Herbage yield increased with elevation from 2200 to 2600 m and then declined until 2800 m. Altitude did not affect herbage fat, acid detergent fibre, calcium or sulphur concentrations, but did influence herbage organic matter, crude protein and phosphorus concentrations. It is recommended that livestock should be rotationally grazed along an altitudinal gradient on Xiaowutai Mountain to meet their dry matter (DM) and nutrients requirements in summer grazing systems.
