Reduction Methods of Structure Models for Control System Purposes

To design vibration control system for flexible structures their mathematical model should be reduced. In the paper we consider the influence of the model reduction on the dynamics of the real closed-loop system. A simply cantilever beam is an object of consideration since we are able to formulate the exact analytical model of such structure. As a result of reduction the model with low frequency resonances is usually separated from the high frequency dynamics because high frequency part of the model is naturally strong damped. In order to estimate dynamical system for control purposes in the paper we applied a few orthogonal methods such as: modal, Rayleigh-Ritz and Schur decompositions. As it is shown all methods well calculate resonances frequencies but generate different anti-resonances frequencies. From control strategy in point of view of the flexible structures these anti-resonances have significantly influence on the stability and dynamics of the closed-loop systems.

For several decades, disturbance observers (DOs) have been widely utilized to enhance tracking performance by reducing external disturbances in different industrial applications. However, although a DO is a verified control structure, a conventional DO does not guarantee stability. This paper proposes a stability-guaranteed design method, while maintaining the DO structure. The proposed design method uses a linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based H∞ control because the LMI-based control guarantees the stability of closed loop systems. However, applying the DO design to the LMI framework is not trivial because there are two control targets, whereas the standard LMI stabilizes a single control target. In this study, the problem is first resolved by building a single fictitious model because the two models are serial and can be considered as a single model from the Q-filter point of view. Using the proposed design framework, all-stabilizing Q filters are calculated. In addition, for the stability and robustness of the DO, two metrics are proposed to quantify the stability and robustness and combined into a single unified index to satisfy both metrics. Based on an application example, it is verified that the proposed method is effective, with a performance improvement of 10.8%.

In order to investigate self-excited vibration mechanism of wheel-rail lateral contact system, a two DOF elasticity position wheelset lateral vibration model is established which considers the dry friction; the mechanism of the wheelset lateral self-excited vibration is investigated from the energy point of view. It shows that: the bifurcation diagram of this wheel-rail lateral contact system has a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The energy of self-excited vibration derives from a part of traction energy; the creep rate in the wheel-rail system act as a feedback mechanism in the wheelset lateral self-excited vibration system. The stability of the wheelset self-excited vibration system depends mainly on the total energy removed from and imported into the system.

Sleep plays a primary function for health and sustains physical and cognitive performance. Although various stimulation systems for enhancing sleep have been developed, they are difficult to use on a long-term basis. This paper proposes a novel stimulation system and confirms its feasibility for sleep. Specifically, in this study, a closed-loop vibration stimulation system that detects the heart rate (HR) and applies −n% stimulus beats per minute (BPM) computed on the basis of the previous 5 min of HR data was developed. Ten subjects participated in the evaluation experiment, in which they took a nap for approximately 90 min. The experiment comprised one baseline and three stimulation conditions. HR variability analysis showed that the normalized low frequency (LF) and LF/high frequency (HF) parameters significantly decreased compared to the baseline condition, while the normalized HF parameter significantly increased under the −3% stimulation condition. In addition, the HR density around the stimulus BPM significantly increased under the −3% stimulation condition. The results confirm that the proposed stimulation system could influence heart rhythm and stabilize the autonomic nervous system. This study thus provides a new stimulation approach to enhance the quality of sleep and has the potential for enhancing health levels through sleep manipulation.

The study presents model-based mechanism of nonlinear cutting tool vibration in turning process and the strategy of improving cutting process stability by suppressing machine tool vibration. The approach used is based on the closed-loop feedback control system with the help of electro–magneto–rheological damper. A machine tool vibration signal generated by an accelerometer is fed back to the coil of a damper after suitable amplification. The damper, attached under the tool holder, generates counter forces to suppress the vibration after being excited by the signal in terms of current. The study also discusses the use of transfer function approach for the development of a mathematical model and adaptively controlling the process dynamics of the turning process. The purpose of developing such mechanism is to stabilize the machining process with respect to the dynamic uncut chip thickness responsible for the type-II regenerative effect. The state-space model used in this study successfully checked the adequacy of the model through controllability and observability matrices. The eigenvalue and eigenvector have confirmed the stability of the system more accurately. The characteristic of the stability lobe chart is discussed for the present model-based mechanism.

Sloshing is a complex nonlinear dynamic phenomenon which has a significant influence on the stability of structure–fluid systems. In this study, the dynamic equation of sloshing based on Hamilton principle is established and linearized into a state space equation. Considering the uncertainty of the system, a robust H infinite guaranteed cost control method is proposed to mitigate the response of fluid wave height to horizontal acceleration of the tank body. Simulation results are given to demonstrate the closed-loop performance of the nonlinear dynamic modeling and linear optimal control method.

In this paper, a stability-driven optimal disturbance observer (DO) is proposed. The proposed method does not require any plant inverse dynamics to detect introduced disturbances or a stabilizing Q filter. It does not require additional compensators to resolve causality problems, due to the relative degree, or filters to solve instability problems of non-minimum phase plants. Using this method enables wideband and narrowband disturbances to be attenuated by simply multiplying the corresponding peak filters by the baseline weight function. Furthermore, the proposed DO guarantees the stability of closed-loop systems because the already designed outer-loop systems are considered as a target plant to be stabilized and because of the Lyapunov stability-based H∞ control. In the application example, it was confirmed that the proposed method is effective, and the position error signals were improved by 20.9% in commercial hard disk drives and 36.6% in optical image stabilization systems.

The phase diagram of the acetone–water system shows that acetone hydrate decomposes at an incongruent melting point. The existence of acetone hydrate is confirmed by a study of the low-frequency dielectric properties of this system. A dispersion region, related to the relaxation of water molecules in the clathrate structure, is characterized by a "static" dielectric constant and an activation energy about half as large as the corresponding values for ice, and by a limiting high-frequency dielectric constant of about 7 at 200° K. The magnitude of the latter is attributed to orientation of acetone molecules within the larger cavities of the hydrate structure.

Abstract This paper addresses the stability and control problem of linear positive two-dimensional discrete-time systems with multiple delays in the second Fornasini–Marchesini model. The contribution lies in three aspects. First, a novel proof is provided to establish necessary and sufficient conditions of asymptotic stability for positive two-dimensional delayed systems. Then, a state-feedback controller is designed to ensure the non-negativity and stability of the closed-loop systems. Finally, a sufficient condition for the existence of constrained controllers is developed under the additional constraint of bounded control, which means that the control inputs and the states of the closed-loop systems are bounded. Two examples are given to validate the proposed methods.
