In the recent decades, magnesium matrix composites present a plenty of applications to automotive, marine and aerospace industries. In this work, AZ31B is selected as Mg matrix material and hard Tungsten carbide (WC) particles as reinforcement material. Mg/WC composites reinforced with different weight proportions (0, 5, 10 and 15 wt.%) were made through stir casting method. The worn surface of manufactured Mg/WC composites and base Mg material were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The wear test results denoted that the AZ31B/15 wt% WC composites have excellent tribological behaviour when compared to the base magnesium matrix AZ31B alloy. The yield strength, flexural strength, tensile strength and micro-hardness of the manufactured composites are improved by increasing the WC content. SEM images reveal the homogeneous distribution of WC particles throughout the Mg matrix.

Further, SEM analysis revealed the homogeneous distribution of WC particles throughout the Mg matrix.

Abstract In this paper, Hafnium Carbide (HfC) reinforced ZE41 Magnesium Matrix Composites (MMCs) were prepared by using stir casting method. Using three different reinforcement percentages of HfC such as 5%, 10% and 15% by wt., ZE41-HfC MMCs were prepared. The mechanical characteristics of ZE41-HfC MMCs were evaluated by subjecting them to tensile and surface micro-hardness studies. Using X-Ray diffraction (XRD) studies, chemical compounds formed in the interfacial layer between HfC & ZE41 Mg was observed. Using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the surface modifications in the composites due to HfC addition was studied. Using electron backscatter diffraction analysis (EBSD), the changes in particle grain sizes and orientation of ZE41-HfC MMCs were studied. Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis was used to identify the variations in elemental composition of the prepared ZE41-HfC MMCs. ZE41-HfC MMCs were subjected to drilling studies for identifying the variations in cutting forces. Using electrochemical studies, the corrosion resistance of ZE41-HfC MMCs was observed. SEM images of corroded ZE41-HfC MMCs revealed micro cracks and dense pits near HfC agglomerated region.

This paper focuses the Mechanical properties and tribological behaviour of aluminium (6063) metal which are reinforced with silicon carbide and graphite. Different percentages like7 %, 10%, 12% of silicon carbide and 3%, 5%, 8% of Graphite were added for reinforcement. The manufacturing of components is made by using stir casting method. Mechanical properties like (fatigue, impact, micro structure) and wear test are carried out in this paper. The result concluded that there is an increase in the mechanical and tribological properties with increase in weight percentage of reinforcement.

Aluminium metal matrix composites wear characterization is presented in the paper. The LM25 grade aluminium alloy is chosen as matrix material and reinforcements are silicon carbide, zircon and garnet particles. AlMMCs are produced by conventional stir casting method and heat treated before making wear test specimens according to the ASTM G99 standards. The wear behaviour of these composites is studied under laboratory conditions using a pin-on-disc wear test rig. The wear behaviour of these composites is studied under sliding on EN32 steel disc. The influence of reinforcement type, volume fraction, particle size, sliding speed, applied load and sliding distance is analyzed.

Wear behaviour of aluminium matrix composites are characterized by pin on disc wear test using various parameters such as sliding distance, sliding speed and load. MMC consists of aluminium alloy (A356) as the matrix material and particulate alumina of 5% and 10% by weight as the reinforcement was fabricated using stir casting. Wear resistance of composites are improved by the presence of reinforcements. Experiments were conducted based on the plan of experiments generated through Taguchi Technique. L9 orthogonal array was selected for analysis of data. The objective of this investigation is to study the influence of sliding speed, sliding distance, load and weight percentage reinforcement on wear rate of fabricated metal matrix composites.
