Ceramics with formula (1-x-y)[Na0.515K0.485]0.94Li0.06(Nb0.99Ta0.01)O3 (NKLNT) xMnO2yCuO (when x, y = 0, 0.005 and 0.01) were prepared by a reaction sintering method. The effects of doping level on sinterability and properties of NKLNT ceramics were studied. The results indicated that the co-doping of MnO2 and CuO was effective in promoting the densification of ceramics. Grain growth during secondary recrystallization was also affected, leading to larger grain size with x, y = 0.01 sample. X-ray diffraction data showed that the orthorhombic tetragonal morphotropic phase boundary existed in all the samples. At room temperature, the dielectric properties of NKLNT ceramics were improved by doping of appropriate MnO2 and CuO content. The temperature dependence of dielectric constant showed a decrease slightly in Curie temperature (TC) with increasing MnO2 and CuO content. The composition with x = 0.005, y = 0 exhibited favorable properties for the promising lead-free piezoelectric candidate material.

In this work, lead-free Ba0.4Sr0.4Ca0.2Zr0.05Ti0.95O3 ceramics were prepared by the seed induced method using (0.5Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3–0.5BaZr0.05Ti0.95O3) (BST-BZT) seed. Seed crystals with concentrations of 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 mol% were mixed with BSCZT powder for 24 h and sintered at 1400 °C for 4 h. The phase formation and microstructure of BSCZT ceramic were characterized by X-ray diffraction technique (XRD) and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All samples showed a single phase perovskite structure without impurities and exhibited the existence of the tetragonal phase. The density values of the ceramics decreased from 4.90 to 4.75 g/cm3 with increasing seed crystal concentrations. The grain size of the sample without seed was 3.71 μm, whereas a grain size of 8.99 μm was observed for the sample with 10 mol% seed crystal. The dielectric constant at room temperature at 1 kHz was 1831 for the sample with 10 mol% seed crystal while the dielectric constant of the sample without seed was 1484. From the results in this work, BST-BZT seed can increase grain size and improve the dielectric constant at room temperature.

(1–[Formula: see text]Bi[Formula: see text]Na[Formula: see text]TiO3–[Formula: see text]BaTiO3 lead-free ceramics have been obtained from the conventional solid-state reaction sintering method. The structural properties were investigated from X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy techniques. Results revealed well-crystallized ceramic samples with perovskite structure. Microstructural properties, obtained from scanning electron microscopy measurements, have shown high density with very low porosity level. The dielectric response, analyzed as a function of the temperature and several frequencies, showed very broad peaks with a strong frequency dependence of the temperature for the maximum dielectric permittivity for the modified system. Results were analyzed considering the influence of the BaTiO3 content on the studied physical properties.

AbstractFe-O and Co-O films were prepared by DC magnetron sputtering in a mixture of Ar and O2 gases. By varying the oxygen to argon ratio, oxide films with stoichiometry FeO, Fe3O4, α-Fe2O3, CoO and Co3O4 were produced. TEM studies showed that the Fe – oxide films were polycrystalline consisting of small almost spherical grains, about 10 nm in size. Co-O films had different microstructure with grain size and shape dependent on the amount of oxygen. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the grains in Fe-O films were randomly oriented in contrast to Co-O films in which a <111> texture was observed. Pure FeO and α-Fe2O3 films were found to be superparamagnetic at room temperature but strongly ferromagnetic at low temperatures in contrast to the antiferromagnetic nature of bulk samples. A very large shift in the hysteresis loop, about 3800 Oe, was observed in field cooled Co-CoO films indicating the presence of a large unidirectional exchange anisotropy.

SrBi1.8Ce0.2Nb2O9 (SBCN) and SrBi1.8Ce0.2Ta2O9 (SBCT) powders were prepared via solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the SBCN and SBCT powders have the single phase orthorhom-bic Aurivillius structure at room temperature. The contribution of Raman scattering and FTIR spectroscopy of these samples were relatively smooth and resemble each other. The calcined powders were uniaxially pressed and sintered at 1250?C for 8 h to obtaine dense ceramics. Dielectric constant, loss tangent and AC conductivity of the sintered Ce-doped SrBi2Nb2O9 and SrBi2Ta2O9 ceramics were measured by LCR meter. The Ce-doped SBN (SBCN) ceramics have a higher Curie temperature (TC) and dielectric constant at TC (380?C and ?? ~3510) compared to the Ce-doped SBT (SBCT) ceramics (330?C and ?? ~115) when measured at 100Hz. However, the Ce-doped SBT (SBCT) ceramics have lower conductivity and dielectric loss.

( K 0.48 Na 0.52) NbO 3-x% Co 2 O 3 (x = 0, 0.03 and 0.05) (KNN-x% Co2O3 ) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state sintering method. An orthorhombic phase was observed for all KNN-x% Co2O3 ceramics at room temperature, and two phase transitions were confirmed by the high temperature X-ray diffraction and the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant. The Co2O3 greatly improves the density and decreases the sintering temperature of KNN ceramics. The KNN-0.05 mol%Co2O3 ceramic exhibits good properties (d33 = 120 pC/N , k p = 0.41, Q m = 213 and T c = 407°C) and a good age stability. The multiferroic behavior was also observed at room temperature for the KNN-0.05 mol%Co2O3 ceramic, as confirmed by P–E loops and magnetic behavior.

AEM examinations of a NiAlCo alloy of composition Ni-29 at.% Al-21 at.% Co after room temperature compression show that the microstructure consists of a twinned tetragonal matrix (L10, marked A in Figure 1a) and ordered fcc gamma prime precipitates (L12, marked B in Figure 1a) along grain boundaries. The compressive yield strengths of this alloy at room temperature and 760°C are 754 MPa and 163 MPa respectively. It also has superior room temperature ductility as compared to binary NiAl. An addition of 5 at.% Ti at the expense of Ni was made to this alloy in order to increase the yield strengths. The quarternary alloy shows compressive yield strengths of 976 MPa and 403 MPa at room temperature and 760°C, respectively, indicating that the Ti addition is having the desired effect.Comparison of the microstructures of the two alloys after room temperature compression (Figures la and lb) shows that the Ti containing alloy has a smaller grain size. X-ray diffraction data indicate that the gamma prime volume fraction increases from 10% to 20% as the result of the Ti addition. Titanium was also found to stabilize the B2 matrix (marked A in Figure lb) as no tetragonal L10 phase was found. All precipitates along grain boundaries were identified by micro-diffraction to be gamma prime.

Ln(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3 (Ln = Dy, La, Nd, Pr, Sm, Y) compositions have been prepared, and their pertinent properties for use as thin film substrates for YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) were measured. X-ray diffraction shows that Ln(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3 compositions have noncubic symmetry and the GdFeO3-type structure. Dielectric constant measurements revealed values between 22 and 27, which are larger than those of the LnAlO3 family. Quality factor (=1/ tan δ) of the ceramic specimens measured at room temperature was larger than 3000 at 10 GHz. Among the compounds, La(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3 exhibited the highest dielectric constant and the lowest dielectric loss. Chemical reaction was observed between Ln(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3 (Ln = Dy, Sm, Y) and YBCO after annealing a 1 : 1 mixture at 950 °C. Considering dielectric and physical properties, La(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3 and Sm(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3 were determined to be suitable substrates for YBCO thin film used in microwave applications.

A mixture of pure Mg and Si powders with an atomic ratio 2:1 has been subjected to mechanical alloying (MA) at room temperature to prepare the Mg2Si thermoelectric material. Mg2Si intermetallic compound with a grain size of 50 nm can be obtained by MA of Mg66.7Si33.3 powders for 60 hours and subsequently annealed at 620 °C. Consolidation of the MA powders was performed in a spark plasma sintering (SPS) machine using graphite dies up to 800–900 °C under 50 MPa. The shrinkage of consolidated samples during SPS was significant at about 250 °C and 620 °C. X-ray diffraction data shows that the SPS compact from 60 h MA powders consolidated up to 800 °C consists of only nanocrystalline Mg2Si compound with a grain size of 100 nm.

The properties of modified Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (BNT) based lead-free ceramics were investigated. The BNT-based ceramics were prepared by a solid-state mixed oxide method Phase formation was determined by X-ray diffraction technique (XRD). The X-ray diffraction analysis of the ceramics suggested that all samples exhibited a perovskite structure without second phase. The value of dielectric constant increased with increasing in sintering temperature. Moreover, high sintering temperatures could improve ferroelectric properties of BNT base lead-free ceramics.

Abstract In this study, the production of a technical porcelain, for the ceramic dielectric applications by using economical natural raw materials, was investigated. The basic porcelain composition was selected consisting of 30 wt% kaolin, 45 wt% potash-feldspar and 25 wt% quartz. The obtained phases in the sintered samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, and scanning electron microscopy images. It has been confirmed by these techniques that the main crystalline phases were quartz and mullite. Dielectric measurements of technical porcelains have been carried out at 1 kHz from room temperature to 200 °C. The dielectric constant, loss factor, dielectric loss tangent, and resistivity of the porcelain sample sintered at 1160 °C were 22-25, 0.32-1.80, 0.006-0.07, and 0.2-9 x 1013 Ω.cm, respectively. The value of dielectric constant was significantly high when compared to that of conventional porcelains which did not exceed generally 9.
