Eight sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) genotypes were evaluated during four consecutive 60-day cuttings at two locations in Puerto Rico. Differences between genotypes and cuttings were significant for the eight traits studied (green forage yield, content and yield of dry matter and crude protein, in vitro dry matter digestibility, plant height and leaf area). The location x genotype interaction was significant for most traits except dry matter content and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). At both locations the best dry forage producers over the 240-day period were ATx623 x Rio and ATx623 x TMTx430 with 34 and 30 t/ha, respectively, al Isabela; and 20 and 19 t/ha, respectively at Mayagüez. Average IVDMD and crude protein values of hybrids were 58 and 10.2%, respectively. Rio was lowest in dry forage yield but highest in IVDMD value: 62%. Leaf area had a high positive correlation with the three yield criteria. A rough estimate of net profit from growing forage sorghum in Puerto Rico for milk production is $1,211/ha.

Three of the main problems associated with breeding guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq.), an important tropical forage, are seed shattering; low germination rate; and reproduction, which is by apomixis. Three hybrids were developed at the Tropical Agriculture Research Station (TARS) of the USDA-ARS, from sexual female plants and apomictic selections of guineagrass. In addition, an interspecific hybrid, BPIH104, was made from a cross between Brachiaria purpurascens Raddl and Panicum coloratum L.  The four hybrids, common guineagrass, and Tobiata, an introduction from Brazil, were evaluated at 4-, 6-, and 8-wk cutting intervals (Cl) during one year in a randomized splft-plot design with four replications. Mean dry matter content (DMC), dry matter yield (DMY), crude protein yield (CPY), and plant height (PHt) increased (P < 0.01) from the 4- to the 8-wk Cl, but mean crude protein concentration (CPC) decreased (P < 0.01). In vitro dry mater digestibility (IVDMD) decreased (P < 0.01) only from the 4- to 8-wk Cl. DMC, CPY, and PHt were positively correlated, and CPC and IVDMD negatively correlated, with DMY. At the 8-wk Cl, Tobiata and BPIH104 were the top yielders with annual yields equivalent to 43 and 41 t/ha, respectively. These and the other hybrids deserve further evaluation under grazing management in Puerto Rico.

Maize is the very important silage source in the world. Timely harvesting ensure high maize forage yield and quality. Therefore, the study focused on the effects of four harvesting times (starting at the 12 August every 7 days) on yield and qualitative parameters of forage green mass of maize hybrid ZP 677. The experiment was set in Vojvodina Province, Serbia, during the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons. Plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves per plant, ear percentage, forage yield, dry matter content and crude protein content were higher, while stem percentage was lower in 2014 with favorable climatic condition. Forage yield, crude protein content, ADF and NDF decreased, while dry matter content significantly increased with delay in harvesting. The maize hybrid should be harvested when the milk line is three-quarter of the way down the grain that is in the third decade of August.

The objective was to evaluate the productivity, chemical composition, ruminal degradability of dry matter and digestibility of BRS capiaçu grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) managed at five regrowth ages. A completely randomized design with ten replications was used in the BRS capiaçu elephant grass subjected to five cutting intervals (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 days) in the summer, making a total of 50 plots with a useful area of 4 x 2 m. There were daily increases in the dry matter production in the order of 382 kg ha-1, with 49,859 kg ha-1 being produced at 150 regrowth days. The dry matter content and organic matter linearly increased (P < 0.01) at different regrowth ages. The crude protein content, in vitro dry matter digestibility and in vitro digestibility of neutral detergent fiber linearly reduced (P < 0.01) 0.037%, 0.196% and 0.256% per day, respectively. Potential degradability of dry matter decreased from 68.9% at 30 days to 44.7% at 150 regrowth days (0.194 percentage units per day). The rate of degradation of fraction B 'c' was not modified (P = 0.94), averaging 1.46% hour-1. In the cultivation of BRS capiaçu elephant grass in the summer season, in the northern region of Minas Gerais, the age for harvesting between 90 and 120 days of regrowth is recommended.

Abstract This study evaluated dry matter yield and nutritional characteristics of different oat genotypes (Avena spp.) for ensiling. Treatments consisted of genotypes of white oat IPR 126 (Avena sativa), black oat Cabocla IPR and Agrocoxilha (Avena strigosa), and BRS Madrugada and BRS Centauro (Avena vertis). Oats were harvested at the phenological stage of milk/dough grain. The design was a completely randomized block scheme, with five treatments and three replications per treatment. The IPR Cabocla genotype showed the highest dry matter content (before and after silo opening) and in vitro dry matter digestibility of fresh forage. No differences were observed for in vitro dry matter digestibility and dry matter losses among silages. The highest silage digestible dry matter yield (kg ha-1) was observed for the BRS Centauro genotype. Thus, despite the better nutritional quality presented by the IPR Cabocla genotype before ensiling, BRS Centauro genotype presented a higher yield of digestible dry matter per hectare.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the qualitative parameters and nutritional potential of silage of arboreal cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) shoots. The experiment was carried out in a 4×2 factorial arrangement, for two silage forms (in natura or pre-dried), with four treatments, as follows: without additives (WA); with inoculant (WI); with 2% ground corn (GC); and with 2% ground corn with inoculant (GC+I). The fermentative quality and nutritional parameters of the silages were evaluated. Fermentative quality was better in the WI and GC+I silages. The dry matter content was higher in the pre-dried silage, while the crude protein contents of in natura silage were higher in the WA and WI treatments. The lowest values of neutral detergent fiber and acid-digested lignin were observed in the WI treatment, for pre-dried silage. Total digestible nutrients and total volume of gas were higher in the pre-dried silage, in the WI and GC treatments, respectively. In vitro dry matter digestibility was lower in WA silage, in both forms. Silage of arboreal cotton associated with inoculant or with inoculant with ground corn shows a better fermentation profile and improves the energy and nutritional values, both in natura and pre-dried forms; however, in natura silage is less laborious for rural producers.

Future improvement of forage quality in smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.) and other species will require a knowledge of the chemical and structural factors most limiting to digestibility and intake of dry matter by ruminants. The objective of this study was to estimate direct and indirect effects from path analysis of several forage constituents on in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and forage yield of smooth bromegrass. Six hundred and fifteen spaced plants of B8HD smooth bromegrass were harvested at Arlington, Wis. in June 1982 to assess dry matter yield and forage constituents. Near-infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy was used to estimate IVDMD, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, cellulose, acid detergent hemicellulose, acid detergent lignin, and ash based on a random calibration subset of 75 plants. Five independent variables comprised the path analysis model: crude protein, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and ash. None of the variables directly or indirectly affected forage yield. Lignin and cellulose concentrations had the overwhelmingly largest direct effects on IVDMD, while hemicellulose was important only when expressed as a percentage of the cell wall. Crude protein was important, but only to a small extent, while ash had no effect on IVDMD. The largest indirect effects on IVDMD were generally indirect effects of each character through correlated changes in lignin and indirect effects of lignin through correlated changes in other characters. The large effects of lignin support previous work establishing lignin as the primary factor limiting IVDMD. The importance of cellulose compared to hemicellulose, a result contrary to many current theories on the role of cell walls in rumen digestion, emphasizes at least three factors contributing to differences between this study and previous studies: (1) species differences, (2) genetic vs. species and maturity effects, and (3) analytical procedures. Current evidence suggests a cell wall ideotype should have reduced cellulose and lignin with either reduced or unchanged hemicellulose concentration.Key words: Bromus inermis Leyss., cellulose, hemicellulose, in vitro dry matter digestibility, lignin, forage yield

This study evaluated the nutritional characteristics of hay of nineteen hybrids between sorghum and Sudan grass. The experimental design was a randomized block with nineteen treatments and three replications. The chemical characteristics of the respective hays were analyzed 52 days after sowing and 45 and 49 regrowth days. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance, and when the F test was significant, the treatment means were compared by the Scott and Knott test at 5%. Genotypes 1013026 and 1014020 showed similar dry matter content. As for ether extract content, the highest values ranged from 2.20 to 2.66%. Higher values of minerals were observed in hybrids 1013026 and 1011005. In relation to crude protein, higher content values were reported for hybrids 1013021 and 1013020 (14.59 and 15.47% CP). When evaluating the neutral detergent fiber content, lower values varied between 56.05 and 57.07% for hybrids 1013016 and 1011009. Considering the content of acid detergent fiber, values ranged from 32.70 to 35.78%. Values of dry matter digestibility were higher than 50%. All hybrids provide quality hay, however the hybrid 1014019 showed the best nutritional value.

The aim of this study was to observe the properties of ten maize hybrids from Serbia including agronomic traits, lignocellulosic fibre composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility. Five yellow kernel dent hybrids and five analogue red kernel hybrids were used in this study to evaluate the agronomic traits, dry matter content of the whole plant, lignocellulosic fibre composition, ratios between different fibres, in vitro dry matter and NDF digestibility. Correlation coefficients between the investigated traits of the maize hybrids were assessed. Even though the results of our study showed variations regarding nutritional composition of the whole maize plant between the investigated maize hybrids, the hybrid and the differences in kernel colour (yellow or red) did not considerably affect the properties that influence quality of the maize hybrids for silage production. The highest IVDMD was determined in yellow kernel hybrid ZP 388, while the maximum NDFD was detected in the red kernel hybrid ZP 606red which also showed the lowest ADL/NDF and ADF/NDF ratios. The results indicate that all of the hybrids used in this study are good candidates for the production of high-quality silage for ruminant nutrition.

Agronomic studies on marrowstem kale (Brassica oleracea L.), consisting of seven seeding and five harvest dates in one trial, two seeding methods and nine seeding rates in another, and five silages in another, were conducted for up to 3 years. Data were collected on dry matter yield and several yield and quality components. Delaying the date of seeding reduced yields in the autumn but the converse held for delaying the date of autumn harvest. Similar results were obtained with dry matter content and plant height. Medium to high seeding rates in broadcast stands produced the highest yields for early pasture; light seeding rates in rows yielded the highest for late pasture. Leaves constituted 55% of the pasture herbage in the early harvest and 25% in the late harvest. Height, stem diameter, and plant weights were higher in the row compared with the broadcast method and at the lighter seeding rates. The in vitro digestible dry matter and crude protein content of kale was superior to the other silage crops and kale appeared promising in a kale–corn combination.
