This work researches the influence of the nickel content on the structural and anticorrosive properties of ZrSiTiN films deposited by means of reactive co-sputtering on alloys of Ti6Al4V. The morphology and structure were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the chemical composition was identified via X-ray scattering spectroscopy (EDS). The corrosion resistance was studied using potentiodynamic polarization (PP) tests employing a 3.5% by weight NaCl solution. In the films, an increase of Ni up to 6.97 at% was observed, while in XRD the FCC phase of (Zr, Ti) N was identified, with a mixed orientation in planes (111) and (200), which tended to diminish with the increase of Ni. Finally, with the addition of Ni, the corrosion current densities were reduced from 5.56 𝑥 10−8 to 2.64 𝑥 10−9 𝐴/𝑐m2. The improvement in the corrosion resistance is due to the effect of the Ni on the microstructure of the system (Zr, Ti) N, which can improve the quality of the passive film and prevent crystalline defects and corrosion zones.

To improve the corrosion property of magnesium alloys, Zr-based amorphous composite coatings have been fabricated on AZ91D magnesium alloy by laser cladding using mixed powders Zr55Al10Ni5Cu30/SiC. The microstructure of the coating was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The corrosion resistance of the coatings was tested in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution. The results show that the coatings mainly consist of amorphous and different crystalline phases. The coatings compared with AZ91D magnesium alloy exhibit good corrosion resistance because of the presence of the amorphous phase in the coatings.

In this research, efforts were made to study the modification of microstructure of pure Ni matrices. Modification was attempted using glucose as carburizing medium under a control of heat treatment conditions. Nickel plates were carburized under vacuum conditions at 380°C and 650°C for 3 hours. In order to determine the parameters of the carburizing, thermal properties of glucose along with the thermochemical behavior were examined by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA). The characterization of the microstructure of the carburized specimens was investigated by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). For analyzing the effect of temperature treatment on corrosion resistance, electrochemical corrosion tests were conducted. It was observed that the polarization curves for carburized samples at 380°C were shifted to lower corrosion current densities. Consequently, lower corrosion rates were achieved for these samples preventing the formation of extensive corrosion over their surfaces comparing with carburized Nickel substrates at 650°C.

The corrosion behavior of Zr53.5Cu26.5Ni5Al12Ag3 bulk amorphous alloy in 3.5% NaCl solution was investigated by using potentiodynamic polarization experiments and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that Zr53.5Cu26.5Ni5Al12Ag3 bulk amorphous alloy has the better corrosion resistance than its corresponding crystal alloy. During the bath in the 3.5% NaCl solution at 25°C, Zr53.5Cu26.5Ni5Al12Ag3 alloy has the lower corrosion current density than the corresponding crystal alloy. After 100h, the corrosion current densities of Zr53.5Cu26.5Ni5Al12Ag3 and the corresponding crystal alloy are 3.8415×10-8A/cm2 and 5.2827×10-7A/cm2, respectively. The results of EIS test indicate that Zr53.5Cu26.5Ni5Al12Ag3 bulk amorphous alloy has the excellent corrosion resistance because passive film with stable structure formed on the surface in 3.5% NaCl solution. With an increase in the immersion time, the passive film becomes thicker. It leads to impedance resistance and corrosion resistance decrease. The surface of Zr53.5Cu26.5Ni5Al12Ag3 bulk amorphous alloy in 3.5% NaCl solution for 100h was analyzed by SEM and EDS. The results show that the corrosive pitting can be found at both the amorphous alloy and the corresponding crystal alloy. However, the amorphous alloy has the better corrosive pitting resistance than the crystal one because the corrosion products formed by selective dissolving of Zr and Al elements. Moreover, the addition of Ag element helps to improve the corrosion resistance of the amorphous alloy greatly.

The corrosion behaviour of Zn-10Al-1.5Cu alloy in NaCl solution was examined. The used NaCl solution concentrations were 1M, 0.3M, and 0.003M for a constant temperature values of 7°C or 25°C or 45°C. The corrosion behaviour of this alloy was investigated under potentiodynamic corrosion conditions. The surface of the corroded alloy specimens was studied with the aid of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. It was observed that the increase of NaCl concentration in the corrosion solution for a constant value of temperature led to lower corrosion resistance of the alloy. For a constant value of solution concentration, the increase of solution temperature also led to the decrease of corrosion resistance of the same alloy.

Modified zaccagnaite layered double hydroxide (LDH) type films were synthesized on steel substrates by pulsed electrochemical deposition from aqueous solutions. The resulting films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/X-ray dispersive spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Structural characterization indicated a pure layered double hydroxide phase; however, elemental analysis revealed that the surface of the films contained Zn:Al ratios outside the typical ranges of layered double hydroxides. Layer thickness for the deposited films ranged from approximately 0.4 to 3.0 μm. The corrosion resistance of the film was determined using potentiodynamic polarization experiments in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The corrosion current density for the coatings was reduced by 82% and the corrosion potential was shifted 126 mV more positive when 5 layers of modified LDH coatings were deposited onto the steel substrates. A mechanism was proposed for the corroding reactions at the coating.

The objective of this study was to improve the surface properties, hardness, wear resistance and electrochemical corrosion resistance of #45 steel. To this end, Ni–P–ZrO2–CeO2 composite coatings were prepared on the surface of #45 steel using the jet-electrodeposition technique by varying the current density from 20 to 60 A/dm2. The effect of current density on the performance of the composite coatings was evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were applied to explore the surface topography, elemental composition, hardness and electrochemical corrosion resistance of the composite coatings. The results showed that with the increase in the current density, the hardness, wear resistance, and electrochemical corrosion resistance tends to increase first and then decrease. At a current density of 40 A/dm2, the hardness reached a maximum of 688.9 HV0.1, the corrosion current reached a minimum of 8.2501 × 10−5 A·cm−2, and the corrosion potential reached a maximum of −0.45957 V. At these values, the performance of the composite coatings was optimal.

The electroplated Ni-Co-Cr coatings were prepared on surface of a low carbon steel. The microstructure of the deposits were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), the corrosion resistance of the deposits was evaluated using neutral salt-spray test and polarization measurement. The results show that the deposits are a Co and Cr solid solution in Ni with a grain size of 6.9~10.6nm, were nearly free of corrosion after neutral salt-spray tested 100 hours. With chromium content increasing, the coatings exhibited higher corrosion potential and lower corrosion current, which revealed excellent corrosion resistance.

In this paper, pulsed arc ion plating was applied for preparing Ti–Al–N coatings. The effects of different process parameters on the structure and corrosion resistance properties of Ti–Al–N coating were studied by changing the temperature. The microstructures, morphology features and the corrosion resistance of the different temperatures of Ti–Al–N coating were investigated to simulate the corrosion conditions of seawater. All the samples (prepared at [Formula: see text]C, [Formula: see text]C, [Formula: see text]C and [Formula: see text] were measured in 3.5[Formula: see text]wt.% NaCl solution at [Formula: see text]C and characterized by potentiodynamic polarization curves, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion resistance of carbon steel was improved by the coating modification. The results showed that the sample prepared at [Formula: see text]C possesses excellent corrosion resistance where corrosion current density can only reach to 11.176[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]A/cm2, Meanwhile, SEM images also revealed that the microstructure of the sample is much smoother and nearly no defects can be observed.

In this paper, Pd ions doped cerium conversion coating (CeCC/Pd) was deposited on AA2219-T87 aluminum alloy by electroplating. The microstructure and composition of the coating were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Corrosion behavior of AA2219-T87 aluminum alloy with the coating was investigated in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution at the room temperature. XRD and XPS results indicate the existence of cerium-oxide and palladium-oxide in the CeCC/Pd. Polarization curves show that the CeCC/Pd exhibits excellent corrosion resistance. The corrosion current density of the CeCC/Pd decreases by two orders of magnitude compared with the CeCC. The improvement of corrosion resistance would be attributed to the small grain size, good compactness and adhesive strength of the composite coatings.
