The photocatalytic activity of magnetic bentonite, Fe3O4 nanoparticles decorated Al-pillared bentonite (Fe3O4/Al-B), for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) in the presence of H2O2 under visible light (VL) was evaluated. The effects of different reaction parameters such as catalyst dose, dye concentration and externally added H2O2 were also investigated. The magnetic bentonite showed good photocatalytic activity, magnetic separability and stability for repeated use. More than 95% of 40 mg/L RhB was converted within 3 h under VL with a catalyst dose of 0.5 g/L. Suitable mechanisms have been proposed to account for the photocatalytic activities in the presence and absence of H2O2. The efficiency of H2O2 in VL process was much higher than that of the dark process. Results obtained in the current study may be useful to develop a suitable photocatalyst for photocatalytic remediation of different water contaminants including organic dyes.

In this paper, W-doped TiO2 (W-TiO2) powder was prepared in hydrothermal method by mixing TiO2 and ammonium metatungstate. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet spectrophotometer. The results displayed that W-TiO2 showed an anatase crystallite structure with 2 % W content. W-element in W-TiO2 was amorphous state. The guaiacol was degraded with the W-TiO2 in the visible light. It was a model compounds of lignin existed in the plant fibers. The degradation rate of guaiacol was increased with the photocatalytic time, as high as 88.21 % after 360 min irradiation. It was concluded that the W-TiO2 had an obvious photocatalytic activity under visible light. It can be used in the photocatalytic degradation of lignin.

A silicon dioxide/carbon nano onions/titanium dioxide (SiO2/CNOs/TiO2) composite was synthesized by a simple sol-gel method and characterized by the methods of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-Vis DRS). In this work, the photocatalytic activity of the SiO2/CNOs/TiO2 photocatalyst was assessed by testing the degradation rate of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light. The results indicated that the samples exhibited the best photocatalytic activity when the composite consisted of 3% CNOs and the optimum dosage of SiO2/CNOs/TiO2(3%) was 1.5 g/L as evidenced by the highest RhB degradation rate (96%). The SiO2/CNOs/TiO2 composite greatly improved the quantum efficiency of TiO2. This work provides a new option for the modification of subsequent nanocomposite oxide nanoparticles.

In this paper, a novel heterostructure of 0D/3D-CdSe/Bi[Formula: see text]TiO[Formula: see text] pyramidal photocatalyst was synthesized and characterized. It exhibited significantly photocatalytic efficiency in photocatalytic degradation of the tetracycline than pure Bi[Formula: see text]TiO2 and CdSe and showed high stability. The enhanced photocatalytic activity might be attributed to the formation of heterostructure between CdSe QDs and 3D Bi[Formula: see text]TiO[Formula: see text], in which CdSe QDs served as electron trapper to improve the separation of photodegradation electron–hole pairs, and provided a number of active adsorption sites for the photogenerated of pollutants. The photocatalytic mechanism of 0D/3D-CdSe/Bi[Formula: see text]TiO[Formula: see text] pyramidal heterostructure was also proposed.

Bi2WO6 doped with iodine ions were synthesized using hydrothermal method and their photocatalytic activities to degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light was investigated. The successful incorporation of I ions in Bi2WO6 was proved by XRD and XPS. UV-vis absorption spectra results show that I ion was successfully doped into Bi2WO6 and a red shift for I-doped Bi2WO6 appeared when compared to pure Bi2WO6. The photocatalytic activities of the photocatalysts were evaluated by the decolorization of RhB under visible-light irradiation. The results showed that the photocatalytic activity of I-doped Bi2WO6 was much higher than the undoped Bi2WO6.

Ce, Nd and Gd doped strontium titanate nanomaterial was prepared by a sol-gel method. Effects of transition metals doping on photocatalytic activities of the prepared materials were studied. The pure strontium titanate had photocatalytic degradation activity of 31.0%. The maximum degradation rate happened at Ce content of 20% and nearly 32.5% of the initial methyl orange was degraded on the material after 30 min of irradiation. Although there was a slight variation of photocatalytic degradation rate with the increasing Nd doping content, the materials doped with Nd had lower photocatalytic activity compared with pure strontium titanate. Nearly all the samples doped with Gd in the range up to 30% had much lower activity that the pure strontium titanate.

Abstract A novel binary BiSI/Ag2CO3 photocatalyst with excellent visible light-driven photocatalytic performance was prepared. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The photocatalytic activity of the samples were evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B(RhB) under the irradiation of visible light. The results showed that the BiSI improves the photocatalytic activity of BiSI/Ag2CO3. Moreover, when the mass ratio of BiSI in BiSI/Ag2CO3 composites was 40%, the as-prepared BiSI/Ag2CO3 composite exhibited the best photocatalytic activity for degrading RhB. Finally, the possible mechanism for photodegradation over the BiSI/Ag2CO3 composites is also proposed.

Bi2O3 has successfully been synthesized using precipitation method with sintering temperature variations of 400oC, 450o C, 500o C, 550o C, and 600o C. Crystallinity property of resulting Bi2O3 powder has also been tested with XRD and morphology properties were tested with SEM. Meanwhile, photocatalytic properties were tested by using it to degrade Rhodamine B under sunlight. Results of XRD tests show that differences in sintering temperature affect crystallite size. Increases in sintering temperature between 400o C and 500o C result in greater crystallite size, whereas sintering temperature between 550o C and 600oC result in smaller crystallite size. Results of SEM tests show that resulting Bi2O3 has rod-like structure, While results of degradation tests show that increases in sintering temperature enhances photocatalytic activities of Bi2O3, as evident with Bi2O3 undergoing sintering at 600oC was able to degrade Rhodamine B with 56.74% effectiveness and degradation rate of 0.007 ppm/min.

In this paper, two newly explored TiO2 photocatalyst sensitized with commercial stable pigment (BYH3G and PR254) were prepared and characterized by FT–IR, UV–Vis, XRD and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. The adsorption capacities and the photocatalytic activities of as-prepared photocatalysts were evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of Methyl Orange and Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. The as-prepared photocatalysts displayed high visible light photocatalytic activity than pure TiO2 under the same conditions. The photocatalytic activity can be reproduced commendably demonstrates that the as-prepared photocatalysts are stable and renewable, which are potentially important properties in the application of industrial wastewater treatment.
