This study sought to establish the availability of ICT facilities and teachers competence in the use of ICT among public secondary schools in Ngara, Tanzania. The study employed a mixed research approach in that interview schedule and questionnaire were employed as sources of data. The population of the study was 525 stakeholders from 31 secondary schools, including the DEO, the WEO, the Heads of schools, ICT manager and teachers. Simple random sampling and purposive sampling were used to determine the sample of 84 respondents from four randomly selected schools. Qualitative data was analyzed based on themes while quantitative data was analyzed descriptively. The study revealed that the schools faced non availability of ICT facilities and internet connection. They also faced limited electricity supply and limited funds for maintenance of facilities. Furthermore, a significant number of teachers did not have competence in any of the aspects of computer. Very few could use internet while another few had some competence in hardware and programming. Therefore, it was recommended that the government and other education stakeholders should organize for seminars and workshop for capacity building so that teachers may gain knowledge and competence in the use of ICT facilities. The Ministry of Education should allocate funds for buying ICT facilities and devices and for maintenances.

The purpose of this study was to establish the effect of pupils’ family backgrounds on their transition rates from public primary schools to secondary schools in Kenya’s Soin/Sigowet Sub-County. The study adopted mixed methods approach and the research design employed was descriptive survey. It targeted a population of 76 headteachers and 715 teachers from which a sample of 63 headteachers and 250 teachers was used. Clustered random sampling was used to obtain the 63 schools from their zones, simple random sampling to select teachers and purposive sampling on headteachers. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data from teachers and interview schedule from headteachers. The two instruments were validated, piloted and a reliable 0.75 Cronbach’s coefficient alpha applied. Quantitative data was analysed and presented in frequencies and percentages, while qualitative data was described alongside the quantitative data. The key findings of this study were: educated parents provided moral and material support to their children, occupation of parents determined their financial ability to educate their children and parental involvement played a crucial role in the performance and progress of their children in education. The study revealed that family challenges which included homelessness, hunger, domestic violence and drug abuse affected the transition of pupils from public primary to secondary schools. The study recommended that education stakeholders in the Sub-County should sensitize parents on the importance of ensuring children proceed from one level of education to another. On further research, the study recommended that the research needed to be replicated in other parts of the country by varying its approach.

This study sought to explore the influence of professional growth opportunities on the job performance of deputy principals of public secondary schools in Lugari Sub-County, Kenya. Adopting the descriptive research design, the study utilised mixed methods approach engaging both questionnaires and interview guide. The focus population for the study included 28 principals, 28 deputy principals and 420 teachers of public secondary schools within Lugari Sub- County. All the 28 principals and 28 deputy principals were purposively sampled for study whereas, 200 teachers were identified for study by simple random sampling technique. A pilot test-retest study was conducted in three public secondary schools from nearby Uasin Gishu County and a reliable Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.79 and 0.81 was obtained for the deputy principal response questionnaire and teacher response questionnaire, respectively. Supervisors and researchers from Mount Kenya University School of education were engaged to ascertain the validity of the research instruments and necessary adjustments effected on the tools before use. The questionnaires gathered quantitative data from teachers and deputy principals whilst the interview guide assembled qualitative data from the principals. The statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23.0 was used for the analysis of quantitative data yielding frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviation. Qualitative data were analysed thematically based on the objectives and presented along with the quantitative data. The findings established that schools in Lugari Sub County hardly support deputy principals for in-service training, the majority of deputy principals perceived unfairness in promotion procedures and that the position of deputy principal did not adequately prepare deputy principals for principal-ship. The study recommends that deputy principals need to be supported by the school management to collaborate and improve their requisite skills to discharge their duties effectively.

This study sought to investigate on the roles of parents in enhancing children’s academic performance among Public Secondary Schools at Nyamagana District, Tanzania. The study employed the mixed research approach to organize the qualitative and quantitative data so as to deal with the research problem. The sample for this study included 88 students whereby Simple random sampling was used to select them. Purposive sampling was used to select the DEO, WEO and some teachers while parents were selected through convenient sampling. Data was gathered through questionnaire and interview schedule. The instruments were validated by two research experts from Saint Augustine University of Tanzania. The study concludes that parents are somehow not doing very well on the issue of parenting as a good number of them did not play their role effectively. Parental role in communication with teachers was done well as a good number of parents rarely or never communicated with teachers to make follow ups regarding their children’s education. The rate of parents’ volunteering in school development activities was very low and the rate of parental participation in supervision of students’ learning at home was very minimal. However, parents participated in decision making regarding school related activities. Finally, parents were not doing well on issues related to community participation. Based on the conclusions, it is recommended that since the rate of parental participation in enhancing children’s academic performance is low, school authorities need to organize for seminars and workshops to parents on the importance of their participation in school related programs that enhance the academic performance of their children.

This study examined the extent at which informal manufacturers’ access Business Development Services (BDS). The study inquired about the extent of access and constraints to such access. The study was carried out in Dar es Salaam and mixed methods approach was used to study the phenomena. Using purposive and simple random sampling, researchers used a sample of 150 respondents from among manufactures and officials from different organizations. Data were collected by the use of questionnaire, interviews and documentary review. The descriptive statistics performed through SPSS were used in analysing quantitative data while content analysis run through MAXQDA10 was used to analyse qualitative data. Because the study was built on the contention that Business Development Services help in improving the performance of businesses, findings revealed that there is limited access to Business Development Services by urban informal manufactures in terms of training, financial assistance, legal related assistance and technical assistance among others which hinder their growth. The sluggish access to these services was caused by financial, information, technical, legislative, cultural and capacity related constraints. The study urged the government and its related organizations to value small start-ups by giving them all their necessary attention if they want the country to be more of an industrialized one. Business Development Services should be extended to these ventures bearing in mind that it is from these informal start-ups that disruptive industries emerge. Thus continuous trainings, financial and technical assistance should be given greater priority to urban informal manufacturers.
