Abstract Flexible or asphalt concrete pavement is the paving system most widely adopted all over the world. It has been recognized that there are many different types of the factors affecting the performance and durability of asphalt concrete pavement, including the service conditions, such as: the variation of temperature from mild to extremes and the repeated excessive axle loading as well as the inadequate quality of the raw materials. All of these when combined together are going to accelerate the occurrence of distresses in flexible pavement such as permanent deformation and fatigue cracking. As the result, there has an urgent need to enhance the ability of asphalt concrete mixture to resist distresses happened in pavement. Use of additives is one of the techniques adopted to improve pavement properties. It has been found that hydrated lime might be one of the effective additives because it is widely available and relatively cheap compared to other modifiers like polymers. This paper presents an experimental study of the hydrated-lime modified asphalt concrete mixtures. Five different percentages of the hydrated lime additive were investigated, namely (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3 percent). The hydrated lime additive was used as partial replacement of limestone filler by total weight of the aggregate. The designed Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) concretes are for the application of three pavement courses, i.e. Surface, Leveling and Base. These mixtures are designed and tested following Marshall procedure and uniaxial repeated loading to evaluate permanent deformation at different temperatures of 20°C, 40°C and 60°C. The experimental results show that the addition of hydrated lime as a partial replacement of ordinary limestone mineral filler results a significant improvement on mechanical properties and the resistant to permanent deformation of the designed asphalt concrete mixtures.

The article reviews the issue of the stress-strain state of the road surface in the winter period as a result of roadbed soil heaving. The main purpose of the work is to determine the stress fields in the asphalt-concrete pavement, which is necessary for designing of frost-resistant roadbeds in the areas with seasonal freezing of roadbed soils. The following research methods were used: theoretical, laboratory, field. With consideration of different properties of materials and geometric dimensions of the road surface section, stress fields in the asphalt-concrete pavement during freezing were obtained with the use of the software product. Comparison of theoretical studies with the results of experimental and full-scale tests showed that the forms of theoretical solutions describe the stress fields in the freezing asphalt-concrete pavement quite accurately.

During the construction of bridges, special attention is paid to geometric parameters, one of the most important parameters of the rideable bed is the evenness of the bases and coatings. Geodetic works provide an integrated approach to solving the problem of controlling the flatness of the base layers, which includes: geodetic survey of the rideable canvas, verification of working documentation, control of the copying string, geometric control of the evenness of the laid asphalt concrete floor slab for the steel concrete span and bridge deck for a metal span structure. Various options for controlling the height position of a copier string and a laid asphalt concrete pavement (using trigonometric and geometric leveling) were reviewed and tested. A priori assessment of the accuracy of the measurement results for each of the methods for monitoring algebraic difference of elevations (amplitudes) was previously performed. The article proposes a combined approach to geodetic control at all stages of work on checking the evenness of the asphalt concrete pavement.

Drucker-Prager linear elastic-perfectly plastic model and the associated flow rule, a numerical simulation study has been conducted on the layered asphalt concrete pavement structure, using the 2D axisymmetric finite element method (FEM). Pursuant to empirical equation of the stability, cohesion and internal friction angle of asphalt concrete, and in line with experimental test subjects on pavement material and pavement performance, the impact of mechanical parameters of each layer of asphalt concrete on the road surface deflection and the evolution law of plasticity in each structural layer under standard axle load has been studied.

The article uses a practical example to consider changes in the transport and operational state of the public highway and road surface, with the possibility of justifying and taking into account these changes in the design, operation and repair. The methodological approach of the road and road surface survey provides for the first stage of visual inspection of the road and identification of areas with visible defects of the existing roadbed and road surface. At the second stage, the asphalt roadbed was opened by pits in the most visible areas of damage in order to take samples of road clothing and subsequent analysis. Defects and causes of deformations of asphalt concrete pavement and existing roadbed were identified. Recommendations for eliminating the causes of deformations and strengthening the coating are given.

Asphalt concrete of various brands is mainly used as a road surface. The quality and durability of the coating depends on its density. To achieve the required density of the asphalt concrete pavement, road rollers are used. The working body of the roller is a metal drum or a set of pneumatic tires. The article discusses the process of the asphalt concrete mixture compaction with a smooth metal drum. A rheological model of the force interaction of a smooth drum with a material is adopted, which includes elastic, viscous and plastic elements. The adopted model was corrected taking into account the investigated process of elastic aftereffect that occurs in the asphalt concrete mixture during compaction. The law of behavior of asphalt-concrete mixture with elastic aftereffect is established. A simulation model has been developed to study the behavior of a material in the process of elastic aftereffect. In the course of dynamic modeling, the relationship between the physical and mechanical characteristics of the compacted material with the design and technological parameters of the road roller was established. A statistical analysis of the design parameters of existing models of road rollers has been carried out. The results of the analysis, as well as the obtained dependencies, can be used to designate the technological modes of operation of a set of road rollers when compacting the asphalt concrete pavement of a motor road. Taking into account the elastic aftereffect when assigning the operating modes of the compaction equipment will improve the compaction efficiency, as well as the quality of the resulting coating.

A new classification of asphalt concerete pavement defects is presented in the article and the causes of their development are systematised. The dynamics of asphalt concrete pavement defect development in the road and the dependence of pavement deterioration on the type of defects are presented in the theoretical graphic model. The change of road pavement structural strength (stiffness modulus) depending on the pavement service life is also described. The dependence of the level of asphalt concrete pavement on the most important roads of the Republic of Lithuania (road Vilnius-Kaunas [Al] and motorway Vilnius Panevėžys [A2]) measured with one-wheel dynamometric trailer PKRS-2U (Russia) on the level of pavement deterioration has been identified through experiments. The analysis of the dependence of transport costs and driving speed on road pavement level has been carried out. Regression equations of such dependence and correlation coefficients as well as relations are presented too.

Due to the heavy traffic and channelization, vehicle often brake and park for a long time at the urban road signal intersection, especially at heavy traffic intersection, for which it is easy to present permanent deformation on asphalt pavement. It can significantly improve the technical characteristics of the road intersection with adding Dolanit fiber into asphalt concrete. Based on BISAR3.0 software of applying layered elastic system theory and combined with the surface layer analysis on indoor mechanical property test to Dolanit fiber rein-forced asphalt concrete pavement, the results show that the allowable tensile stress is 0.61MPa. Even if at the condition of overload 50% and emergency braking, there is no shear failure on the Dolanit fiber rein-forced asphalt concrete pavement.
