Logistics of Goods Transited through the Romanian Inland Harbors

This work presents some relevant data regarding the amount of goods that have been transported inside the European Union borders using the inland waterway transport. There are also presented the goods quantities that were transited the Romanian harbours in the last years. In accordance with the Eurostat inland waterways freight transport report for the 2016-2019 period, the Romanian market was estimated in 2019 at the approximate value of over 33.200 thousand tones, which situated Romania on the 5th position among the European states. More, this quantity represented a total increase of 11.9% reported to the previous year. The biggest quantities of transited goods are represented by cereals, then crude mineral products and then oil and gas products.

The project MoVe IT! (www.moveit-fp7.eu), funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union, was focussed on modernisation of inland waterway vessels by retrofitting. In order to stimulate an implementation of the results by the industry, visualization of the positive impacts was realised by a set of vivid demonstrators. In this paper, the demonstrations by simulators for a single screw motor cargo vessel of the type Johann Welker are described.The motion simulations are carried out by a custom made (for inland vessels developed) computer program, which use common naval architect force calculation algorithms and a new approximation theory for added masses.The simulator demonstrations comprise descriptions and visualisations of ship lengthening, application of different rudder and a new propulsion device. Five different cases are examined, the original vessel and four retrofit options.First retrofit variant is the lengthened vessel with original rudder and propeller. Other two analysis are performed changing only the rudder system. In fourth simulator demonstration the original propeller is changed to a pump propeller (a novel propulsion device).The environment are in the simulator demonstrations: constant draught of the vessel, and calm, infinite deep waterway.As results of simulator demonstrations the effects on fuel consumption and manoeuvrability are discussed in the paper.

Abstract Purpose. Recently, foreign economic activity in Ukraine has gradually shifted towards the European Union (EU). The EU’s special interest in the potential of Ukraine’s transit transport lies in the geographical position of the country, which is located on the main routes of international freight traffic. The article aims to study the status and development opportunities in the field of transit freight transport of the Ukrainian railway joint-stock company (JSC Ukrzaliznytsya) within the framework of European integration. Methodology. The article presents the analysis of the activity of the JSC Ukrzaliznytsya in the field of transit freight transport for the period of 2005-2017 and outlines the strategic prospects for its development as a significant transit route considering the conditions of European integration. The methodology included theoretical and practical research using statistical methods; methods of comparative analysis; ABC analysis method; and taxonomic method. Results. The JSC Ukrzaliznytsya was analysed to determine the status of its activity in the field of transit freight transportation for 2005-2017. A structural-dynamic analysis was made to estimate cargo volumes transported by railway enterprises and related revenues. 18 types of cargo were identified using the ABC analysis method based on two indicators, namely, “volumes of transportation” and “revenues from cargo transit”. Also, taxonomic indicators of the level of system development were considered and revenues from cargo transit for the analysed period were estimated. Finally, recommendations were proposed regarding the development of a joint-stock company as a strategic cargo transporter under the conditions of European integration with Ukraine. Practical implications (if applicable). The results of the conducted research and performed calculations confirmed the need to refocus the management activity of the JSC Ukrzaliznytsya in the field of cargo transit towards strategically important cargoes, which have the largest share in the structure of financial results. This will enable the company to achieve its leading role as a strategic transit carrier of the European Union in the near future.

Progressive changes, dynamic business environment become a constant of life in several economics spheres, including the Lithuanian freight transport service sector. Lithuanian freight transport services are characterized as sector acting on the terms of high rivalry. The aim of this article is to analyse the competitiveness of the Lithuanian freight transport sector in the context of the European Union. The competitive theoretical background, estimation of competitiveness of freight transport services are analysed. The competitive analysis of the sector through the Porter’s model of five forces and internal characteristics of the enterprise defining the Lithuanian freight transport sector in terms of size and specialization is carried out. The methods of the research are systematics and a comparative analysis of scientific literature, quantitative research based on freight transport organisation survey. An empirical survey in which 349 freight transport service enterprises were examined allowed to reveal and estimate the most important factors influencing the competition intensity and the main firm-level factors that influence the companies’ competitiveness in the economic sector.

Preparing to become a member of the European Union Lithuania will have to keep the requirements of the EU Regulation 3821/85 EEC in road transport. It concerns the installation of recording equipment in the vehicles of international transportation and local passenger and freight transport. According to the EU Regulation recording equipment (tachographs) must not be installed in every vehicle and it will be done step by step. About 38 thousand of vehicles will have operating tachographs and for four years it will require about 8 million Lt of investments per year, but the conditions of work and rest of drivers will be improved and the number of accidents will be decreased.

The Russian natural gas industry is the world's largest producer and transporter of natural gas. This paper identifies the benefits for Serbia as transient country to European Union for Russian natural gas through South Stream gas-line in the current political context of implementation of gas agreement. On the other hand, according to the Agreement on Stabilization and Integration to European Union, Serbia is obligatory to implement reforms in energy sector and its energy policy must be in accordance with the European Union policy. Republic of Serbia has produced and consumed natural gas domestically since 1952, but has always been net importer. Strategy of Energy Development in Serbia and especially, National Action Plan for the gasification on the territory of Republic of Serbia dedicated special attention to gas economy development in respect with expected contribution in efficient energy use and environmental policy protection in the country.

There are several innovations to be found in the inland waterway sector. European Federation of Inland Ports EFIP defines trends in Inland Ports and Current EU Policy Developments in 2014. The trends include urban logistics, biomass transports, as well as the transportation of heavy cargo. The Transport White Paper of 2011 targeted for freight transport to shift from road to rail and IWW by more than 50% by 2050. The described technological and organizational as well as logistic trends are linked and evaluated regarding their impact onto model variables of the different transport models and tools employed. Technological advancements have an impact on organizational and logistics issues and cannot be discussed independently from these topics. The analysis is performed for each trend individually and does not take into account the different maturities and interdependencies among the different trends evaluated.

Abstract The effects of global warming in the Arctic region present a particular challenge for the European Union (EU), which seeks to profile itself as a leader in responding to climate change. Although the EU strives to prioritize climate protection, the Arctic region remains one of the EU’s major suppliers of energy, particularly oil and gas. The EU must thus strike a balance between climate change mitigation and adaptation, and energy security. The present article analyses the developments of the EU position in this field, particularly in light of the COP 21 negotiations, and the more recent 2016 Integrated European Union Policy for the Arctic. In doing so it seeks to explore to what extent the EU truly is fulfilling its own leadership aspirations in the field of climate change and energy in the Arctic.
