Purpose: The number of people suffering from Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is increasing. The disease causes heavy pain and restrict a number of day-to-day life activities. In extreme cases, the degraded disc is removed under total disc replacement which is usually made up of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). The material has astounding biocompatible characteristics mechanical properties and wear resistance. However, these characteristics are insufficient in arthroplasty application. Therefore, research investigations are ongoing to improve tribological properties through reinforcement that may result in a composite material of UHMWPE. Thus the current study is aimed at reinforcing UHMWPE with short fibres of polyesters to enhance the tribological properties and surface characteristic so as to improve wear resistance and nourish the fibroblast cells on synthetic disc. Design/methodology/approach: The researcher prepared UHMWPE composite material, reinforced with different weight fractions of short polyester fibres (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% following hot press method. Further pin-on-disc device was used to study the tribological properties (coefficient of friction and volume of wear). The study tested surface roughness and surface characteristics by atomic force microscopy (AFM) device, hardness by shore D device, contact angle to study the effect of polyester short fibres on wettability of UHMWPE surface and tested the thermal properties and crystalline degree using Differential Scanning Calorimetry measurement (DSC) device. Findings: The results infer that the wear resistance got improved when using 2% w.t polyester though it got decreased initially. However, the value was still more than neat UHMWPE. There was a decrease observed in coefficient of friction, but after 4 w.t% polyester, the coefficient of friction got increased due to increasing percentage of fibres which make it harder and stiff compared to UHMWPE. There was a decline observed in surface roughness due to alignment of the fibres with smooth surface. The contact angle got increased in a moderate range while the roughness enhanced the growth of fibroblast cell. The hardness of composite material got increased, because the fibres turned stiffer and harder than the matrix. DSC results infer the improvements in thermal stability due to high thermal properties of polyester fibres compared to UHMWPE. The degree of crystallinity got increased which in turn enhanced wear resistance, especially at 6 w.t % polyester fibres. There was a mild increase observed in density since the density of polyester is higher than polymer. Research limitations/implications: The major challenge was the dispersion of fibres. Uniform distribution of fibres within the matrix (UHMWPE) was achieved through two steps of mixing processes such as mechanical mixture and twin extruder. In future studies, fatigue tests must be conducted to study the behaviour of prepared composite materials under fatigue cycle. Practical implications: A significant objective is how to connect among different properties to obtain good improvement in tribological and surface properties so as to enhance wear resistance and growth of fibrolase cells. Originality/value: In this study, polymeric short fibres were used as reinforcement with polymeric matrix to enhance the wettability of fibres with matrix. In this way, the bonding among them got increased which supports the tribological, surface, and crystalline behaviour.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to validate an assumption of what to use as an effective (steady state) heat transfer coefficient of thermal conductivity for the honeycomb core sandwiched by Fiberglass face sheets composite. A one-dimensional model based on Fourier law is developed. The results are validated experimentally. Design/methodology/approach The results were obtained from the one-dimensional mathematical model of an overall or effective heat conductivity of the Honeycomb composite panel. These results were validated experimentally by applying heat flux on the specimen under controlled environment. The surface temperatures at different voltages were recorded and analysed. The skin of the sandwich composite material used in the investigation was Fiberglass sheet with a thickness of 0.5 mm at the bottom and 1.0 mm at the top surface. Both skins have a stacking sequence of zero degrees. Due to the presence of air cells in the core (Honeycomb), the model considers the conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer, across the thickness of the panel, combined as an effective conduction mode, whose value may be predicted by using the coefficient of thermal conductivity of the air based on the average temperature difference between the two skins. The experimental results for the heat transfer through the thickness of the panel provide validation of this assumption/prediction. Both infrared thermography and conventional temperature measurement techniques (thermocouples) were used to collect the data. Findings The heat transfer experiment and mathematical modeling were conducted. The data obtained were analyzed, and it was found that the effective thermal conductivity was temperature-dependent as expected. The effective thermal conductivity of the honeycomb panel was close to that of air, and its value could be predicted if the panel surface temperatures were known. It was also found that as temperature raised the variation between experimental and predicted effective air conduction raised up. This is because there was an increase in molecular diffusion and vibration. Therefore, the convection heat transfer increased at high temperatures and the air became an insulator. Originality/value Honeycomb composite panels have excellent physical and thermal properties that influence their performance. This study provides an appropriate method in determining thermal conductivity, which is one of the critical thermal properties of porous composite material. This paper also gives useful and practical data to industries that use or manufacture honeycomb composite panels.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to highlight the direct fabrication of rapid tooling (RT) with desired mechanical, tribological and thermal properties using fused deposition modelling (FDM) process. Further, the review paper demonstrated development procedure of alternative feedstock filament of low-cost composite material for FDM to extend the range of RT applications. Design/methodology/approach The alternative materials for FDM and their processing requirements for fabrication in filament form as reported by various researchers have been summarized. The literature demonstrates the role of various post-processing techniques on surface finish of FDM prints. Further, low-cost materials for feedstock filament have been investigated experimentally to check their adaptability/suitability for commercial FDM setup. The approach was to realize the requirements of FDM (melt flow rate, flexibility, stiffness, glass transition temperature and mechanical strength), necessary for the successful run of an alternative filament. The effect of constituents (additives, plasticizers, surfactants and fillers) in polymeric matrix on mechanical, tribological and thermal properties has been investigated. Findings It is possible to develop composite material feedstock as filament for commercial FDM setup without changing its hardware and software. Surface finish of the parts can further be improved by applying various post-processing techniques. Most of the composite parts have high mechanical strength, hardness, thermal stability, wear resistant and better bond formation than standard material parts. Research limitations/implications Future research may be focused on improving the surface quality of parts fabricated with composite feedstock, solving issues related to the uniform distribution of filled materials during the fabrication of feedstock filament which in turns further increases mechanical strength, high dimensional stability of composite filament and transferring the technology from laboratory scale to various industrial applications. Practical implications Potential applications of direct fabrication with RT includes rapid manufacturing (RM) of metal-filled parts and ceramic-filled parts (which have complex shape and cannot be rapidly made by any other manufacturing techniques) in the field of biomedical and dentistry. Originality/value This new manufacturing methodology is based on the proper selection and processing of various materials and additives to form high-performance, low-cost composite material feedstock filament (which fulfil the necessary requirements of FDM process). Finally, newly developed feedstock filament material has both quantitative and qualitative advantage in RT and RM applications as compared to standard material filament.

This paper introduces an entirely new metal based composite material for direct rapid tooling application using Fused Deposition Modelling rapid prototyping system with desired mechanical and thermal properties and characteristics. The paper specifically describes the results of the dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) of this new metal/polymer composite material, consisting of iron particles in nylon type matrix, for use in FDM process and with the aim of application to direct rapid tooling for injection moulding. The work represents a major development in the direction of direct rapid tooling for reducing the cost and time in tooling manufacture for injection moulding.

Mechanical and thermal properties of composites, consisted of unsaturated polyester resin, reinforced by different kinds of natural materials (Orange peels and Date seeds) and industrial materials (carbon and silica) with particle size 98 µm were studied. Various weight ratios, 5, 10, and 15 wt. % of natural and industrial materials have been infused into polyester. Tensile, three-point bending and thermal conductivity tests were conducted for the unfilled polyester, natural and industrial composite to identify the weight ratio effect on the properties of materials. The results indicated that when the weight ratio for polyester with date seeds increased from 10% to 15%, the maximum Young’s modulus decreased by 54%. When the weight ratio was 5%, the maximum Young’s modulus, yield stress and ultimate tensile stress occurred in the polyester with date seeds. The results of tensile and flexural tests showed that the natural composite material has a higher strength than the industrial material. While the results of flexural tests manifested that the maximum improvement in the flexural strength is obtained for orange peels at 5 wt. %, where the maximum increasing percentage is 153.4% than pure polyester. The thermal conductivity of orange peels decreased to the half value when the weight ratio increased from 10% to 15%. The thermal conductivity for polyester with orange peels was greater than the thermal conductivity of polyester with date seeds with maximum percentage occurred at weight ratio 10% is 14.4%, but the thermal conductivity of the industrial composite material was higher than the natural composite material. Finally, the date seeds composite was a good insulator and it had a reduced heat transfer rate in comparison to the rest of the samples, also the maximum variation of temperature with time occurred in date seeds composite.

The composite material was obtained by chemical vapor deposition growth of carbon nanotubes on the surface of aluminum particles followed by high-temperature compaction under pressure. The content of carbon nanotubes was 1 wt.%. A composite material with a hardness of 58–60 HB, which is two times higher than the hardness of original aluminum with an adjustable thermal conductivity of 50–150 W/(m × K) and with a low density of 2.7 g/cm3 have been obtained. It was found that the hardness and thermal properties could be adjusted depending on the temperature during hot pressing by controlling the formation of Al3C4 carbide.
