The purpose of this work is to obtain comprehensive reference data of the Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy base material: its microstructure, mechanical, and physicochemical properties. In order to obtain extensive information on the tested materials, a number of examination methods were used, including SEM, XRD, and XPS to determine the phases occurring in the material, while mechanical properties were verified with static tensile, compression, and bending tests. Moreover, the alloy’s corrosion resistance in Ringer’s solution and the cytotoxicity were investigated using the MTT test. Studies have shown that this alloy has the structure α’, α, and β phases, indicating that parts of the β phase transformed to α’, which was confirmed by mechanical properties and the shape of fractures. Due to the good mechanical properties (E = 84.1 GPa), high corrosion resistance, as well as the lack of cytotoxicity on MC3T3 and NHDF cells, this alloy meets the requirements for medical implant materials. Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy can be successfully used in implants, including bone tissue engineering products and dental applications.

This paper describes an investigation of nano-Al2O3 powders reinforced ceramic coatings, which has included NiCrAl and Al2O3+13%wt.TiO2 coats pre-produced by atmosphere plasma spraying, implemented by laser sintering. Commercial NiCrAl powders were plasma sprayed onto 45 Steel substrates to give a bond coat with thickness of ∼100μm. The 600μm thick Al2O3+13%wt.TiO2 based coating was also plasma sprayed on top of the NiCrAl bond coat. With 2.5kw continuous wave CO2 laser, nano-Al2O3 ceramic powders were laser sintered on the based Coatings. The micro structure and chemical composition of the modified Al2O3+13%wt.TiO2 coatings were analyzed by such detection devices as scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Microhardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the modified coatings were also tested and compared with that of the unmodified. The results show that the crystal grain size of Al2O3 had no obvious growth. In addition, due to the nanostructured Al2O3 ceramic phases, the coatings exhibited higher microhardness, better wear resistance and corrosion resistance than those unmodified counterparts. The complex process of plasma spraying with laser sintering as a potential effective way of the application of ceramic nano materials was also simply discussed and summarized in the end.

The effects of the duration of potentiostatic anodizing on the corrosion resistance and surface morphology of anodic oxide films formed on Mg-Al alloy (AZ91) in 1 M NaOH were investigated. With the formation of an anodic film, the current density decreased gradually, started to stabilize at 300 s, and was relatively constant at 600 s. These results may be related to the increased time for catalysis of the active dissolution reaction, which not only enlarges the area covered by the anodic film, but also produces a more coherent, thicker film. The reference corrosion potentials of the anodic oxide film for AZ91 shifted in the noble direction with time. In general, the corrosion resistance characteristics were improved with anodizing time.

Abstract A typical structure of thermal spray coatings consisted of molten particles, semi-molten particles, oxides, pores and cracks. These factors caused the porosity of sprayed coatings, leading to a great influence on the coating properties, especially their wear-corrosion resistance. In this study, a post-spray sealing treatment of Cr3C2-NiCr/Al2O3-TiO2 plasma sprayed coatings was carried out, then their corrosion properties were evaluated, before and after the treatment. For sealing process, aluminum phosphate (APP) containing aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles (~10 nm) was used. The permeability of APP into the sprayed coating was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The treatment efficiency for porosity and corrosion resistance of sprayed coatings were evaluated by electrochemical measurements, such as the potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. In addition, the wear-corrosion resistance of the sealed coating was examined in 3.5 wt.% NaCl circulation solution containing 0.25 wt.% SiO2 particles. The obtained results showed that APP penetrated deeply through the sprayed coating. The incorporation of Al2O3 nanoparticles into APP sealant enhanced the treatment efficiency of porosity for sprayed coating. The effect of the post-treatment on corrosion protection of the sprayed coating has been discussed.

A final thermomechanical treatment (FTMT) including peak aging and subsequent dynamic aging was proposed to prepare 7055 Al alloy sheets. The optimization was based on nine well-planned orthogonal experiments. Three main processing conditions in the thermomechanical treatment for obtaining the optimum synthetic properties of 7055 (i.e. preheating temperature, final rolling temperature and deformation degree) were investigated. It was shown that the final rolling temperature is the most important factor among the three parameters, and the optimum properties (yield strength: 651 MPa, ultimate tensile strength: 660 MPa) of 7055 Al alloy sheet can be gained with preheating at 140oC and 40% deformation at 170oC. With dynamic aging, grain boundary precipitates became discontinuous without much coarsening of matrix precipitates, while they were continuously distributed after T6 aging. The present optimal FTMT process can improve the intergranular / exfoliation corrosion resistance without sacrificing the strength compared to T6 tempering. The present FTMT process as a good alternative can produce high-strength Al alloy sheets with high strength and good corrosion resistance efficiently and economically.

Corrosion resistance of Zr that has been added to an Al alloy (U1070) is higher than that of a commercial Al alloy (A1070). A decreasing number and size of Al3Fe intermetallic particles (IMPs) were observed by electron microprobe analysis and transmission electron microscopy. Based on the numerical corrosion simulation, it was confirmed that decreasing the number and size of IMPs was favorable for improving the corrosion resistance of the Al alloy due to the reduction of the galvanic effect. In addition, Al3Zr was found to be insignificant in promoting galvanic corrosion within the Al matrix. Thus, Zr is an advantageous alloying element for improving the corrosion resistance of the Al alloy.
