This paper examines capital structure determinants for service companies in Jordan between 2014 and 2018. Secondary data from 45 companies were analyzed using the panel regression approach. The results show that the independent variables, suggested as capital structure determinants, have an effect on the debt ratio made by the service companies. Size and non-debt tax shield have a positive significant effect on the debt ratio, while profitability and business risk have a negative significant impact on the debt ratio. In general, the findings support the notion that the trade-off, bankruptcy cost, agency cost and pecking order theories are crucial in explaining the capital structure of Jordanian service companies except for non-debt tax shields and tangibility factors. Jordanian service companies do not use fixed assets as collateral or companies with higher collateral value tend to borrow less debt. Although the coefficient of institutional investors is statistically insignificant, it is still negative and economically significant. This paper concludes that size, profitability, business risk, non-debt tax shields and institutional ownership factors are fundamental in terms of shaping the capital structure in Jordanian service companies.

This research is a quantitative research using data sources derived from secondary data, namely the annual report. The sampling technique used in this research is purposive sampling technique. Of the 14 Islamic commercial banks registered with the OJK, only 11 are in accordance with the sample criteria in this study. This study uses the Eviews 9 application as a tool for data processing. The analytical methods used in this research are stationarity test, panel data regression model test, classical assumption test, regression test, and path analysis test. The results obtained in this study are liquidity has a significant negative effect on capital structure. Growth opportunity and asset structure have a significant positive effect on capital structure. Meanwhile, the non-debt tax shield and profitability variables have no significant positive effect on capital structure. Liquidity has no significant negative effect on profitability, growth opportunity has no significant positive effect on profitability. Asset structure has a significant positive effect on profitability, while non-debt tax shield has a significant negative effect on capital structure. Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the role of chief financial officers’ (CFOs’) gender in financial risk taking of 58 US companies along with the impact of having women board members. Design/methodology/approach Using a panel data of 58 selected S&P 500 companies during the period 2012-2016, this paper determines whether the gender of CFOs and having women board members play a role in risk-taking behavior of firms. Findings Firms led by female CFOs are smaller in size with lower net income and net revenue. The panel data analysis shows that the impact of female CFOs on firms’ financial risk is mixed, depending on risk measures used, whereas increasing female board members reduces that risk. Research limitations/implications The data used is limited to 58 S&P 500 companies, and two of the three risk-taking measures used in the study, specifically investment in property, plant and equipment (PPE) and debt/equity ratio, may not be applicable to some industries. Practical implications The findings provide mixed evidence of risk aversion by females in executive and leadership positions, depending on the measures used and the management responsibilities they undertake (CFO versus board member) with support for the glass cliff phenomenon in which females may be leading financially precarious organizations. Social implications Female CFOs are found to be leading relatively smaller and financially poor-performing firms compared with the male CFO-led firms, thereby giving support to the glass cliff arguments. Originality/value The paper examines the role of CFOs’ gender and board diversity in risk taking as measured by the investment in PPE, debt/equity ratio and stock return volatility.

The objective of this paper is to examine the capital structure practices of the selected pharmaceutical companies in India during 1991-92 to 2009-10. The econometric analysis shows that variables like Profitability, Size, Tangibility, Growth, Risk and Non-debt tax shield are the important determinants of capital structure of the selected pharmaceutical companies in India. The results indicate that most of the determinants of capital structure suggested by capital structure theories appear to be relevant for pharmaceutical firms. In this paper, Debt Equity Ratio has been used as the proxy for capital structure.

The research aim is to examine determinant factors of Indonesia's property and real estate firms capital structure listed in the Indonesia Stock Exchange. This is a quantitative research which taken 72 observation data from 12 companies audited financial statement and fulfilled certain criteria. Processing through classical assumption tests and multivariate analysis with the help of the EViews 10 software instrument. The results show that tangibility assets, business risk, and firm size have a significant influence on capital structure partially, but sales growth and liquidity have insignificant. The determination coefficient is 42.83%  and the proportion is included in the strong criteria. Profitability as a moderating variable weakens the effect of business risk but strengthens the effect of firm size on the debt to equity ratio, further determining the company's ability to pay off its debt which is of great concern to investors and creditors. Furthermore, as a consideration for choosing the composition of a good funding decision in Indonesia.
