Aiming at the glass-to-metal seals serving in the Solar Thermal Power (STP), glass-to-metal vacuum brazed joints were studied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were performed to examine the microstructure and element contents of interface seam on the glass-to-metal vacuum brazed joints. Also, the compositional concentration of the interface seam was measured by using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).

The present work reported the preparation of TiC/Fe-based composite by the synthesis reaction from Ti, C and Fe. The sintered composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. TiC, Fe3C and α-Fe were detected by X-ray diffraction analysis. The scanning and transmission electron micrographs revealed the morphology and distribution of the reinforcements, the microstructure of Fe matrix, the interfacial structure of TiC particle-to-Fe matrix. Moreover, the formation reason of the voids in composite was also discussed.

The aim of this study was to present and discuss the characteristics of three ceramic powders as well as the sintered material from the three commercial dental ceramics produced by Vita Zahnfabrik, Germany (VM13 and VMK Master, used for veneering metal frameworks, respectivelly VM9 used for veneering zirconia frameworks). An X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was performed, Raman spectra were recorded and the morphology of the samples was evidenced by using a high resolution scanning electron microscope, equipped with an EDXS detector. The results of this study corroborated with the presented literature data helps practitioners to better understand the interaction of these biomaterials with oral tissues, and, also helps researchers to modify the properties of ceramics for a better integration in the intraoral condition.

In this work, hydroxyapatite (HA) powder derived from pig bone was prepared by thermal processes. The effect of heat treatment temperatures on crystallinity and microstructure of the HA powder were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The powders are uniaxially compact and then sintering at 900°C-1050°C in air. The microstructural characterization of the porous was carried out by SEM. Filtration studies using the sintered porous HA ceramic were performed for sanitary wastewater. The analysis of raw water sample and filtered water were performed. The results showed that the water permeated through the porous HA ceramics could be cleaner water to meet of environmental standard.

The Mg3/Al and Mg3/Al0.99Eu0.01 layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were fabricated using a sol-gel chemistry approach and intercalated with different anions through ion exchange procedure. The influence of the origin of organic anion (oxalate, laurate, malonate, succinate, tartrate, benzoate, 1,3,5-benzentricarboxylate (BTC), 4-methylbenzoate (MB), 4-dimethylaminobenzoate (DMB) and 4-biphenylacetonate (BPhAc)) on the evolution of the chemical composition of the inorganic-organic LDHs system has been investigated. The obtained results indicated that the type and arrangement of organic guests between layers of the LDHs influence Eu3+ luminescence in the synthesized different hybrid inorganic–organic matrixes. For the characterization of synthesis products X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy (FLS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were used.

The effect of Nb content on microstructure, mechanical properties and phase formation in as-melt and annealed binary Ti-Nb alloys were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The content of Nb varied in the range 25-35 mass % leading to significant changes in the microstructure. The annealed and furnace-cooled binary Ti-Nb samples exhibited HCP martensitic α` phase at a Nb content below 27.5 mass % and metastable BCC β phase at higher contents of Nb. The mechanical properties of alloys depended strongly on the Nb content and type of the dominating phase.

An innovative spray deposition technique has been applied to produce in situ TiB2/Zn-30Al-1Cu composites. The microstructures of the spray-deposited composite were studied using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The results have shown that the TiB2particulates are formed in the microstructure. It was found that the TiB2particles were distributed in Zn-30Al-1Cu matrix uniformly, and the TiB2particles are about 2μm in size.

Million tons of ornamental stones residues are produced every year. Most of this residue is disposed without any kind of processing or treatment. Moreover, disposal occurs without a prospective of reuse or recycling. The incorporation into ceramics is a possible alternative for part of this residue. Clay-based ceramics have high capacity of incorporation of industrial residues. This work aimed to conduct a microstructural characterization of clay-based ceramics with incorporation of granite residues in the composition of the ceramic matrix. Specimens were produced with the addition of 0, 10, 20 and 30 wt. % of granite residues. The specimens were prepared by uniaxial pressing and sintered at temperatures of 1050 and 1200°C. For the microstructural analysis were carried out by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that the incorporated ceramics sintered at 1200oC presented higher densification and lower porosity as compared with those sintered at 1050oC.

In this paper, B-Ni-Al shield materials were fabricated by vacuum metal infiltration. The B-Ni-Al Composite were fabricated by preheating BN+Ni at 1550°C for one hour before infiltrating Al alloys into the preforms in a vacuum at 1100°C for two hours. Microstructural characterization of the materials obtained was performed using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Mechanical properties were evaluated by fracture toughness and bending strength. AlN was produced with interfacial reactions between Al and BN.

This study presents the results of investigation of the fine waste fraction from the Alytus Regional Landfill. The fine fraction was analysed with the aim of characterization of the chemical elements content using scanning electron microscopy, coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), SEM and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Quartz SiO2, calcite CaCO3, anhydrite CaSO4, albite NaAlSi3O8, dolomite CaMg(CO3)2, microcline KAlSi3O8, periclase MgO and muscovite KNa(Al, Mg, Fe)2(Si3.1, Al0.9)O10(OH)2 minerals were identified. The quantity of C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Fe, P, S, Cl and Ti chemical elements was determined and their percentage change after heating was calculated.
