The phenomenon of sexual harassment in an educational setup has been an unpinned topic. With more than 47% of the teaching staff in educational institutions females, the situation is getting worst on the esteem and honour of the profession. The nobles of the profession are on the target of harassment by none other than their own students. This paper explores particular type of sexual harassment in an attempt to understand and apprehend the essence, meanings and elements of the sexual harassment caused by male students towards their female teachers in a formal education environment. The research strategy is based on interpretive consumer research, with influences from phenomenology. The main research data was generated by face-to-face interviews from five female secondary and higher secondary teacher about their experiences of facing sexually harassing behaviours in the course of class and school. This study theoretically contributes by exploring the breadth of the issue faced by teachers and explored the defining terms, elements, reasons and responses and measure taken by the interviewed teachers.

This article attempts to unravel the failure of Arabic learning in formal education institutions and tries to offer alternative solutions. The failure of formal education institutions in learning Arabic is mostly due to the lack of clarity in the vision of the policy makers on the position and significance of Arabic materials. This is reflected in the policy regarding the frequency of face-to-face learning, qualificat-ions of teaching staff, preparation of textbooks, and the position of Arabic language materials which are still not included in the category of national examination materials. The success of Assunniyyah Islamic Boarding School in Kencong Jember in learning Arabic is because they are able to present bī’ah ‘Arabīyah (Arabic milieu) in the pesantren, even though they use ta’zīr as one of their approaches. Formal education institutions are less successful, or even fail in learning Arabic because they fail to present bī’ah ‘Arabīyah in their neighborhood. There are many points that need to be addressed in the context of designing Arabic learning in the formal education environment, both related to the creation of the environment, teacher qualifications and standardization of textbooks as learning resources, or related to the position of Arabic as material that adequately deter-mines student graduation.

In Hong Kong, males constituted only about 10.2% of the nursing workforce in 2010. The learning experiences of male nursing students in Hong Kong during their clinical practicum have rarely been explored. If these students cannot maintain their psychological well-being and psychological health in formal education and clinical placements, then their physical health will also suffer. This ethnographic qualitative study gave male nursing students in Hong Kong a chance to voice their experiences during their clinical practicum. Selected through snowball sampling, 18 male nursing students from a local university participated in individual face-to-face semistructured interviews. The data were processed with content analysis. The findings indicated that male students not only received more support and understanding from male rather than female members of staff but endured a certain amount of oppression while working in female wards. According to the students’ comments on nursing culture, the work climate of male nursing students could be improved by reorganizing the clinical placements and providing extra support to male nursing students.

Student satisfaction, as a key psychological-affective outcome of tertiary education, is a direct measure of the success of Open Distance Learning (ODL). It is therefore vital for ODL Higher Education Institutions to assess and improve student satisfaction constantly. Existing theories on student satisfaction are mostly derived from deductive research, i.e. from research that considers the existing body of knowledge, followed by an investigation of a specific aspect or component, in order to reach a specific conclusion. We, however, maintain the inductive stance that a research framework for student satisfaction in ODL should be derived from students themselves. Accordingly, we purposively collected qualitative data from N=34 South African postgraduate ODL students, representative of various cultural language groups, with regard to student satisfaction. Supported by Atlas.ti, we composed an integrated dataset comprised of students’ responses to two focus-group interviews, as well as students’ written narratives in response to qualitative questions. Through meticulous qualitative data-analysis, we detected data categories, sub-categories, patterns and regularities in the integrated dataset. Theories and findings from the existing corpus of knowledge pertaining to student satisfaction in ODL illuminated our qualitative findings. This paper reports on the knowledge we gained from our participants pertaining to their student satisfaction with the Higher Education (HE) environment, the first of three main research components of an inductively derived research framework for student satisfaction in ODL.

Abstract Introduction The main research objective is the analysis of the grouping of the students of the University of Ljubljana, with respect to the intensity of different types of exercise participation motives, their gender, discipline and year of study, level of physical activity, status of physical education class, organization of physical activities during study, and place of residence. Methods Data were collected using personal data sheets during enrolling students at the University of Ljubljana. Students completed The Exercise Motivations Inventory (EMI-2), with additional data about sociodemographic parameters. Results The results reveal that the students could be grouped in three distinctive clusters, which can be very clearly explained in terms of the prevalence of exercise participation motives in general. The students grouped in the first cluster have the lowest average values (means) in all exercise participation motives. The students grouped in the second cluster have the profile with moderate means in all exercise participation motives, while the students grouped in the third cluster have the profile with the highest means in all exercise participation motives. Conclusions The results indicate overall higher motivation for physical activity in men. All the sub-samples are different in their relevant features used in clustering (e.g., male students are dominant in life sciences, etc.), which provide a guide both for the explanation of the results obtained and for practical implications.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore senses of powerlessness and empowerment among Romani in Ukraine in relation to such social circles as the extended family, the Romani local community and the whole Ukrainian society. The main research interest is focused on situations and factors that make people feel powerless or empowered. Design/methodology/approach The study was conducted using a semi-structured interview method via telephone. Romani NGO experts approved the interview content. Trained Roma-facilitators were interviewers. Every interview was transcribed for further thematic analysis. Findings The most prominent empowerment factors for Romani people are located within their families and local communities, while the bigger society (Ukrainians themselves and Ukrainian public institutions) is a main source of powerlessness. At the same time, the rigid role of family and community expectations is seen as detrimental for both males and females. Originality/value The paper is original in terms of its topic (senses of powerlessness and empowerment among Romani in Ukraine as social determinants of mental well-being) and research strategy (engagement of Roma-facilitators as interviewers).

This article describes the research results aimed at distance education during the Covid-19 pandemic and closing schools and its symmetry with the classical state in terms of time, difficulty, and the mental and physical condition of students. An important aspect is therefore to maintain the symmetry of attitudes to teaching in face-to-face form and distance form. In terms of the eight-year gymnasium in the Czech Republic, students’ attitudes to the teaching subject informatics were investigated. The main research questions in our study dealt with whether students felt equally balanced regarding the amount of tasks and time taken for home preparation during the Covid-19 outbreak compared with the time before the quarantine and their condition (both mental and physical) during the Covid-19 outbreak. The research was conducted using an anonymous questionnaire, which was answered by 110 out of 180 students. According to the results, it is evident that students felt that during the distance education, there are more tasks compared to face-to-face ones. Students also claimed to spend more time learning at distance education than at school. On the other hand, they agreed that the self-education schedule is suitable for them. In terms of the questionnaire, their condition (both mental and physical) was also evaluated, which was slightly above the average.

One of the basic mediums in the interaction between doctor and patient in the treatment room is language. This paper, hence deals with the conversation in doctor-patients interaction in Pirngadi General Hospital in Medan, Indonesia. Clauses in the conversations were adopted as the main research data. The analysis is based on the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics pioneered by Halliday (2004). The research was conducted by applying top-down approach from the analysis of the consultation in terms of context of situation that is concerned with register variables covering field, tenor and mode. Then, the analysis further focuses on the experiential function in terms of transitivity system covering the analysis of the processes used the participant functions involved and the interpersonal function covering mood and modality. The study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method with triangulation. It refers to the use of multiple methods or data sources in qualitative research to develop a comprehensive understanding of phenomena. Triangulation is viewed as a qualitative research strategy to test validity through the convergence of information from different sources. The results of the analysis have revealed that social relation exists in the language used by the doctor and the patient in their interaction in which the doctor has more power over the patient.

The article deals with the topical issue of digitalization of education as a component of the digital transformation of contemporary society and the economy in general. The purpose of the research is to identify the readiness status of teaching staff for professional activity in the context of the digitalization of education. The main research methods were the questionnaire (implemented in the form of an online survey among students of the extramural form of study of the Moscow City Pedagogical University working at educational institutions of Moscow), and statistical analysis of the data obtained. The results of an online survey of teachers allowed concluding that today teachers have acquired a positive experience in the use of recommended tested digital educational resources, the ability to develop innovative digital educational and methodological support for the educational process, as well as recognized the need to build a personal trajectory of professional development in the framework of digital education.

In order to make its orientation of University of Applied Science (UAS) a success, INES is required to operate a complete shift in the philosophy and methodology of providing its educational services. One of the suitable methodologies for UAS is the Problem Based Learning (PBL). Despite various trainings on the matter and verbal encouragements from the top leaders, PBL is still not officially adopted and/or systematically practiced at INES. Besides, up to this date, no explicit strategic moves were adopted to ensure consistent and systematic implementation of PBL approach. This paper aims at laying the foundation to an action research geared towards developing strategic priorities for effective implementation of PBL in INES context. A pure qualitative approach was used. Data were collected from a sample of purposively selected students representatives and Deans of Faculties, using brainstorming technique. Identified strengths of INES include the leadership will regarding implementation of applied Science orientation, systematization of field visits, existence of adequate infrastructure, many young teaching staff etc. The fact that PBL is not applied in any other private university, labor market situation and needs, existence of innovative development programs at the country level were some identified opportunities. Challenges identified include lack of financial means, low level of English, staff turnover and many students who likely do not know what they exactly want. Three strategic goals namely (1) INES curricula are adapted to PBL, (2) the teaching, learning and assessment practices are aligned to PBL and/or its variants’ requirements, and (3) staff experience and competences are sustained as well as some specific strategic actions were proposed for implementing PBL in INES context. The paper ends recognizing that there is need to further the research using action research strategy in order to come up with generalizable and validated strategic priorities
