Background: Ageing process can cause some changes in body system controlling mechanism. Consequently thyroid hormone levels may show variations reflected by TSH level in elderly people, more so in females. Methods: Serum TSH level were measured in 304 apparently healthy females of Dibrugarh town, Assam. Unbound T3 and T4 were measured if TSH level was abnormal. TSH levels were compared among different age groups. Results: The prevalence of hypothyroidism was found to be 8.2% in premenopausal and 12.7% in postmenopausal women. There were more cases of subclinical hypothyroidism than clinical hypothyroidism. Difference of Mean± SEM of TSH level in these two groups was significant though there was no correlation between age and TSH level. Conclusions: The study reveals decreasing thyroid function in postmenopausal female population of Dibrugarh town.

In recent years, several studies have addressed the issue of positive self-presentation bias in assessing parents involved in postdivorce child custody litigations. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) is widely used in forensic assessments and is able to evaluate positive self-presentation through its Superlative Self-Presentation S scale. We investigated the existence of a gender effect on positive self-presentation bias in an Italian sample of parents involved in court evaluation. Participants were 391 divorced parents who completed the full 567-item Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 during child custody evaluations ordered by several Italian courts between 2006 and 2010. Our analysis considered the S scale along with the basic clinical scales. North-American studies had shown no gender differences in child custody litigations. Differently, our results showed a significantly higher tendency toward “faking-good” profiles on the MMPI-2 among Italian women as compared to men and as compared to the normative Italian female population. Cultural and social factors could account for these differences.

Historically, the research on the right ventricle (RV) has been neglected by his left equivalent because of the complexity of left ventricle (LV) dysfunction. Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) can be classified as linked to primary valve disease or functional in nature, but most are functional. Although it was historically assumed that such functional Tricuspid regurgitation, i.e. arising from leftsided disease, and it can be resolved after corrective surgery, but after successful surgery, on the aortic or mitral valve annular dilatation, the Tricuspid regurgitation and right ventricular dysfunction may persist. To study the circumference of tricuspid orifice and it’s the diameter in two perpendicular planes and its comparison among the male and female population. The material for the present study comprised of 50 formalin fixed human hearts (35 males and 15 females) which were obtained from the department of anatomy. In this study, it is observed that: The mean value of circumference of a tricuspid orifice is 11.01+/-0.63 cm. The diameter of tricuspid orifice along the frontal dimension is 3.06+/-0.38 cm, and the diameter along the sagittal dimension is 2.26+/-0.23 cm. The measurements of the circumference of tricuspid orifice reported for males and females in western countries were higher than the present study and the diameter along the frontal dimension is greater than the diameter along the sagittal dimension. The tricuspid valve diameter along the frontal dimension was more than the diameter along the sagittal dimension in both males and females.

Background: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is one of the leading causes of mortality in Pakistan. With advancement in research, multiple causes have contributed in development of web of causation of this public health issue. The objective of this study was to assess gender differences in risk factors associated with ischemic heart disease in patients presenting at the biggest cardiology hospital of Lahore. Patients and methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was carried out in Punjab Institute of Cardiology, Lahore from January to August, 2018 on a sample of 296 diagnosed patients of IHD, through non-probability consecutive sampling technique. Data was collected on pretested questionnaire. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 22. Chi-Square test of significance was applied and a p-value ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age of participants was 45±12 years with predominance of male patients (71.3%). Frequency of risk factors for IHD included increase body mass index (83.8%), hypertension (61%), insufficient physical activity (43%), diabetes (38.5%) and smoking (23%). Increase serum cholesterol was reported in 95% and triglycerides in 99% of the participants. Gender difference was significant with females residing in urban population (p=0.054) and exercise routine (p=0.034). Males showed high tendency of IHD with smoking pattern (p<0.001) contrary to presence of diabetes in females (p=0.05), hypertension (p=0.054), BMI (p=0.0379) and stressful event in life (p=0.002). Males showed regular intake of medicines (p =0.045) after diagnosis as compared to female population. Conclusion: There is more frequency of ischemic heart disease in males as compared to females. Significant association was observed with residence in urban area, presence of diabetes, hypertension, high BMI and stressful event in life in occurrence of ischemic heart disease in female population.
