The results of realized in 2010 field researches of the spatial and time grain-size structure variability of beach and bottom sediments of the bay-bar Anapskaya southern part are presented in this paper. Irretrievable carrying out of sediment particles to depths more than 7 m intensifies with their size decrease to 0,1 mm. As over 70 % bottom and about 60 % beach sediments are presented by fractions less 0,16 mm on bay-bar Anapskaya southern part, namely at this part there is sand material massive carrying out to depth. Potential danger of the investigated site geosystem degradation is revealed.

A three-dimensional model of morphodynamics after offshore nourishment was developed. In the presented model, the 3D beach evolution model that is not only after nourishment but also taking into account the nourishment process of injected sand material. In order to consider the injected process of sand, the computation using the advection-diffusion equation for suspended sediment concentration was adapted in the model. The presented model was applied to an idealized beach with two groins in order to investigate the performance of the model, and then, the model was applied to a field observation result for shoreface nourishment carried out at the Egmond aan Zee in the Netherlands. Finally, the applicability of the presented model was discussed from the computed results.

Sand mixed with geotextile/fiber/cement/lime or non-traditional chemical additives to form composite materials is recognized as an effective method for improving the sand properties. In this work, the variation in properties of composite materials after immersion is reported which has rarely appeared in the literature. The focus of this study is to evaluate the shear behaviors of polymer-sand composite material after immersion with direct shear tests. Several factors which may influence the shear behaviors after immersion are analyzed. The results demonstrate that this composite material still has good shear behaviors after immersion when compared to the purely sand material. The shear behaviors are improved with an increment in the curing time, polymer content and sand dry density while there is a decrease in the shear behaviors with increasing immersion time. The interaction between sand particles and the polymer are analyzed with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The polymer membranes are formed by polymer enwrapping and connected sand particles to build an elastic and viscous structure in the sand that increases the interlocking forces between sand particles and decreases the void ratio of this material. The membranes are softened in water resulting in a decrease in the shear strength. Moreover, other factors affect the shear behaviors by improving the completeness and stability of this structure.

Numerical simulation of small-scale explosion in dry sand using two sand material models including the Sand model and the LA model were carried out in the present study. Three cases were considered which the depths of burial (DOB) of the explosive C4 charge were 0, 30 mm and 80 mm, respectively. The time arrival of the blast-wave front and the maximum overpressure of fixed measuring locations were studied using a two dimensional axisymmetric model in hydrocode ANSYS/AUTODYN. Furthermore, the crater diameters and the heights of detonation product cloud respect to the time were also studied by comparing with the test data. The simulation results indicate that the both sand material models were hardly predict the test data exactly which proves that the sand properties and the material model should be more carefully studied and defined.

Cylindrical samples containing 0.59 mm to 0.84 mm diameter silica sand at about 97% and 55% ice saturation (the ratio of ice volume to sand pore volume) were tested at a temperature of −12° C in triaxial compression. Both constant axial strain-rate tests and step-stress creep tests provide information on the influence of confining pressure on the shear strength and creep behavior of the sand–ice material. Changes in the degree of ice saturation help show the influence of the ice matrix versus the sand material on the mechanical behavior. Data are discussed in terms of the Mohr–Coulomb failure law and creep theories. It is shown that the cohesive component of strength depends on response of the ice matrix, whereas the frictional component of strength responds in a manner very similar to unfrozen sand tested at high confining pressures. Experimental data show that creep rates decrease exponentially and creep strength increases with an increase in confining pressure.

The available sand material for a breakwater foundation is mixed with shells. The shell percentage of the sand material is variable and percentages up to even 50% are observed. It is essential to evaluate the properties and the behaviour of the sand-shell mixture as this will form the improved breakwater foundation. In reality the backfilled sand of the breakwater foundation has different relative densities in different depths. In this study the mechanical properties of the sand-shell mixture for different relative densities are evaluated. For different relative densities of sand-shell mixture the direct shear tests and the consolidated undrained triaxial tests are carried out on some samples. The results of the experiments showed that the samples with higher relative density show a higher internal friction angle. However, for the samples with even low relative density, an internal friction angle of less than 32° is not observed. The volume variation of the samples with different relative densities are monitored. Samples with low relative density showed a contraction behaviour; resulting in an increase of the pore water pressure, a reduction of the effective strength and finally the samples become susceptible to liquefaction. While the samples with high relative density showed a dilatancy behaviour.
