Learning has become more important than ever before, as we are moving towards a digital, fast-changing society. Formal university training has changed, too, from pure “lectures” to more modern formats, including e-learning, interactive and collaborative settings. Students also find plenty of information online, and the new skill in demand is finding relevant knowledge instead of having memorized knowledge. Knowledge doubles fast and becomes outdated even faster. Being aware of one’s learning behaviors was found to be a core competence of university students eager to educate themselves. This work sets a self-assessment amongst bachelor and master students of a technical programme – International Business and Engineering – into perspective with literature findings. The authors conclude that knowing ones strengths in learning is a prerequisite of acquiring additional knowledge effectively and efficiency. Students have become more demanding towards the presentation of learning opportunities. However, it is them who have to take initiative to make most out of their learning journeys. As students progress through their studies, their awareness of collaborative and interactive learning seems to decrease, which reminds one of Socrates: “The more I know, the more I realize I know nothing.” One can speculate that his finding is due to more critical reflection by master students, or that by the time the students have entered the master’s programme, the novel learning approaches have been familiarized/assimilated and do not receive further attention, which is a hint that the art of collaborative interactive learning has been mastered.

Wollega University is a public higher educational institution established in February 2007 in western part of Ethiopia. After that, the university is making a valuable contribution to the overall development of the country by producing high-level professionals, conducting problem-solving research and providing services to the surrounding communities, working in partnership with all stakeholders. This university provides teaching learning system face to face learning approaches. Due to this during this pandemic disease the university closes the teaching learning method to reduce transmissions of the virus. The researcher can able to propose E-learning as a solution to keep the continuity of education during this pandemic disease. In this paper the benefits of e-learning, features and the challenges to advancement and implementation of new educational system (E-learning) opportunities for this university are also briefly outlined.

This article reports on the use of blended learning in higher education. Blended learning has become popular in higher education in recent years. It is a move beyond traditional lecturing to incorporate face-to-face learning with e-learning, thereby creating a blend of learning experiences. The problem is that learning in higher education is complex and learning situations differ across contexts. Whilst there is face-to-face contact at some institutions, others offer distance learning or correspondence learning. In each context, the mode of learning may differ. The challenge is to cater for various learning opportunities through a series of learning interactions and to incorporate a blended approach. The aim of this study was to examine various ways of defining blended learning in different contexts. This was done through an examination of experiences of the use of blended learning in different higher education contexts. The study presents a case of blended learning in a postgraduate course. The experiences from all these cases are summarised and conclusions and recommendations are made in the context of blended learning in higher education in South Africa.

Knowledge management and learning are buzzwords in today’s society, both in terms of company competitiveness as well as in terms of education. Human resources are thus a priority for individuals and companies. The concept of knowledge management and of learning organizations has been object of increased interest by managers and scholars. The increased focus on these issues brings forth the individual as a crucial element in this process; individuals become key elements in competitiveness (Nonaka & Takeuchi: 1995) and protagonists of their own learning process (Senge: 1992).Additionally, the learning methodologies and strategies have also changed in the past decades, so that currently much is offered by means of b-learning and e-learning courses that, on the one hand, allow students to opt for several learning strategies, and on the other hand, require them to actively participate in their learning path. In fact, the evolution of ICT in studies and the growing experience of both teachers and students have gradually adapted to new methodologies. However, while materials and subject matter have been made easier and more accessible to students who do not attend classroom sessions, an underlying problem has always been present: bridging the physical distance among all the stakeholders involved in the learning process and all the difficulties that may emerge from this.Since its first edition in 2001, this Post-Graduation Program, now in its 12th edition, has undergone several changes, from its study plan to learning regime. As a means of responding to the demands of today’s market and in particular new learning styles, new possibilities have been made for attending the course which range from classroom, to blending and e-learning formats. As a means of fostering group spirit, synchronous and asynchronous participation of all students several changes were introduced this academic year. Besides the use of the Moodle platform, a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) wiziq has been introduced.In 2013-14, the program includes students from Portugal (including the Azores), Mexico and Nigeria. Moreover, this Post-Graduation Program allows students to opt for f2f, b-learning and e-learning regimes, i.e., within the same group, some students attend classes by means of a VLE, others attend some classes f2f and others using the VLE and others attend f2f classes regularly, though they also have access to the VLE. A program that combines three learning approaches/methodologies/strategies allows the possibility of assessing possible differences in terms of efficiency of these three learning methodologies, considering that these imply a change in expectations, attitude and cognitive process.Our paper focuses on a study carried out in a Post-Graduation Program at a Portuguese university, on perceived satisfaction regarding the use of ICT tools in the program, a theme which has already been object of study at UAL in recent years, both in terms of assessing and monitoring learning progress, of learner attitude toward their learning paths (Fernandes Silva & Rodrigues Duarte. 2011a & b) and the tools and methodologies made available to them and of perceived satisfaction (Fernandes Silva & Quintas: 2013).This paper corresponds to a 1st stage of a broader study that will involve all students in the referred program in 2013-14 as well as all the lecturers. Initially, a qualitative analysis is carried out based on semi-structured interviews; at a 2nd stage, we aim to create a questionnaire to be applied to a wider population.

Since September 1, 2019, GOST ISO/IEC 17025–2019 has been enacted as a national standard in the Russian Federation. The novel standard imposes a number of fundamentally new requirements for testing laboratories (hereinafter referred to as the IL or laboratory), and also supplements and specifies the requirements previously regulated by GOST ISO/IEC 17025–2009. In this regard, in order to transfer laboratories to the new requirements, the FSA issued an order in August 2019 listing the mandatory activities that IL must fulfill to bring their activities in line with the new requirements. However, a transition period desired for matching these requirements is absent on a practical level for a number of the laboratories. The purpose of the article is to facilitate a gentle, efficient and pain-free move from the requirements of GOST ISO/IEC 17025–2009 to the new requirements of GOST ISO/IEC 17025–2019, including compliance with new changes in accreditation criteria. We carried out a comparative analysis of the requirements of the new and previous versions of the standard and marked each new and significant item to which the laboratory should pay attention first of all. The new standard focuses on the application of the process approach, risk and opportunity management, as well as on implementation of the policy of impartiality, independence, minimization of competitive interests and confidentiality. The article describes the planning, implementation and monitoring of each event or phase of the transition of testing laboratories to new requirements. Moreover, the recommendations on the structure of the «Quality Manual» and self-assessment on the compliance of IL activities and QMS with the new requirements, including the use of statistical methods for substantiation of the correctness of the assessment are given as an example of the implementation of IL capabilities.

The COVID-19 pandemic literally stopped most human movement and activities as it initially spread, which included dental practices and dental education. This defined the need for significative changes in teaching and learning with the use of “e-learning” methods, also for traineeships. This study was designed to determine the undergraduate student perception of these new methods as part of their education. This involved 353 students attending the Dental School of the G. D’Annunzio University of Chieti–Pescara, from the first to the sixth years. A questionnaire in Italian and was set-up using “Google Forms” and sent by email to the students. The questionnaire was divided into three parts: the first part included questions for general information, including age, sex and year of course; the second part had multiple choice questions related to their evaluation of the e-learning teaching, using a scale of opinion in the replies to each question (e.g., “scarce”, “fair”, “satisfying”, “very good” and “excellent”); and the third part included two open questions to indicate the strengths and limitations of these new teaching and learning approaches. The categorical variables in the first and second parts of the questionnaire were evaluated using Chi squared tests, setting significance at p < 0.05, while the comments were evaluated qualitatively. The student feedback showed significant appreciation (p < 0.05) of the new methods and the efforts that the lecturers put in to provide lectures of as high a quality as possible. However, a lack of practical training was significantly perceived as an important problem in the structure of their new curriculum (p < 0.05). COVID-19 has been an epic tragedy that has hit the human population not only in terms of health and healthcare, but also quality of life. This includes the quality of dental education within universities. However, the pandemic can be seen to also represent motivation to invest in the necessary technological innovation to deliver the best possible education to our future dentists.

AbstractThe novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted our way of living in an unprecedented manner. Medical professionals at all levels have been forced to adapt to the novel virus. The delivery of surgical services and the subsequent learning opportunities for surgical residents have especially been disrupted and the pediatric surgical community has not been exempted by this. This article highlights the challenges imposed by the pandemic and outlines the various learning modalities that can be implemented to ensure continued learning opportunities throughout the pandemic and beyond. Furthermore, it aims to show how the utilization and expansion of technologies maintain and further increase the communication, as well as the exchange of and access to knowledge among peers. Virtual education-, application-, and simulation-based learning and social media, as well as telemedicine and online conferences, will play a considerable role in the future of surgical specialties and surgical education.

<p class="Paragraph1"><span lang="EN-US">The paper of Barber, Donnelly &amp; Rizvi (2013): “An avalanche is coming: Higher education and the revolution ahead”  addresses some significant issues in higher education and poses some challenging questions to ODL (Open and Distance Learning) administrators, policy makers and of course to ODL faculty in general.  Barber et al.’s paper does not specifically address the area of teaching and learning theories, strategies and methodologies per se.  In this paper I would therefore like to reflect on the impact that the contemporary changes and challenges that Barber et al. describes, have on teaching and learning approaches and paradigms.  In doing so I draw on earlier work about future learning paradigms and navigationism (Brown, 2006).  We need a fresh approach and new skills to survive the revolution ahead.  We need to rethink our teaching and learning strategies to be able to provide meaningful learning opportunities in the future that lies ahead.</span></p>

Considering the increasing demand for microlearning in informal learning spaces, the main purpose of this research is to examine the design of microlearning perceived by adult learners and experts in Korea. The research questions include: (1) what modality and content length do adult learners perceive to be relevant for microlearning? (2) what content areas do adult learners perceive to be relevant for microlearning? and (3) what are the expected impacts and future directions of microlearning perceived by the experts? The participants include 11 e-learning experts and 326 adult learners working in the fields of science and technology. Data were collected from the learner survey, focus group interview, and expert survey. Overall, this study found that adult learners tend to have some conflicting opinions about the content areas perceived to be relevant for e-learning and microlearning. The design of content that takes the modality of video consumed within 3-5 minutes was considered to be the most relevant for microlearning. Experts perceived that microlearning is an efficient and effective direction for adult learners to enhance professional knowledge and to broaden informal learning opportunities. However, the experts were less positive about the potential of microlearning for increasing convergence research and learning transfer. There was a considerable gap between desirability and feasibility in the directions toward integrating microlearning with advanced technologies.
