Experimental Studies to Understand the Hover and Forward Flight Performance of a MAV-Scale Flapping Wing Concept

Systematic experimental studies were performed to understand the role of two key degrees of freedom, flapping and pitching, in aerodynamic performance of a flapping wing, in both hover and forward flight. Required flapping kinematics is prescribed mechanically, and dynamic pitching/twisting is obtained passively using inertial and aerodynamic forces. Forces produced by the wing are measured at the root using a six-component balance at different flapping frequencies, flapping/pitching amplitudes, and wind speeds. The results clearly show that maximum average thrust over a flap cycle in hover can be achieved using symmetric, high amplitude passive pitching. However, in forward flight, optimum aerodynamic performance (lift and propulsive thrust) is obtained using asymmetric wing pitching with low pitching amplitudes. Furthermore, dynamic twisting (obtained using flexible wings), instead of dynamic pitching, produces better performance in forward flight due to spanwise and temporal modulation of the wing pitch angle. Pure flapping (no pitching) of rigid wings in forward flight at high reduced frequencies and high pitch angles produces a threefold increase in lift coefficient over static values. Maximum average propulsive thrust over a flap cycle in forward flight is obtained using symmetric pitching. To produce high values of both, average lift and thrust, an asymmetry in kinematics along with pitching is required in forward flight. This can be achieved either through asymmetric pitching of rigid wings or dynamic twisting of torsionally flexible wings.

Abstract Flapping, flexible wings deform under both aerodynamic and inertial loads. However, the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) governing flapping wing dynamics is not well understood. Conventional FSI models require excessive computational resources and are not conducive to parameter studies that consider variable wing kinematics or geometry. Here, we present a simple two-way coupled FSI model for a wing subjected to single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) rotation. The model is reduced-order and can be solved several orders of magnitude faster than direct computational methods. We construct a SDOF rotation stage and measure basal strain of a flapping wing in-air and in-vacuum to study our model experimentally. Overall, agreement between theory and experiment is excellent. In-vacuum, the wing has a large 3ω response when flapping at approximately 1/3 its natural frequency. This response is attenuated substantially when flapping in-air as a result of aerodynamic damping. These results highlight the importance of two-way coupling between the fluid and structure, since one-way coupled approaches cannot describe such phenomena. Moving forward, our model enables advanced studies of biological flight and facilitates bio-inspired design of flapping wing technologies.

Beetles have attracted attention from researchers due to their unique combination of a passively flapping forewing and an actively flapping hindwing during flight. Because the wing loads of beetles are larger than the wing loads of other insects, the mechanism of beetle flight is potentially useful for modeling a small aircraft with a large weight. In this paper, we present a beetle-type ornithopter in which the wings are geometrically and kinematically modeled after an actual beetle. Furthermore, the forewing is designed to be changeable between no-wing, flapping-wing, or fixed-wing configurations. Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) differential pressure sensors were attached to both the forewing and the hindwing to evaluate the aerodynamic performance during flight. Whether the forewing is configured as a flapping wing or a fixed wing, it generated constant positive differential pressure during forward flight, whereas the differential pressure on the hindwing varied with the flapping motion during forward flight. The experimental results suggest that beetles utilize the forewing for effective vertical force enhancement.

Since the theoretical aeroelasticity for flapping-wing aerodynamics was introduced in the 1920s, the effects of flexibility on aeroelasticity have been paid more attention to aerodynamic design. In recent years, the trait of the wing flexibility is applied for small-scale wings of biomimetic flyers including micro air vehicles and mini unmanned aerial vehicles. Until now, the aerodynamic performance and great agility of these flyers, which are beneficially used for military missions and other civilian applications, have been improved through surrogate flapping wings with the favorable effects of the flexibility. As per the aeroelasticity principle for the forward flying, the chordwise flexibility of an elastic flapping wing can generate thrust and lift redistributions, whereas the spanwise flexibility can result in variations of the angle of attack and the shift of phase along the wingspan direction. Consequently, all vortices generated by the flapping wing i.e. (1) leading-edge vortices, (2) tip vortices, and (3) trailing-edge vortices are blended supportively, thereby improving the aerodynamic performance and agility. Hence, the growth of research and development of the aerodynamic performance and agility for these flyers under the influence of flexible wings increases through experimental and computational studies dynamically and rapidly. This review aims to highlight the important role of the flexibility in the recent progress in wing aerodynamics of these flyers through several wing models done by famous groups of experts in this field. In addition, this review includes the acoustics of the wings under the flexibility effects which is considered as a new key for better flyer design and improvement. A comprehensive understanding of the integrated aerodynamics and acoustics under the wing flexibility is, therefore, needed.

To investigate the aerodynamic performance of a flexible flapping wing aircraft, a flapping-wing system were design and an experiment were set up to measure the unsteady aerodynamic forces of the flapping motion. The thrust formula and resistance formula described aerodynamic forces. The lift and thrust of this mechanism were measured for different angles of attack and wind velocities. Results indicate that the thrust increases with the flapping frequency and the lift increase with the wind velocity, while the lift coefficient decreases while the velocity increases. It is realized that the wing’s transformation which imitated birds leads less resistance when flapping upward which impacts the aerodynamic lift generation and the bionic winglet leads to a change in the leading edge vortex and span-wise flow structures, which decrease the airflow’s backward pull. Models were introduced which were used in the design process and show its aerodynamic performance. The flexible flapping wing vehicle is still an open research area.

Abstract. A multi-mode flapping wing micro air vehicle (FWMAV) that uses a figure eight wingtip motion trajectory with wing flapping, rotation, and swing motion is presented in this paper. The flapping wing vehicle achieves three active degrees of freedom (DOF) wing movements only with one driving micromotor which has a good balance in the mechanism design (that is inspired by natural fliers) and total weight. Owing to these characteristics being integrated into the simple mechanism design, the aerodynamic force is improved. The aerodynamic performance of the thrust force is improved by 64.3 % compared to one that could only flap up and down with one active DOF under the condition of routine flapping frequency.

Non-pneumatic tyres (NPT) provide a greater advantage over the pneumatic type owing to their construct which increases the reliability of the tyre operation and effectively reduces maintenance involved. Analysing the aerodynamic forces acting on a NPT becomes a crucial factor in understanding it’s suitability for practical implementation. In the present work, the aerodynamic performance of a NPT using CFD tool – SimScale® is studied. This work includes a comparative study of a pneumatic tyre, a NPT with wedge spokes and a NPT with hexagonal spokes (NPT-HS). The effect of air velocity, steering (yaw) angle and camber angle on the aerodynamic performance of the NPT-HS is evaluated using CFD. By increasing the steering angle from 0° to 15°, the lift coefficient decreases by 37% approximately at all velocities. Whereas drag coefficient initially decreases by 21% till 7.5° steering angle and then starts increasing. Increasing camber angle from 0° to 1.5°, both drag and lift coefficients goes on decreasing by approximately 7% and 27% respectively.

Gulf and South African countries have enormous potential for wind energy. However, the emergence of sand storms in this region postulates performance and reliability challenges on wind turbines. This study investigates the effects of debris flow on wind turbine blade performance. In this paper, two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the transition SST turbulence model are used to analyze the aerodynamic performance of NACA 63415 airfoil under clean and sandy conditions. The numerical simulation of the airfoil under clean surface condition is performed at Reynolds number 460×103, and the numerical results have a good consistency with the experimental data. The Discrete Phase Model has been used to investigate the role sand particles play in the aerodynamic performance degradation. The pressure and lift coefficients of the airfoil have been computed under different sand particles flow rates. The performance of the airfoil under different angle of attacks has been studied. Results showed that the blade lift coefficient can deteriorate by 28% in conditions relevant to the Gulf and South African countries sand storms. As a result, the numerical simulation method has been verified to be economically available for accurate estimation of the sand particles effect on the wind turbine blades.

Compared with suction slots, suction holes are (1) flexible in distribution; (2) alterable in size; (3) easy to fabricate and (4) high in strength. In this paper, the numerical and experimental studies for a high turning compressor cascade with suction air removed by using suction holes in the end-wall at a low Mach numbers are carried out. The main objective of the investigation is to study the influence of different suction distributions on the aerodynamic performance of the compressor cascade and to find a better compound suction scheme. A numerical model was first made and validated by comparing with the experimental results. The computed flow visualization and exit parameter distribution showed a good agreement with experimental data. Second, the model was then used to simulate the influence of different suction distributions on the aerodynamic performance of the compressor cascade. A better compound suction scheme was obtained by summarizing numerical results and tested in a low speed wind tunnel. As a result, the compound suction scheme can be used to significantly improve the performance of the compressor cascade because the corner separation gets further suppressed.

Integrated single-axis force sensors allow an accurate and cost-efficient force measurement in 6 degrees of freedom for hexapod structures and kinematics. Depending on the sensor placement, the measurement is affected by internal forces that need to be compensated for by a measurement model. Since the parameters of the model can change during machine usage, a fast and easy calibration procedure is requested. This work studies parameter identification procedures for force measurement models on the example of a rigid hexapod-based end-effector. First, measurement and identification models are presented and parameter sensitivities are analysed. Next, two excitation strategies are applied and discussed: identification from quasi-static poses and identification from accelerated continuous trajectories. Both poses and trajectories are optimized by different criteria and evaluated in comparison. Finally, the procedures are validated by experimental studies with reference payloads. In conclusion, both strategies allow accurate parameter identification within a fast procedure in an operational machine state.
