This piece recounts personal changes I underwent while collecting data for my dissertation. Stemming from my own personal experiences of anomie and feelings of not belonging to the languages and cultures of either Canada or Israel , this inquiry examined the collusion of my attitudes with the attitudes of advanced Hebrew learners of diverse backgrounds and beliefs in a Canadian undergraduate university class. As the themes of claims and ownership of the Hebrew language emerged between clashing sub-groups in the classroom, I examined my own biases and stereotypes regarding language, and ultimately grew into a peaceful acceptance of my position between languages and cultures.

В статье рассматривается результат исследования динамики личностного роста курсантов ведомственного вуза, а также необходимость изучения данной проблемы в рамках подготовки кадров для Федеральной службы исполнения наказаний. Анализируются исторические этапы формирования термина «личностный рост». Рассматриваются различные подходы к содержанию понятия. Дается современная интерпретация понятия «личностный рост». Определено, что профессиональный личностный рост курсанта вуза ФСИН России представляет собой динамический процесс профессионального становления. В статье описывается проведенное лонгитюдное исследование курсантов Академии ФСИН России. В исследовании использовался Многоуровневый личностный опросник (МЛО). Анализ полученных данных позволил прийти к выводу, что личностные изменения курсантов являются, с одной стороны, результатом взросления, которому способствуют условия обучения в вузе ФСИН России, а с другой стороны, результатом профессионального становления (освоение своей новой социальной роли). Также анализировались отдельные стимулы методики. В результате анализа было выявлено, что личностные изменения, происходящие с некоторыми курсантами в процессе обучения в специализированном вузе, носят негативный характер и схожи по симптоматике с синдромом «эмоционального выгорания». The article discusses the results of the study of the dynamics of personal growth of students of a departmental university, as well as the need to study this problem in the framework of training personnel for the Federal Penitentiary System. The historical stages of the formation of the term «personal growth» are analyzed. Various approaches to the content of the concept are considered. A modern interpretation of the concept of «Personal growth» is given. It is determined that the professional personal growth of a cadet of a departmental university of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia is a dynamic process of professional development. The article analyzes the statistics of the expelled cadets for 2017-2020, which may be a consequence of the lack of dynamics of personal growth. The article describes a longitudinal study of cadets of the Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in Ryazan. The study used a multi-level personal questionnaire. In the course of the study, data were obtained, the analysis of which can lead to the conclusion that the personal changes that occur in cadets are, on the one hand, the result of growing up, which is facilitated by the conditions of education in the departmental university of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, and, on the other hand, the result of professional formation (mastering their new social role). Individual stimuli of the methodology were also analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed that the personal changes that occur with some cadets in the course of training at a specialized university are negative in nature and are similar in symptoms to the «emotional burnout syndrome»

In the article an issue is raised on methodology of forming competency in a future psychologist on the basis of adequate understanding of wholeness of the psychic; comparison of academic and psychodynamic approaches to the problem of academic training of a psychologist is done as well as analysis of the leading sects in psychology relevant to psychodynamic approach. There were introduced main positions of psychodynamic theory, which are accordant with orthodox psychoanalysis in the same way as the principles of psyche in its integrity. Content of the given article stresses the importance of taking into account interconnections between the spheres of the conscious and the unconscious in their integrity and functional asymmetry in deep psychocorrection of the future psychologists. Researches are also directed to an issue of statics and dynamics of organization of the psychical in the integrity of its functioning. Researches convince of the need to ensure a holistic approach to improvement of the training of applied psychologists. The psychodynamic theory integrates seamlessly into the general training programme for psychologists, expands the horizons of personal growth, development of reflective intelligence and sensitivity of a future expert. All this greatly complements a format of academic training of psychologists in its orientation to mastering the standard knowledge. Moreover, the passage of deep correction catalyses personal changes towards the harmonization of the psyche structure, development of those characteristics of a person that are desirable for the formation of professional excellence and ensuring the effectiveness of psychological counselling.

ABSTRACT Taxation principles were applied as early as 4000 BC in Sumer. The formulation of recognized taxation principles commenced formally with Adam Smith in 1776. He called them the four maxims of taxation. The principles formulated by Smith were grounded in his observations and personal experiences of the world. After Smith, several individuals, committees, and reviews added their ideas to the principles of taxation. The question discussed in this paper is whether these principles formulated through the years are scientifically grounded. In order to ground the principles scientifically, three qualitative research methods were conducted. Method 1 is a thematic analysis of taxation history. Method 2 applies a qualitative research design called an Interactive Qualitative Analysis. Finally, Method 3 uses a single question in writing, sent to taxation experts from various countries. The question asked in Methods 2 and 3 is: What are the fundamental principles of taxation that are essential to taxation internationally as a discipline? The findings of the three research methods were triangulated in order to propose a set of six fundamental principles of taxation. The six proposed principles are: efficient and effective administration and communication; certain, neutral, understandable legislation; equity influencing different levels of society; taxpayers' duty to contribute to society versus the government's duty to strike a balance between taking too little and taking too much; benefits to the public through taxation; and change unwanted social behavior. The goal of the project was to gain an understanding of the relationships between secondary school youth experiences in school gardens and their mental well-being. Over the course of five months, sixteen youths participated in a photovoice research project in which they expressed their personal experiences about food and gardening through photography and writing. The aspects of secondary school youths’ life experiences affected by exposure to school gardens and their impact upon their well-being were identified. The youth explicitly associated relaxation with the themes of love and connectedness, growing food, garden as a place, cooking, and food choices. They were able to demonstrate and develop food literacy competency because of their engagement with the gardening and cooking activities. Youth clubs or groups were identified as a key enabler for connection with other youth and adults. Youth shared their food literacy experiences, observing that their engagement improved some aspect of their mental well-being. Through the photovoice process, the youth identified how their involvement in green spaces enabled connections with others, and highlighted aspects of personal health and personal growth, all of which contribute to their mental well-being.

Acknowledging researcher positionality and engaging in ongoing reflexivity are important components of qualitative research. In this manuscript, we share our experiences of examining our positionality and engaging in reflexive practice related to a research project with newcomer women in Canada. As a team of researchers from diverse backgrounds, we engaged in a picture-prompted poly-ethnographic conversation to better understand our attitudes, assumptions, and biases in relation to the topic of our research and gain a better understanding of what were asking of participants. Using thematic analysis, we uncovered four themes: 1) researchers bring multiple identities, 2) researchers bring privilege/power, 3) understanding what we call home, and 4) walking in participants’ shoes. We discuss these themes in detail, highlighting their implications for reflexive research with newcomer communities.

This qualitative research employs expressive forms of writing to explore the author’s traumatic life experience in relation to the Great East Japan Earthquake which took place on March 11, 2011. The methodology chosen in the current study was a poetic-narrative autoethnography. The author selected both a collection of his English poems and poetic expressions of his Japanese second language students in English writing. While looking at each writer’s emotional response to this experience, narrative reflections and understandings of the tragedy were added. This study provides insights into a cultural trauma emergent from the disaster and presents the author’s personal experiences of living alone in a foreign country at the time of the dramatic earthquake and tsunami taking place in his home country.

Although there is some research on mid-level managers in student affairs, there is little information on their personal experiences of supervision. The primary purpose of this qualitative research study is to understand their experiences and examine them through the lens of synergistic supervision (Winston and Creamer, 2002). Synergistic supervision is the idea of a shared relationship between the supervisor and supervisee. This study also examined training given to mid-level managers. The findings include the three major themes. They are training and preparation, relationship, and support. Implications for practice are discussed.

This article draws on qualitative research to examine Mohajir women’s construction of and understanding of their ethnopolitical Mohajir identity in the port city of Karachi, Pakistan, The Mohajir identity is constructed around a shared language amongst individuals with historically diverse backgrounds, and has proven to be a potent yet divisive ethnopolitical identity. The article argues that in order to assuage the grievances of the Mohajirs, sociopolitical steps such as elimination of the job quota system must be taken by the government in order for sustainable peace to be achieved.

While the nature of their experience is unknown, hospice workers may unconsciously strive for encounters with death as a way of healing themselves and preparing for death. The purpose of this case study was to explore the psychological experience of hospice workers, whose repeated encounters with death may affect their own psyche. The study integrated psycho-biographical and hermeneutic methods. Personal growth was conceptually defined as a process of turning inward and integration of personal experiences into a larger reality. The elements supporting personal growth were present in 53 to 88% of the 17 hospice workers of the sample. The emerging themes were interconnectedness, suffering and sacrifice, and birth and rebirth. Caring to the dying becomes practice for one's own death and a form of renewal in the life of the hospice workers.

The qualitative research methodology of autoethnography has been used by the researcher to explore his own lived experience as a father, specifically focusing on his experiences with his son playing cricket. As an autoethnography, the article unfolds as a first-person narrative that endeavours to connect the personal experiences of one particular father to wider social and cultural aspects of being a parent today. The narrative draws on data spanning 18 months to explore the researcher’s “unknown” world of being a cricketing Dad.
