanoparticles were spherical, with narrow particle size distribution and high crystallinity. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study confirms the PEO-PPO-PEO molecules on the surface of the composite nanoparticles. The investigations by ultraviolet-visible light absorbance spectrometer (UV-Vis) and photoluminescence spectrophotometer (PL) demonstrate well the dispersibility and excellent optical performance of the AuZnO composite nanoparticles. Photocatalytic activity and reusability of the AuZnO nanoparticles in UV and visible light regions was evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The experimental results show that the AuZnO composite nanoparticles with a suitable amount of Au loading have stability and improved photocatalytic activity. AuZnO composite nanoparticles are effective and stable for the degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous solution.

Among various methods of improving visible light activity of titanium(IV) oxide, the formation of defects and vacancies (both oxygen and titanium) in the crystal structure of TiO2 is an easy and relatively cheap alternative to improve the photocatalytic activity. In the presented work, visible light active defective TiO2 was obtained by the hydrothermal reaction in the presence of three different oxidizing agents: HIO3, H2O2, and HNO3. Further study on the effect of used oxidant and calcination temperature on the physicochemical and photocatalytic properties of defective TiO2 was performed. Obtained nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), specific surface area (BET) measurements, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DR-UV/Vis), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Degradation of phenol as a model pollutant was measured in the range of UV-Vis and Vis irradiation, demonstrating a significant increase of photocatalytic activity of defective TiO2 samples above 420 nm, comparing to non-defected TiO2. Correlation of EPR, UV-Vis, PL, and photodegradation results revealed that the optimum concentration of HIO3 to achieve high photocatalytic activity was in the range of 20–50 mol%. Above that dosage, titanium vacancies amount is too high, and the obtained materials’ photoactivity was significantly decreased. Studies on the photocatalytic mechanism using defective TiO2 have also shown that •O2− radical is mainly responsible for pollutant degradation.

β-Ga2O3nanorods are prepared by hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectra. The results reveal that high crystallinity, monoclinic phase ofβ-Ga2O3nanorods were prepared with a diameter of about 60 nm and length of 500 nm. Photoluminescence study indicates that theβ-Ga2O3nanorods exhibit a broad blue light emission at room temperature. Theβ-Ga2O3nanorods displayed high photocatalytic activity under simulated solar irradiation; after 2 h irradiation, over 95% of methylene blue solution and over 90% of methyl orange solution were decolorized. Since this process does not require additional hydrogen peroxide and uses solar light, it can be developed as an economically feasible and environmentally friendly method to treat dye effluent.

Sulfur-doped SnO2 nanoparticles with ultrafine sizes have been successfully prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method. The obtained samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), thermogravimetric (TG), analyzer UV-Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The experimental results indicate that the doping level of sulfur element as well as the bandgaps of SnO2 can be controlled to a certain extent by varying the amount of L-cysteine (L-cys). When evaluated as photocatalysts in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and reduction of Cr(VI) under visible light region, the resultant sulfur-doped SnO2 nanoparticles demonstrate obviously enhanced photocatalytic activities due to the markedly improved visible light response and effective separation of the photo-generated electron–hole pairs.

The electronic and optical properties of pure, C-doped, (C, F)-codoped, (C, N)-codoped, and (C, N, F)-codoped anatase TiO2 are investigated by using density functional theory (DFT). The results indicate that elemental doping creates a much more efficient and stable photocatalyst than pristine, which narrows the band gap of TiO2 and realizes its visible light response activity. With the incorporation of F into (C, N)-codoped TiO2, strong visible light absorption and photocatalytic activity are further increased. It also verifies the reliability of our calculations for good agreement with the experimental results in the optical absorption of (C, N)-codoped and (C, N, F)-codoped.
