The mechanical properties and corrosion behaviors of the casting Al-Cu alloys were investigated. The proportion of the two modifiers (PrxOy and LaxOy) has effects on the mechanical properties and the electrochemical corrosion behavior of the casting Al-Cu alloy. The ultimate true tensile strength of the Al-Cu alloy modified only by LaxOy is the highest (616.0 MPa). The fracture strain of the Al-Cu alloy modified by PrxOy and LaxOy is the highest (12.3%). The Al-Cu alloy modified by PrxOy has better corrosion resistance than any other Al-Cu alloy. The prominent mechanical properties should be attributed to the finer crystal grains and more homogeneously distributed nano-scale phase precipitates. The existence of continuous and compact protective Al2O3 and RE-O films enhanced the corrosion resistance of the modified Al-Cu alloy during the corrosion process.

Mg-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) and its composite (BMGC) can be excellent candidates as lightweight structure materials, but lack of anti-corrosion ability may restrict their application. In order to enhance the natural weak point of Mg-based BMGC, a 200-nm thick Zr-based metallic glass thin film (MGTF) ((Zr53Cu30Ni9Al8)99.5Si0.5) was applied and its mechanical properties as well as its corrosion resistance were appraised. The results of a 3-point bending test revealed that the flexural strength of the Mg-based BMGC with 200-nm thick Zr-based MGTF coating can be greatly enhanced from 180 to 254 MPa. We propose that the Zr-based MGTF coating can help to cover any small defects of a substrate surface, provide a protecting layer to prevent stress concentration, and cease crack initiation from the specimen surface during bending tests. Moreover, the results of anti-corrosion behavior analysis revealed a similar trend between the Mg-based BMG, Mg-based BMGC, and Mg-based BMGC with Zr-based MGTF coating in 0.9 wt.% sodium chloride solution. The readings show a positive effect with the Zr-based MGTF coating. Therefore, the 200-nm thick Zr-based MGTF coating is a promising solution to provide protection for both mechanical and anti-corrosion behaviors of Mg-based BMGC and reinforce its capability as structure material in island environments.

Influence of heat treatment on the corrosion resistance of the aluminum-copper (Al-Cu) coating on the aluminum substrate was investigated. The coating was produced by the electrical discharge alloying (EDA) method. The surface and microstructure of the specimens were observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The phase analysis of the composite materials by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) indicated that intermetallic compounds (i.e., CuAl2 and Cu9Al4) were formed through reactions between Al and Cu. during the EDA process. A significant increase in the hardness of the Al-Cu coating was affected by the improvement of the alloy structure. The heat treatment of materials was carried out at 400 °C or 600 °C in the air atmosphere. A corrosion test of materials was carried out by using electrochemical methods. The corrosive environment was acidic chloride solution. After heat treatment at 400 °C the mechanical properties of the Al/Cu alloy increased significantly and the oxide layer protect of the alloy surface against corrosion. However, after heat treatment at elevated temperature, i.e., 600 °C it was found that the (Al2O3)ads and (CuO)ads coatings were destroyed. The mechanical properties of the Al/Cu alloy decreased, and its surface has undergone deep electrochemical corrosion.

The effect of Ca addition on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion behaviors of the extruded Mg–7Li–3Al alloys was investigated. The results showed that the extruded Mg–7Li–3Al–xCa alloys consisted of α-Mg (hcp) + β-Li (bcc) matrix phases and Al2Ca. With increasing Ca content, the amount and morphology of the Al2Ca phase changed significantly. The grains of the extruded Mg–7Li–3Al–xCa alloys were refined by dynamic recrystallization during the extrusion process. The tensile tests results indicated that the extruded Mg–7Li–3Al–0.4Ca alloy exhibited favorable comprehensive mechanical properties; its ultimate tensile strength was 286 MPa, the yield strength was 249 MPa, and the elongation was 18.7%. The corrosion results showed that this alloy with 0.4 wt.% Ca addition exhibited superior corrosion resistance, with a corrosion potential Ecorr of −1.48742 VVSE, attributed to the formation of protective Al2Ca phases.

Rare earth magnesium alloys and Mg-Zn-Cu alloys were prepared by gravity casting and direct squeezing casting respectively, and the corrosion performances of three kinds of Mg-Zn-Cu alloys were compared in this paper. The results indicate that adding rare earth elements and direct squeezing casting process can significantly increase the mechanical properties of magnesium alloys, and aluminum can improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the electrochemical corrosion performance of high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) sprayed WC–12Co coating in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution, which provided a guiding significance on the corrosion resistance of H13 hot work mould steel. Design/methodology/approach A WC–12Co coating was fabricated on H13 hot work mould steel using a HVOF, and the electrochemical corrosion behaviors of WC–12Co coating and substrate in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution was measured using open circuit potential (OCP), potentiodynamic polarization curve (PPC) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. Findings The OCP and PPC of WC–12Co coating positively shift than those of substrate, its corrosion tendency and corrosion rate decrease to enhance its corrosion resistance. The curvature radius of capacitance curve on the WC–12Co coating is larger than that on the substrate, and the impedance and polarization resistance of WC–12Co coating increase faster than those of substrate, which reduces the corrosion process. Originality/value The electrochemical corrosion behaviors of WC–12Co coating and substrate in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution is first measured using OCP, PPC and EIS tests, which improve the electrochemical corrosion resistance of H13 hot work mould steel.

Mg-1Zn-0.5Ca alloy was prepared by casting technology. The as-cast alloy was solution treated at 470°C for 24 h and aged at 175°C for 0-50 h. The microstructure, mechanical properties and electrochemical corrosion behavior of the alloys were investigated. The results showed that the average grain size of the as-cast alloy was 120-150 μm, and the precipitated phases were distributed uniformly in α-Mg grain. The as-cast alloy showed good mechanical properties. The tensile strength was 186 MPa, and ductility was 23%. A typical age softening responses was obtained during the aging treatment. In the electrochemical corrosion tests, corrosion of the alloys is improved in Hank’s solution and 3.5wt% NaCl solution after the solution and aged treatment. However, the aged treated alloys showed the better electrochemical corrosion resistance.

Ti-6Al-4V alloys are typically used for biomedical implants, aerospace components and offshore equipment, where corrosion resistance is critical. In the present paper, the electrochemical corrosion behaviors of Ti-6Al-4V alloys made by different traditional processing and 3D printing technologies in seawater, 3.5 wt.% NaCl, 3.5 wt.% HCl, 5 wt.% HCl and 10 wt.% HCl solutions were studied through polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) analyses. The influences of microstructure and printing parameters on the corrosion behaviors of Ti-6Al-4V alloys were analyzed. In addition, the corrosion current density, film resistance and charge transfer resistance of traditionally processed Ti-6Al-4V and 3D printed Ti-6Al-4V in the five solutions were compared. The results show that Ti-6Al-4V possesses a better corrosion resistance in seawater than in 3.5 wt.% NaCl, and that the corrosion rate increases with the HCl concentration. Besides, 3D printed Ti-6Al-4V shows a higher corrosion rate in comparison with traditionally processed Ti-6Al-4V because pores are effortless to enrich Cl-. Finally, the ratio of laser power to its scanning speed and the phase constituent composition of the alloy have slight influences on its electrochemical corrosion behavior. It is suggested that for the 3D printed alloy, the deterioration of mechanical properties induced by corrosion damage during servicing should be assessed and considered.
