This study sought to explore the influence of professional growth opportunities on the job performance of deputy principals of public secondary schools in Lugari Sub-County, Kenya. Adopting the descriptive research design, the study utilised mixed methods approach engaging both questionnaires and interview guide. The focus population for the study included 28 principals, 28 deputy principals and 420 teachers of public secondary schools within Lugari Sub- County. All the 28 principals and 28 deputy principals were purposively sampled for study whereas, 200 teachers were identified for study by simple random sampling technique. A pilot test-retest study was conducted in three public secondary schools from nearby Uasin Gishu County and a reliable Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.79 and 0.81 was obtained for the deputy principal response questionnaire and teacher response questionnaire, respectively. Supervisors and researchers from Mount Kenya University School of education were engaged to ascertain the validity of the research instruments and necessary adjustments effected on the tools before use. The questionnaires gathered quantitative data from teachers and deputy principals whilst the interview guide assembled qualitative data from the principals. The statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23.0 was used for the analysis of quantitative data yielding frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviation. Qualitative data were analysed thematically based on the objectives and presented along with the quantitative data. The findings established that schools in Lugari Sub County hardly support deputy principals for in-service training, the majority of deputy principals perceived unfairness in promotion procedures and that the position of deputy principal did not adequately prepare deputy principals for principal-ship. The study recommends that deputy principals need to be supported by the school management to collaborate and improve their requisite skills to discharge their duties effectively.

The purpose of the study was to establish the effects of teachers’ collegiality on learners’ academic performance in public secondary schools of Baringo North Sub-County, Kenya. The study employed mixed methods approach which utilized questionnaires and interview schedules. It adopted a descriptive research design in carrying out the study. The target population comprised 27 principals and 216 teachers in the 27 public secondary schools of Baringo North Sub County. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 138 teachers while 24 principals were purposively selected. From these populations, two schools were selected to pilot the research tools where a reliable Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.77 was obtained upon computation. Validity of the research instruments was carried out by the University supervisor and necessary revision done. Questionnaires were used to collect quantitative data from teachers while interview schedule was used to collect qualitative data from principals. Quantitative data were analysed to obtain means, percentages, and standard deviation. Qualitative data on the other hand were analysed and presented thematically alongside the quantitative data. Inferential statistics were run to test the null hypothesis using Pearson’s Linear Correlation Coefficient. The findings established that teachers’ collegiality influences learners’ KCSE academic performance in public secondary schools of Baringo North Sub-County. However, there was a weak positive correlation between teachers’ collegiality and learners’ academic performance. It also established that though collegiality was not fully practiced there was a strong synergy among teachers to improve learners’ performance. The study recommends that teachers need to be supported by headteachers to collaborate to offer the best services to their learners and create more meaningful work. School headteachers should enhance teamwork among teachers to perform their best and staff members should meet or interact regularly, share ideas and expertise to attain higher performance.

This study sought to establish the relationship between boards of governors' (BOGs) roles and management of government aided secondary schools in Kyenjojo District. The objectives were to establish the relationship between BOGs' planning role and management of government aided secondary schools, to establish the relationship between BOGs' supervisory role and management of government aided secondary schools, to establish the relationship between BOGs' control role and management of government aided secondary schools; and to determine the major predictor of management of government aided secondary schools out of the three aspects of BOGs' roles. A correlational research design was used. A total of 90 respondents drawn from 108 BOGs and nine head teachers were selected as sample for the study using stratified random sampling and census inquiry respectively. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview guide. Quantitative data was analysed using Pearson product-moment correlation and regression, while thematic analysis was used on qualitative data. The study found a statistically moderate positive and significant relationship between BOGs' planning role and management of government aided secondary schools (r=.626, p=.000); a statistically moderate positive and significant relationship between BOGs' supervisory role and management of government aided secondary schools(r=.591, p=.000); and a statistically weak positive and significant relationship between BOGs' control role and management of government aided secondary schools(r=.280, p=.015). All the three aspects of BOGs roles account for 38.4% of the influence on management of government aided secondary schools in Kyenjojo district (adjusted r2=0.384, p=.000). The researchers recommend that BOGs should be well trained in management of schools in order to be effective in their work. Head teachers should not be dictators but create a conducive climate for planning, supervision and control by the BOGs.

The purpose of the study was to determine how Bukusu Male Circumcision Songs Metaphor have affected the Education of the Boy Child among the Bukusu Community in Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya.. The study was guided by the following objectives: To establish the importance of Luhya male Circumcision songs metaphor among the Bukusu community, to establish the effect of Luhya Male Circumcision songs metaphor on the behavioral development of the Bukusu youth. To determine how Bukusu male circumcision songs metaphor have affected the Education of the Boy child among the Bukusu Community in Trans-Nzoia County.. The researcheradopted mixed research design whereby mixed research method utilizes both qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data was collected using open ended questionnaires while quantitative data collection method included closed ended questioners. The study was done in Trans-NzoiaCounty. The study targeted a total population of 2000 youths from 10 locations. Simple Random sampling procedure was employed. Stratified sampling technique was also used. The scope was limited to youths in Trans-Nzoia County. The study made use of questioners and interview guide. Validity of the instruments was established through pilot testing while reliability was established from consistency of the results obtained from the field. In chapter two empirical literatures was done on independent variable, dependent variable, and the four indicators of independent variable.. It also revealed that the circumcision songs metaphor affects the education of the boy child greatly and as a result it also affects the behavioral development of the youth immorally. In conclusion this therefore calls for the Bukusu community this songs metaphor in such a way that the messages they carry be moral and educative to boy child.

This paper examines the effect of a company's innovation orientation culture on employee turnover among selected non-governmental organizations in Samburu, Kenya. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 78 NGOs operating in Samburu County for the analysis, the study population comprised 11 senior management teams, 14 technical teams and 78 junior staff in 24 selected and active NGOs in Samburu. The analysis gathered both qualitative and quantitative data. A structured questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data and an interview guide was used to collect qualitative data. Thematic data analysis was used to interpret qualitative data, which included common terms, phrases, themes, and patterns. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics which includes frequencies, means, and standard deviation. Findings Results showed that innovation orientation is positively correlated with employee turnover (r=0.375, P=0.01). This supports Chow et al’s (2001) study which revealed that innovation orientation as part of an organization's culture has a significant effect on employee turnover. This study also discovered that an innovation orientation culture embedded in an NGO's ideology will help to reduce turnover because workers feel valued when their work is recognized for creativity and innovation.

This study employed the explanatory sequential mixed-methods design to assess the effectiveness of PLCs in Ghanaian basic schools. Using proportional stratified random sampling technique, the study selected 650 respondents (400 teachers and 250 headteachers) from the basic schools in five regions of Ghana for the quantitative phase of the study. Subsequently, 30 teachers and 10 headteachers from these schools were sampled purposely for the qualitative phase of the study. An adapted version of PLACA-R (6-dimensions; α = .84-.92) from Olivier and Hipp (2010) was used to collect quantitative data whilst researchers designed an interview guide was used to gather qualitative data. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive (means and standard deviation) statistics whilst the qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The study established the level of PLC activities in the basic schools is low on all the 6 dimensions of the scale except shared and supportive leadership. A good number of the basic schools have never held any PLC meetings since the curriculum was introduced. Schools that observed PLC meetings often ignore the delivery methods in the PLC manual. The study also found that female teachers practice PLC more than male teachers. The study further established that age, educational qualification and years of experience have a significant impact on the practice of PLC. The study concluded that teachers and headteachers in the basic schools lack knowledge and pedagogical skills about PLCs and their roles in the professional development of the teachers. It was recommended that the participation of PLCs by teachers and Headteachers should be used as one of the tools for teacher promotion.

Community Health Fund (CHF) was established in 1996 as a District Council based pre-payment health insurance scheme in Tanzania with the aim of improving health of communities working in the informal sectors. However, since its formulation, it has been performing unsatisfactorily, and hence majority of Households (HHs) are not members while other members are withdrawing from the scheme. This necessitated the need for assessing the contribution of CHF on social health security among members. Specifically, this paper examined the challenges faced by households regarding CHF membership and analysed the contributions of CHF on its member. The study area was Kalambo District Council. A cross-sectional research design was used, whereas a simple random sampling technique through lottery method was employed to select the sample size of 354 respondents. Qualitative data were collected using Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), while quantitative data were collected using a questionnaire. Quantitative data were coded and analysed using IBM-SPSS. Qualitative data were analysed through content analysis. The results show that CHF contributed to social health security among its members in the study area, through provision of health services to its members once they fall sick. On other hand, CHF had few members as only 24.3% of HHs had membership to CHF. One of the barriers for CHF was lack of awareness among communities about the existence of CHF, while other cited lack of money for contributing to CHF. Thus, the study concludes that CHF has not contributed significantly to the health security among targeted members. The study recommends that, CHF officials should widely sensitize communities through seminars and meetings about CHF and its benefits to them. Furthermore, CHF stakeholders should coordinate communities in the area to establish financial institutions such as Village Community Banks (VICOBA) where they can save and borrow money for registration cards.

This study sought to establish the availability of ICT facilities and teachers competence in the use of ICT among public secondary schools in Ngara, Tanzania. The study employed a mixed research approach in that interview schedule and questionnaire were employed as sources of data. The population of the study was 525 stakeholders from 31 secondary schools, including the DEO, the WEO, the Heads of schools, ICT manager and teachers. Simple random sampling and purposive sampling were used to determine the sample of 84 respondents from four randomly selected schools. Qualitative data was analyzed based on themes while quantitative data was analyzed descriptively. The study revealed that the schools faced non availability of ICT facilities and internet connection. They also faced limited electricity supply and limited funds for maintenance of facilities. Furthermore, a significant number of teachers did not have competence in any of the aspects of computer. Very few could use internet while another few had some competence in hardware and programming. Therefore, it was recommended that the government and other education stakeholders should organize for seminars and workshop for capacity building so that teachers may gain knowledge and competence in the use of ICT facilities. The Ministry of Education should allocate funds for buying ICT facilities and devices and for maintenances.

The study investigated the effect of head teachers’ supervisory styles and teachers’ job performance in public basic schools in the Mankessim Education Circuit of the Mfantseman Municipality in the Central Region of Ghana. A descriptive survey in the form of mixed methods was used for the study. Through purposive and stratified sampling techniques, 134 respondents made up of 16 head teachers, and 118 teachers were selected and engaged in the study. Two sets of questionnaires, one each for head teachers and teachers were used to collect quantitative data. Qualitative data were obtained through a semi-structured interview guide from 10 respondents (headteacher and teachers) who were conveniently sampled. Means, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression were used to analyze the quantitative data while content analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data. The study revealed that head teachers used directive control supervisory style most frequently as compared to collaborative, directive informational, and non-directive supervisory styles. Generally, teachers’ job performance was very good. Besides, the study discovered that head teachers’ supervisory styles were good predictors of teachers’ job performance. It was concluded that supervisory styles of head teachers were essential factors that influenced teachers’ job performance in schools. Among the recommendations is that in-service training in the form of workshops and seminars should be organized for both head teachers and teachers on the need for effective supervision in public basic schools in the Circuit to achieve school and educational goals.

This article reports on a study that was carried out to establish determinants of ICT integration in mathematics teaching and learning. This paper focuses on the kind of support teachers require to effectively use ICT in teaching mathematics. An exploratory sequential mixed methods research design was employed to conduct this study in which quantitative data was initially collected in the first phase. Qualitative data was then collected in the second phase to explain the quantitative data collected in the initial phase. The study targeted all the teachers teaching in lower grades in both private and public schools. A sample size of 40 lower primary schools were purposively selected based on the availability of ICT tools for instructional purposes in those schools. Three teachers teaching in grade one, two and three were then selected using simple random sampling technique especially in cases where more than three teachers existed. Teacher Questionnaire, Teacher Interview Protocol and Observation Protocol were used to collect data. Data was analyzed qualitatively using descriptive phenomenological analysis in which data transcriptions were divided into themes and sub-themes related to phenomena under study. The findings of the study revealed that there was a significant relationship between supporting teachers’ use of ICT in the classroom and their actual use of ICT in teaching mathematics. The study findings however revealed that teachers teaching lower grades in Mombasa, Kenya were not adequately supported in their use of ICT in teaching mathematics. It was recommended that teachers must be granted adequate support in their use of ICT in teaching mathematics.

Head of a village election with e-voting system is a new thing for community The success level of e-voting system can be reached by fulfil several principles in order to the implementation going effective and the result of the election can be accepted by all. The objectives of this research is to analyze the relation between the success level of e-voting system with social capital of the community. This research is carried out with the quantitative approach and supported by qualitative data. This research takes 60 respondents using simple random sampling technique. The results showed that the success level of e-voting has a correlation with the level of social capital of the community. Based on the field study, the social capital of the community is classified as high. The high social capital makes the implementation of e-voting successful and the success level is also high, because in the election ten years ago occurred a conflict. The community considers e-voting easier and more practical, cost effective and time-saving, and the results of e-voting are also reliable. A practical and fast of e-voting system can be a solution especially for “rural-urban” community who are busy or work outside the village.Keywords: E-voting, the success level of the system, social capital Pemilihan kepala desa dengan sistem e-voting merupakan hal yang baru bagi masyarakat. Keberhasilan penerapan sistem e-voting dilihat dari terpenuhinya beberapa prinsip agar penerapannya berlangsung efektif dan hasilnya dapat diterima oleh seluruh masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hubungan tingkat keberhasilan sistem e-voting dalam pemilihan kepala desa dengan tingkat modal sosial masyarakat. Bentuk penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif yang didukung oleh analisis data kualitatif. Penelitian ini mengambil enam puluh responden dengan teknik simple random sampling. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat keberhasilan e-voting memiliki hubungan dengan tingkat modal sosial masyarakat. Berdasarkan kajian di lapang, modal sosial masyarakat tergolong tinggi. Tingginya modal sosial tersebut membuat pelaksanaan e-voting berhasil dan tingkat keberhasilannya juga tergolong tinggi karena pada pemilihan sepuluh tahun silam sempat terjadi konflik. Masyarakat menganggap sistem evoting lebih mudah dan praktis, hemat dalam segi biaya dan waktu, serta hasil dari pemilihan juga dapat dipertanggungjawabkan. Sistem e-voting yang praktis dan cepat dapat menjadi solusi khususnya bagi masyarakat daerah “desa-kota” yang memiliki kesibukan atau pekerjaan di luar desa.Kata Kunci: E-voting, keberhasilan sistem, modal sosial.
