Corrosion behaviors and mechanical properties of CrN film were evaluated. The CrN film was deposited on the surface of H13 steel by the magnetron sputtering method. The corrosion behaviors of the uncoated and CrN coated samples were studied in air-saturated 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution with various solution pHs, i.e., pH 2, 7 and 10 at 27°C by the electrochemical technique. The mechanical properties of the CrN coated samples were evaluated using nanohardness, ball on disk and scratch testers. The results revealed that the CrN coated samples had higher corrosion resistance than the uncoated samples at all pHs. Smooth substrate roughness enhanced corrosion resistance and also decreased the wear rate of the CrN coated samples on H13 steel. Corroded area was evaluated by synchrotron X-ray photoemission electron spectroscopy. It revealed that corrosion resistance of the CrN film was from oxidation of Cr into Cr2O3.

X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), immersion, electrochemical, and tensile tests were employed to analyze the phase constitution, microstructure, corrosion behaviors, and tensile properties of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy and a newly-developed low cost titanium alloy Ti-4Al-2V-1Mo-1Fe. The results showed that both the Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-4Al-2V-1Mo-1Fe alloys were composed of α and β phases. The volume fractions of β phase for these two alloys were 7.4% and 47.3%, respectively. The mass losses after 180-day immersion tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution of these alloys were negligible. The corrosion resistance of the Ti-4Al-2V-1Mo-1Fe alloy was higher than that of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The tensile tests showed that the Ti-4Al-2V-1Mo-1Fe alloy presented a slightly higher strength but a lower ductility compared to the Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

Super-hydrophobic film with hierarchical micro/nano structures was prepared by galvanic replacement reaction process on the surface of galvanized steel. The effects of the etching time and copper nitrate concentration on the wetting property of the as-prepared surfaces were studied. Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical technique were employed to characterize the surface morphology, chemical composition, and corrosion resistance. The stability and self-cleaning property of the as-fabricated super-hydrophobic film were also evaluated. The super-hydrophobic film can be obtained within 3 min and possesses a water contact angle of 164.3° ± 2°. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements indicated that the super-hydrophobic film greatly improved the corrosion resistance of the galvanized steel in 3.5 wt % NaCl aqueous solution. The highest inhibition efficiency was estimated to be 96.6%. The obtained super-hydrophobic film showed good stability and self-cleaning property.

This work researches the influence of the nickel content on the structural and anticorrosive properties of ZrSiTiN films deposited by means of reactive co-sputtering on alloys of Ti6Al4V. The morphology and structure were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the chemical composition was identified via X-ray scattering spectroscopy (EDS). The corrosion resistance was studied using potentiodynamic polarization (PP) tests employing a 3.5% by weight NaCl solution. In the films, an increase of Ni up to 6.97 at% was observed, while in XRD the FCC phase of (Zr, Ti) N was identified, with a mixed orientation in planes (111) and (200), which tended to diminish with the increase of Ni. Finally, with the addition of Ni, the corrosion current densities were reduced from 5.56 𝑥 10−8 to 2.64 𝑥 10−9 𝐴/𝑐m2. The improvement in the corrosion resistance is due to the effect of the Ni on the microstructure of the system (Zr, Ti) N, which can improve the quality of the passive film and prevent crystalline defects and corrosion zones.

Mg-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) and its composite (BMGC) can be excellent candidates as lightweight structure materials, but lack of anti-corrosion ability may restrict their application. In order to enhance the natural weak point of Mg-based BMGC, a 200-nm thick Zr-based metallic glass thin film (MGTF) ((Zr53Cu30Ni9Al8)99.5Si0.5) was applied and its mechanical properties as well as its corrosion resistance were appraised. The results of a 3-point bending test revealed that the flexural strength of the Mg-based BMGC with 200-nm thick Zr-based MGTF coating can be greatly enhanced from 180 to 254 MPa. We propose that the Zr-based MGTF coating can help to cover any small defects of a substrate surface, provide a protecting layer to prevent stress concentration, and cease crack initiation from the specimen surface during bending tests. Moreover, the results of anti-corrosion behavior analysis revealed a similar trend between the Mg-based BMG, Mg-based BMGC, and Mg-based BMGC with Zr-based MGTF coating in 0.9 wt.% sodium chloride solution. The readings show a positive effect with the Zr-based MGTF coating. Therefore, the 200-nm thick Zr-based MGTF coating is a promising solution to provide protection for both mechanical and anti-corrosion behaviors of Mg-based BMGC and reinforce its capability as structure material in island environments.

Fe–Al–O-based materials are currently undergoing a great deal of development because of their many special properties. However, lack of strength at high temperatures, limited ductility at ambient temperatures and corrosion resistance have hindered a wider application of these materials. Recently, a new Fe–Al-based oxide precipitation hardened (OPH) steel was developed by the authors to improve the mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. The new OPH alloys are produced by dissolving a specific amount of oxygen in the matrix during mechanical alloying followed by precipitation of fine dispersion of aluminum or yttrium oxides during hot consolidation. A series of tests was performed to evaluate the thermomechanical properties and corrosion resistance in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The results show improved corrosion resistance, as well as mechanical properties, while the production costs of this material are lower than for traditional materials.

The mechanical properties and corrosion behaviors of the casting Al-Cu alloys were investigated. The proportion of the two modifiers (PrxOy and LaxOy) has effects on the mechanical properties and the electrochemical corrosion behavior of the casting Al-Cu alloy. The ultimate true tensile strength of the Al-Cu alloy modified only by LaxOy is the highest (616.0 MPa). The fracture strain of the Al-Cu alloy modified by PrxOy and LaxOy is the highest (12.3%). The Al-Cu alloy modified by PrxOy has better corrosion resistance than any other Al-Cu alloy. The prominent mechanical properties should be attributed to the finer crystal grains and more homogeneously distributed nano-scale phase precipitates. The existence of continuous and compact protective Al2O3 and RE-O films enhanced the corrosion resistance of the modified Al-Cu alloy during the corrosion process.

To improve the corrosion property of magnesium alloys, Zr-based amorphous composite coatings have been fabricated on AZ91D magnesium alloy by laser cladding using mixed powders Zr55Al10Ni5Cu30/SiC. The microstructure of the coating was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The corrosion resistance of the coatings was tested in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution. The results show that the coatings mainly consist of amorphous and different crystalline phases. The coatings compared with AZ91D magnesium alloy exhibit good corrosion resistance because of the presence of the amorphous phase in the coatings.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the combined erosion and corrosion behavior of WC-Ni vacuum brazed coating. Design/methodology/approach Al2O3 particles and 10 wt% NaCl solution are used to evaluate erosion and corrosion resistance of WC-Ni vacuum brazed coating. Combined test of erosion and corrosion is also conducted. The microstructure of each specimen is characterized by the scanning electron microscopy. The chemical composition was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Findings WC-Ni vacuum brazed coating layer is effective protective coating under combined erosion and corrosion environment. The weight loss of coating layer is more reduced as the cumulative test time. Originality/value WC-Ni vacuum brazed coatings are investigated to check characteristic of the combined erosion and corrosion environment. WC-Ni vacuum brazed coatings are kind of diffusion coating that attract attention because of the resistance of superb impact and corrosion in comparison with other coatings. Some previous researches reported the properties of vacuum brazed WC material. Erosion and corrosion behaviors of WC-Ni vacuum brazed coatings were studied in our previous research, respectively. Hence, in this research, the principal objective is to examine the combined erosion and corrosion behavior of WC-Ni vacuum brazed coating.

Galvannealed steels are produced by reheating of Zinc-coated steels, in which the iron and the zinc are interdiffused to form Zn-Fe intermatallic compound. In recent years, application of galvannealed steel has increased due to its excellent corrosion resistance, good weldability and paintability. Galvannealed production requires strict control of processing conditions to obtain an optimal alloying degree in the coatings. The analysis of the alloying degree is very important since they are closely related to the corrosion and mechanical properties. This study is measurement of alloying degree of the galvannealed steel by using the XRD. Partial least squares (PLS) model is a powerful multivariate tool that has been successfully applied to the quantitative analysis of data in XRD. The alloying degree was determined by using PLS regression to a concentration accuracy of 0.2%. The XRD analysis and proposed PLS model can be successfully used to determine the alloying degree of industrially produced galvannealed steel.

The corrosion behaviour of Zn-10Al-1.5Cu alloy in NaCl solution was examined. The used NaCl solution concentrations were 1M, 0.3M, and 0.003M for a constant temperature values of 7°C or 25°C or 45°C. The corrosion behaviour of this alloy was investigated under potentiodynamic corrosion conditions. The surface of the corroded alloy specimens was studied with the aid of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. It was observed that the increase of NaCl concentration in the corrosion solution for a constant value of temperature led to lower corrosion resistance of the alloy. For a constant value of solution concentration, the increase of solution temperature also led to the decrease of corrosion resistance of the same alloy.
