Effects of Tribo-Couple and Environmental Medium on the Tribological Properties of the Graphite/CaF2/TiC/Ni-Base Alloy Composite Coating

The graphite/CaF2/TiC/Ni-base alloy composite coating was prepared on the surface of 45 carbon steel by plasma spray. Effects of loads, friction counterparts and lubricants on the tribological properties of the composite coating were investigated. The results show that the wear rate of the GCTN composite coating against Si3N4is 0.67×10-3mm3/m, which is about 2 times that against GCr15 steel, because Si3N4induces micro-cutting wear of the composite coating. Water and NaCl solution may induce increasing of friction coefficients and wear rates. Especially, wear rate of the GCTN composite coating in NaCl solution is increased by 3.1 times compared with those under dry sliding and water. The GCTN composite coating presents better anti-wear property than Ni-base alloy coating in different environmental mediums.

In order to reduce friction coefficient of the Ni-base alloy coating and further improve its wear resistance, the graphite/TiC/Ni-base alloy composite coating was prepared on the surface of 45 carbon steel by plasma spray. Effects of loads, friction counterparts and lubricants on tribological properties of the coating were investigated. The results show that friction coefficient of the composite coating is reduced by 33% than that of the Ni-base alloy coating when worn against GCr15. Wear losses of the composite coating are less than those of the Ni-base alloy coating at all loads of 6N, 8N, 10N and 12N. Worn against Si3N4, friction coefficient of the composite coating is 13% less than that worn against GCr15, but its wear loss is 2.9 times of that worn against GCr15. Wear mechanism of the composite coating is micro cutting and brittle fraction when worn against Si3N4. Under lubrication of NaCl solution, friction coefficient of the composite coating is almost the same as that under dry sliding, wear loss is increased by 1.6 times. Stress corrosion and wedging effects of the NaCl solution are main wear mechanisms of the composite coating.

Ni-Co/SiC composite coatings embedded with different sizes of micron-Sic particles were prepared on the surfure of 45 carbon steel through electrochemical deposition. The effects of size of SiC particles on the microstructure, the hardness and tribological properties of the composite coatings were investigated. The results show that the decrease of the size may increase the hardness, make microstructure closer and greatly improve their wear resistance. The Ni-Co/SiC(W7) coating exhibit better integrated properties, its hardness was HV505, 20 percent higher than Ni-Co alloy coating, and its wear rate was only 1/5 of the Ni-Co/SiC(W40) coating. The wear mechanisms of the coatings are mainly plastic deformation with slight adhesive wear.

SrSO4 ceramic was prepared by hot-pressed sintering and its friction behavior was investigated against the Al2O3 ball under the dry sliding condition from room temperature to 800 °C. From room temperature to 400 °C, the tribological properties of SrSO4 ceramic are quite poor with the friction coefficients of 0.65–0.83 and the wear rates of about 10−3 mm3/Nm. With the testing temperature increasing to 600 °C and 800 °C, a brittle to ductile transition of SrSO4 takes place because of the activated slip systems. The friction coefficient and wear rate of SrSO4 ceramic also obviously decrease to 0.37 and about 10−4 mm3/Nm at 800 °C. The significant improvement of the tribological properties is ascribed to the formation of a smooth and continuous SrSO4 lubricating film with excellent ductility and low shear strength at elevated temperature. SrSO4 is considered to be a potential candidate for high-temperature solid lubricant with excellent lubricity.

Friction and wear performance of austenite stainless steels have been extensively studied and show a close relationship with the friction-induced martensitic transformation. However, how the grain size and associated friction-induced martensitic transformation behavior affect the tribological properties of austenite steels have not been systematically studied. In this work, dry sliding tests were performed on an AISI 304 stainless steel with a grain size ranging from 25 to 92 μm. The friction-induced surface morphology and microstructure evolution were characterized. Friction-induced martensitic transformation behavior, including martensite nucleation, martensite growth and martensite variant selection and its effect on the friction and wear behavior of the 304 stainless steel were analyzed. The results showed that both the surface coefficient of friction (COF) and the wear rate increase with the grain size. The COF was reduced three times and wear rate was reduced by 30% as the grain size decreased from 92 to 25 μm. A possible mechanism is proposed to account for the effect of grain size on the tribological behavior. It is discussed that austenite steel with refined grain size tends to suppress the amount of friction-induced martensitic transformed and significantly alleviates both the plowing and adhesive effect during dry sliding.

Advanced composites are the materials of the new generation. Hence, the focus of the study is to determine the tribological properties of the eutectic Al-Si alloy reinforced with (2, 4, 6, 8, and10 wt. %) of n-Al2O3 against chrome-plated steel ball under dry sliding conditions. The novelty of this work is the fabrication of the composite sample with this elemental composition, which is not done before. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) nonconventional fabrication method is used to fabricate advanced composite samples. Friction coefficient (COF) and wear rate of the composite samples were studied under high load, varying from 50 N to 300 N, using the ball-on-disc tribometer configuration, with other parameters such as stroke, frequency, sliding distance, and sliding velocity remaining constant at 2 mm, 30 Hz, 120 meter, and 0.120 m/s, respectively. Reduction in wear volume for the advanced composite was reported in the range 15.45–44.58% compared to the base alloy (eutectic Al-Si alloy). An increase in friction coefficient was reported in the range 28.80–35.65% compared to the base matrix alloy material. It was also reported that the wear rate increases and the friction coefficient of the composite sample decreases with an increase in load for the tribo-pair. It was observed that an increase in the wt. % of reinforcement influences the friction and wear behavior of the composite. Wear mechanism at high load was characterized by plastic deformation, adhesion, delamination, and abrasion wear. For pre- and postcharacterization of surface and worn tracks, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) electron dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), 3D surface profilometer, and optical microscopy were used. This work aimed to investigate the influence of load on the tribological properties of Al-Si eutectic reinforced n-Al2O3 under dry sliding conditions. Its main objective was to provide a new contribution to the tribological behavior of these composites fabricated using the nonconventional spark plasma sintering method.

Purpose This paper aims to enhance the corrosive wear and electrochemical corrosion of Ti–6Al–4V alloy. Design/methodology/approach A CoCrAlYTaSi alloy coating was fabricated on Ti–6Al–4V alloy using a laser thermal spraying (LTS). The surface and cross-section morphologies, chemical elements, phases and bonding strength of the obtained coating were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscope, X-ray diffraction and scratch test, respectively, The corrosive wear and electrochemical corrosion of CoCrAlYTaSi coating in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution were investigated using a wear tester and electrochemical workstation, respectively. Findings The average coefficient of frictions (COFs) of CoCrAlYTaSi coating under the wear loads of 2, 4 and 6 N are 1.31, 1.02 and 0.88, respectively; and the corresponding wear rates are 0.66 × 10−4, 1.10 × 10−4 and 1.30 × 10−4 mm3·N–1·m–1, respectively. The wear mechanism under the wear load of 2 N is abrasive wear, while those under the wear loads of 4 and 6 N are adhesive wear and abrasive wear. The charge transfer resistance of CoCrAlYTaSi coating is 5.368 × 105 Ω·cm2, higher than 2.193 × 105 of the substrate. Originality/value In this study, a CoCrAlYTaSi coating was firstly fabricated on Ti–6Al–4V alloy using a LTS. Its corrosive wear and electrochemical corrosion in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution were investigated, which played a protective role of corrosive wear on Ti–6Al–4V alloy.

The graphene containing Ni-based composite coatings with different graphene addition amounts were prepared on 45 steel surface by using dipulse composite electrodeposition technology. The tribological behavior of composite coating was tested by against GCr15 steel pin under the dry condition. The friction coefficient of composite coating is 20-30% lower than pure Cr coating, their wear rates are almost in the same magnitude. Compared with 45 steel, the friction coefficient of composite coating decreases and wear rate falls over 50%.
