IMPLEMENTATION OF THE IDEAS OF «GREEN» LIBRARIES IN THE ACTIVITIES OF THE BELARUS AGRICULTURAL LIBRARY

The article shows the way the Belarus Agricultural Library (BelAL) has been following the ideas of «green libraries»: it describes environmentally friendly practices implemented in the library over the past years; particular attention is paid to the ongoing work of the Green Office Belarus Agricultural Library (GO!BelAL); the authors outlined the prospects for the development of the library in promoting the goals of sustainable development and environmental awareness.

Using educative environmental protection events such as “Environmental Protection Pioneer Campaign”, “Rewarding Recycling Campaign”, “Green Efforts Give Great Rewards Event”, “Environmental Protection Workshop”, “Environmental Campaign Day”, “Environmental Protection Carnival” and “Second-hand Bazaar” held in Park Island, Hong Kong, as a case study, the purpose is exploring how educative environmental protection events contribute to demonstrate environmentally friendly property management and raise the environmental protection awareness and encourage residents’ involvement to live green. Design/Methodology/Approach—This paper identifies environmental protection events as an effective strategy to raise environmental awareness for all of the estate residents. The objectives of environmental protection events aimat showing the importance of community involvement, demonstrating educative environmentally friendly property management and encourage residents to live green. Authors conducted twenty-five in-depth semi-structured interviews with participants so as to fully understand the contributions made by the events. Findings—Educative environmental protection events were perceived by all of the study participants as effective and educative events, which raised environmental awareness, upheld moral obligation to engage in environmental protection, and induced greater pro-environmental behavior to sustainability. Based on the results, the framework of 10 Cs is revealed which contributes to environmentally friendly environment for the next generation. These contributions are: 1) Circulating surplus materials to the needy 2) Choosing public transportation 3) Committing to green education 4) Cultivating pro-environmental behavior 5) Caring for sustainable development 6) Cutting Carbon lifestyle 7) Coordinating efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle 8) Consuming less electricity 9) Concerning ocean creatures protection 10) Ceasing ozone depleting chemicals products Practical implications—Based on the insights gained from participants, the 10 Cs contributions are made by educative environmental protection events for nurturing moral obligation to demonstrate environmentally friendly property management and raise the environmental protection awareness and encourage residents’ involvement to live green. Participants should take part in all environmental-protection measures daily. The Estate Management Company and government should deepen cooperation in environmental protection, intensify ecological preservation and build a green living environment. Originality/value—This paper urges for the importance of all residents, all estate management companies and government to engage in environmental protection for sustainable development. The aim of such an episode is to arouse all stakeholders to participate in environmental protection actively and attentively for green environment.

At a time when the Union between Scotland and England is once again under the spotlight, Remembering the Past in Nineteenth-Century Scotland examines the way in which Scotland’s national heroes were once remembered as champions of both Scottish and British patriotism. Whereas 19th-century Scotland is popularly depicted as a mire of sentimental Jacobitism and kow-towing unionism, this book shows how Scotland’s national heroes were once the embodiment of a consistent, expressive and robust view of Scottish nationality. Whether celebrating the legacy of William Wallace and Robert Bruce, the reformer John Knox, the Covenanters, 19th-century Scots rooted their national heroes in a Presbyterian and unionist view of Scotland’s past. Evidence of how history and culture have been or should be harnessed to promote sustainability in remote and rural communities is mounting. To be sustainable, development must come from within, it must serve future generations as well as those in the present and it must attend to the vitality of culture, society, the economy and the environment. Historical research has an important contribution to make to sustainability, especially if undertaken collaboratively, by challenging and transcending the boundaries between disciplines and between the professional researchers, communities and organisations which serve and work with them. The Sustainable Development Goals’ motto is ‘leaving no one behind’, and for the 17 Goals to be met, there must be a dramatic reshaping of the ways in which we interact with each other and with the environment. Enquiry into the past is a crucial part of enabling communities, in all their shapes and sizes, to develop in sustainable ways. This article considers the rural world and posits that historical enquiry has the potential to deliver insights into the world in which we live in ways that allow us to overcome the negative legacies of the past and to inform the planning of more positive and progressive futures. It draws upon the work undertaken with the Landscapes and Lifescapes project, a large partnership exploring the historic links between the Scottish Highlands and the Caribbean, to demonstrate how better understandings of the character and consequences of previous development might inform future development in ways that seek to tackle injustices and change unsustainable ways of living. What we show is how taking charge of and reinterpreting the past is intrinsic to allowing the truth (or truths) of the present situation to be brought to the surface and understood, and of providing a more solid platform for overcoming persistent injustices.

The world-wide use of scleral contact lenses has dramatically increased over the past 10 year and has changed the way that we manage patients with corneal irregularity. Successfully fitting them can be challenging especially for eyes that have significant asymmetries of the cornea or sclera. The future of scleral lens fitting is utilizing corneo-scleral topography to accurately measure the anterior ocular surface and then using software to design lenses that identically match the scleral surface and evenly vault the cornea. This process allows the practitioner to efficiently fit a customized scleral lens that successfully provides the patient with comfortable wear and improved vision.

This article examines the development of Wagnerism in late-nineteenth-century Spain, focusing on how it became an integral part of Catalan nationalism. The reception of Wagner's music and ideas in Spain was determined by the country's uneven economic development and the weakness of its musical and political institutions—the same weaknesses that were responsible for the rise of Catalan nationalism. Lack of a symphonic culture in Spain meant that audiences were not prepared to comprehend Wagner's complexity, but that same complexity made Wagner's ideas acceptable to Spanish reformers who saw in the composer an exemplar of the European ideas needed to fix Spanish problems. Thus, when Wagner's operas were first staged in Spain, the Teatro Real de Madrid stressed Wagner's continuity with operas of the past; however, critics and audiences engaged with the works as difficult forms of modern music. The rejection of Wagner in the Spanish capital cleared the way for his ideas to be adopted in Catalonia. A similar dynamic occurred as Spanish composers tried to meld Wagner into their attempts to build a nationalist school of opera composition. The failure of Tomás Bréton's Los amantes de Teruel and Garín cleared the way for Felip Pedrell's more successful theoretical fusion of Wagnerism and nationalism. While Pedrell's opera Els Pirineus was a failure, his explanation of how Wagner's ideals and nationalism could be fused in the treatise Por nuestra música cemented the link between Catalan culture and Wagnerism.

Subject. In this article we analyze how machinery, science and technologies influence the sociocultural environment that engenders the teacher's paradigm of values and views of life. Objectives. We herein outline guidance to predict the way teachers' views of life might evolve in corresponding sociocultural periods more precisely. The article analyzes making more precise forecasts of oncoming economic crises, which will cause some changes in teachers' mindset. Methods. The study involves learning methodologies, methods of prediction and forecasting, including foresight. Results. We propose and analyze the theory holding that the human civilization passes cycles during its sociocultural development in terms of a new set of values in contemporary teachers' views of life. The article sets forth our recommendations on innovation-driven views of life, mindset and thinking and, consequently, the development of intellectual qualities, knowledge, skills, cognitive activity, positive motivation to the professional activity of a teacher and alumni during more elevated periods, which requires to more precisely predict the way teachers’ mindset may change in certain sociocultural periods. Conclusions and Relevance. As the human civilization enters the innovation-driven sociocultural period, teachers and social relationships should demonstrate more innovative and environmentally-friendly attitudes and views of life.
