In this research, the analysis has been made amongst the different 'theories of failure' for composite materials. All theories which include bi-axial strength envelopes and stress–strain curves for a range of multi-directional laminates, loaded under uni-axial or bi-axial conditions.The predictions and experimental data have been analyzed, to identify the strengths and weakness, together with a ranking of the overall effectiveness of each theory, which has been made by the AHP-MCDM tool to facilitate the reader to select the best theory for given design situation.

A comparative analysis of typical stress-strain diagrams obtained for in-plain shear of the 25 unidirectional and cross-ply reinforced polymer matrix composites under quasi-static loading was carried out. Three of them were tested in the framework of this study, and the experimental data on other materials were taken from the literature. The analysis of the generalized shear-strength curves showed that most of the tested materials exhibit the similar deformation pattern depending on their initial shear modulus: a linear section is observed at the beginning of loading, whereas further increase of the load decreases the slope of the curve reaching the minimum in the failure point. For the three parameters (end point the linear part, maximum reduced deviation of the diagram, tangent shear modulus at the failure point) characterizing the individual features of the presented stress-strain diagrams, approximating their dependences on the value of the reduced initial shear modulus are obtained. At the characteristic points of the deformation diagrams, boundary conditions are determined that can be used to find the parameters of the approximating functions. A condition is proposed for determination of the end point of the linear section on the experimental stress-strain curve, according to which the maximum deviation between the experimental and calculated (according to Hooke’s law) values of the shear stress in this section is no more than 1%, thus ensuring rather high accuracy of approximation on the linear section of the diagram. The results of this study are recommended to use when developing universal and relatively simple in structure approximating functions that take into account the characteristic properties of the experimental curves of deformation of polymer composite materials under in-plane shear of the sheet. The minimum set of experimental data is required to determine the parameters of these functions.

This study develops a general temperature-dependent stress–strain constitutive model for polymer-bonded composite materials, allowing for the prediction of deformation behaviors under tension and compression in the testing temperature range. Laboratory testing of the material specimens in uniaxial tension and compression at multiple temperatures ranging from −40 ∘C to 75 ∘C is performed. The testing data reveal that the stress–strain response can be divided into two general regimes, namely, a short elastic part followed by the plastic part; therefore, the Ramberg–Osgood relationship is proposed to build the stress–strain constitutive model at a single temperature. By correlating the model parameters with the corresponding temperature using a response surface, a general temperature-dependent stress–strain constitutive model is established. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed model are validated using several independent sets of testing data and third-party data. The performance of the proposed model is compared with an existing reference model. The validation and comparison results show that the proposed model has a lower number of parameters and yields smaller relative errors. The proposed constitutive model is further implemented as a user material routine in a finite element package. A simple structural example using the developed user material is presented and its accuracy is verified.

In this paper, some representative hyperelastic constitutive models of rubber materials were reviewed from the perspectives of molecular chain network statistical mechanics and continuum mechanics. Based on the advantages of existing models, an improved constitutive model was developed, and the stress–strain relationship was derived. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed on two types of filled tire compounds at different temperatures. The physical phenomena related to rubber deformation were analyzed, and the temperature dependence of the mechanical behavior of filled rubber in a larger deformation range (150% strain) was revealed from multiple angles. Based on the experimental data, the ability of several models to describe the stress–strain mechanical response of carbon black filled compound was studied, and the application limitations of some constitutive models were revealed. Combined with the experimental data, the ability of Yeoh model, Ogden model (n = 3), and improved eight-chain model to characterize the temperature dependence was studied, and the laws of temperature dependence of their parameters were revealed. By fitting the uniaxial tensile test data and comparing it with the Yeoh model, the improved eight-chain model was proved to have a better ability to predict the hyperelastic behavior of rubber materials under different deformation states. Finally, the improved eight-chain model was successfully applied to finite element analysis (FEA) and compared with the experimental data. It was found that the improved eight-chain model can accurately describe the stress–strain characteristics of filled rubber.

We characterize the material properties of a woven, multi-layered, hyperelastic composite that is useful as an envelope material for high-altitude stratospheric airships and in the design of other large structures. The composite was fabricated by sandwiching a polyaramid Nomex® core, with good tensile strength, between polyimide Kapton® films with high dielectric constant, and cured with epoxy using a vacuum bagging technique. Uniaxial mechanical tests were used to stretch the individual materials and the composite to failure in the longitudinal and transverse directions respectively. The experimental data for Kapton® were fit to a five-parameter Yeoh form of nonlinear, hyperelastic and isotropic constitutive model. Image analysis of the Nomex® sheets, obtained using scanning electron microscopy, demonstrate two families of symmetrically oriented fibers at 69.3°± 7.4° and 129°± 5.3°. Stress-strain results for Nomex® were fit to a nonlinear and orthotropic Holzapfel-Gasser-Ogden (HGO) hyperelastic model with two fiber families. We used a linear decomposition of the strain energy function for the composite, based on the individual strain energy functions for Kapton® and Nomex®, obtained using experimental results. A rule of mixtures approach, using volume fractions of individual constituents present in the composite during specimen fabrication, was used to formulate the strain energy function for the composite. Model results for the composite were in good agreement with experimental stress-strain data. Constitutive properties for woven composite materials, combining nonlinear elastic properties within a composite materials framework, are required in the design of laminated pretensioned structures for civil engineering and in aerospace applications.

Abstract The increasing application of composite materials in the construction of machines causes strong need for modelling and evaluating their strength. There are many well known hypotheses used for homogeneous materials subjected to monotone and cyclic loading conditions, which have been verified experimentally by various authors. These hypotheses should be verified also for composite materials. This paper provides experimental and theoretical results of such verifications for bimaterial structures with interfacial cracks. Three well known fracture hypotheses of: Griffith, McClintock and Novozhilov were chosen. The theoretical critical load values arising from each hypotheses were compared with the experimental data including uni and multi-axial loading conditions. All tests were carried out with using specially prepared specimens of steel and PMMA.

Introduction. Conducted is to the evaluation of the stress-strain state of the steel-concrete beams with thin-walled section. In recent times, steel-reinforced concrete structures have become widely used in civilian buildings (beams, slabs, columns). Thin-walled section have not found wide application in steel concrete structures, unlike steel structures. Presents the results of numerical studies of beams consisting of concrete, anchors and steel beams. Two investigating of the location of anchors are given. Numerical investigations are presented of steel-concrete beams with thin-walled section based on numerical studies. Testing procedure and test result are given. Results of calculations, comparison of numerical and experimental studies are presented. Materials and methods. For full-scale experiments, steel I-beams with filling of side cavities with concrete were adopted, screws are used as anchor ties, with varied both the lengths and their location (vertically and obliquely). As steel curved C-shaped steel profiles were used steel profiles from the range of the company “Steel Faces”. ANSYS software package was used for computer modeling. A total of 16 steel concrete beams were considered, for which the results of strength and stiffness evaluation were obtained in ANSYS. Results. The data of the stress-strain state of beams on the basis of computer simulation are obtained. The results are used for the production of field samples. Data of computer simulation are compared with the indicators of field experiments. Conclusions. The stress-strain state of steel-concrete structures was studied on the basis of numerical and experimental data. The proposed calculation method gives good convergence with the experimental data. Anchor connections made from self-tapping screws can be used in studies for modeling in steel-concrete beams structures and other anchor devices, ensuring the joint operation of concrete and steel profiles in structures.

In this article the results of stress-strain state investigation for composite airplane wing stringer with different layers stacking structures are presented. As an object of research, a stringer made of composite carbon with V-shaped cross-section is considered. Due to the stress-strain state analysis of various stringer structures, the most effective structure for stringer layers stacking is selected, both in the view of providing the most rigidity and optimal perception by the stringer the field of external loads, which are most typical for the conditions of its operation.

Concrete is one of the most common and versatile construction materials and has been used under a wide range of environmental conditions. Temperature is one of them, which significantly affects the performance of concrete, and therefore, a careful evaluation of the effect of temperature on concrete cannot be overemphasized. In this study, an overview of the temperature effect on the compressive behavior of plain hardened concrete is experimentally provided. Concrete cylinders were prepared, cured, and stored under different temperature conditions to be tested under compression. The stress–strain curve, mode of failure, compressive strength, ultimate strain, and modulus of elasticity of concrete were evaluated between the ages of 7 and 90 days. The experimental results were used to propose constitutive models to predict the mechanical properties of concrete under the effect of temperature. Moreover, previous constitutive models were examined to capture the stress–strain relationships of concrete under the effect of temperature. Based on the experimental data and the proposed models, concrete lost 10–20% of its original compressive strength when heated to 100 °C and 30–40% at 260 °C. The previous constitutive models for stress–strain relationships of concrete at normal temperatures can be used to capture these relationships under the effect of temperature by using the compressive strength, ultimate strain, and modulus of elasticity affected by temperature. The effect of temperature on the modulus of elasticity of concrete was considered in the ACI 318-14 equation by using the compressive strength affected by temperature and the results showed good agreement with the experimental data.
