Purpose: The focus of this retrospective review paper is toexplore and analyse pedagogic research development in physiotherapy education in South Africa.Methods: A content analysis of publications by educators in the SA Journal of Physiotherapy between 1989 and 2003 was conducted to identify and classify the pedagogic articles. Further analysis of physiotherapy education articles was performed to determine the primary foci of the education research, using a three- dimensional pedagogic outcomes research framework.Data analysis: Descriptive statistics in terms of frequencies, means and percentages was used for the analysis. Results: The results revealed that most of the educators’ articles focused on clinical practice. Only 23% of the articles were about education and the majority of those were on clinical education (72%), with few articles on curriculum issues and teaching methods. Conclusion: The research focus of South African Physiotherapy educators is more on the clinical practice, and not on education. The importance of linking research, clinical practice and education cannot be overemphasized, hence the need to develop research in education.

Nudaurelia capensis β virus (NβV) is an RNA virus of the South African Pine Emperor moth, Nudaurelia cytherea capensis (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). The NβV capsid is a T = 4 icosahedron that contains 60T = 240 subunits of the coat protein (Mr = 61,000). A three-dimensional reconstruction of the NβV capsid was previously computed from visions embedded in negative stain suspended over holes in a carbon film. We have re-examined the three-dimensional structure of NβV, using cryo-microscopy to examine the native, unstained structure of the virion and to provide a initial phasing model for high-resolution x-ray crystallographic studiesNβV was purified and prepared for cryo-microscopy as described. Micrographs were recorded ∼1 - 2 μm underfocus at a magnification of 49,000X with a total electron dose of about 1800 e-/nm2.

The didactics is configured as a broad field of investigation and has as object of study the teaching process. It encompasses several actions on pedagogical practice, but also involves the conception of education that the teacher possesses, since to human and integral formation it is necessary to consider the political, social, cultural and economic scenario in which the subjects are inserted. In the light of the above, the objective of this article is to analyze from the productions in the field, specifically the Working Group on Didactics (GT04) of the National Association of Postgraduate and Research in Education (ANPED), which reveal about the role of didactics in teacher training. It is based on the qualitative research, of the bibliographic type; the data collection took place in the ANPED database between 2007-2017 and data analysis was performed from a descriptiveanalytical perspective. The results reveal mainly the research focus in the researched area.

This paper presents a brief description of some of the author’s perceptions of the land, of physiotherapy education and practice and of the struggle of the nation of South Africa acquired during a 4 week visit in late spring 1997. One week was spent in Cape Town participating in several venues at the International Congress of the South African Society of Physiotherapy. Three weeks were spent at the University of the Witswatersrand in Johannesburg presenting a course in qualitative research to health care colleagues representing the disciplines of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and occupational health. During the time in Johannesburg several health care facilities were visited including Baragwanath Hospital, Natal Hospital and the Wits Rural Facility and Tinswalo Hospital at Acornhoek.

The article discusses variant anatomy of the renal arteries, potentials of three-dimensional modeling and use of these data in clinical practice. Despite a large number of studies based on both morphological and clinical approaches there is no general consensus regarding options for dividing the renal artery, the number of its branches, their topolocalization. This is due to the fact that most of the research studies are based on cadaveric material, fixed and unfixed. It is difficult to apply these data to explain medical conditions and pathologies of particular patients. Computed tomography allows performing in vivo investigation of various morphometric parameters of the renal arteries, and these findings can subsequently be used in disease diagnostics and treatment.The aim of the study was to identify patterns of topography, linear dimensions and variant anatomy of the human renal arteries based on computed tomography angiography (CTA) with three-dimensional modeling, and to apply CTA findings in clinical practice.Material and methods. The study included CTA images of the abdomen of 130 patients, and their threedimensional models. A hardware-software complex "Luch-S" and software complex "Avtoplan" (Russian project) were used to perform morphometric analysis. The diameter of the renal artery mouth, the level of origin of the renal artery mouths, as well as the angles between the renal arteries and the abdominal aorta were analyzed morphometrically and statistically.Results. The authors have developed recommendations how to use three-dimensional modeling of vascular- organ complexes in patients at the stage of preoperative planning and intraoperative navigation in clinical practice. Generated dataset of personalized morphometric data can be applied to teach basic operation techniques involving possible damage to abnormal vessels, as well as training specific surgical procedures involving the kidney and its vessels in a simulation-based surgical clinic.

About 200 years ago the invention of the steam engine triggered a wave of unprecedented development and growth in human social and economic systems, whereby human labour was either augmented or completely supplanted by machines. The recent emergence of artificially intelligent machines has seen human cognitive capacity enhanced by computational agents that are able to recognise previously hidden patterns within massive data sets. The characteristics of this technological advance are already influencing all aspects of society, creating the conditions for disruption to our social, economic, education, health, legal and moral systems, and which may have a more significant impact on human progress than did the steam engine. As this emerging technology becomes increasingly embedded within devices and systems, the fundamental nature of clinical practice will evolve, resulting in a healthcare system that may require concomitant changes to health professions education. Clinicians in the near future will find themselves working with information networks on a scale well beyond the capacity of human beings to grasp, thereby necessitating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse and interpret the complex interactions of data, patients and the newly-constituted care teams that will emerge. This paper describes some of the possible influences of AI-based technologies on physiotherapy practice, and the subsequent ways in which physiotherapy education will need to change in order to graduate professionals who are fit for practice in a 21st-century health system.
