Ergonomics is the science and technology of fitting the activities and environment to the abilities, dimensions, and needs of people to improve performance while enhancing comfort, health and safety [1] The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of an ergonomically designed adjustable workstation for performing a repetitive industrial assembly task on operator performance and productivity. Ergonomically designed fully adjustable assembly workstations could be expensive for companies to adopt, especially the small scale industries. Therefore, a low-cost, ergonomically designed adjustable assembly workstation was designed, developed and evaluated for assembly of a product in a manufacturing company. Experiments were conducted on the existing fixed height and on the newly designed ergonomic assembly workstation using five industrial assembly operators. The operator performance on the ergonomically designed workstation was 29% higher compared to the existing non ergonomically designed fixed height assembly workstation. The increased performance was due to flexibility and ergonomic design features incorporated in the workstation.

In small-scale industries, under extreme working conditions, personnel are frequently involved in lifting and carrying raw materials, which is hazardous at times. Robot, a machine with intelligence can perform the same task with the help of control instructions fed by computer or remote control. Technological development in the area of robotics made it possible to design robotic arm with the same degree of precision as a replacement to the human intervention. This will introduce automation in small-scale industries, which saves time, reduces human effort and expenditure in production. Further, this will be a starting point for complete automation of entire process, which can be expensive and complicated. NI LabVIEW along with NI-myRIO can provide a better solution in designing a more precise and accurate robot in a very low cost, which is affordable by small-scale industries. NI-myRIO is used to generate and acquire signals for controlling and processing. Further it has an inbuilt processor and FPGA which has many reconfigurable analogue and digital features.

Small-scale product development is not for everyone, and it needs a high level of discipline, dedication, persistence, and creativity as well as a lot of work. Before setting up a small-scale business, one needs seed money, physical location of the business venture, construction work, equipment/machinery maintenance, management skills, accounting skills, and last but not least, marketing skills. For the development of any area, the small-scale industry development is very important mainly for the income source of the community and for employment opportunities. On the basis of study, four strategies that are used for the development of small-scale industries were found, and these strategies are 1) promotion and development of institutional, business groups, and cooperatives; 2) determination brands; 3) strategy competition with low cost and product development; 4) to improve final access market orientation strategies. On the basis of analysis of these strategies, they are prioritized, and the first priority is strategy.

Abstract Technology advancement contributed to an increase in industrial activities, resulting in the introduction of metal ions into water resources at concentrations well above the WHO limits. Heavy metals are highly toxic and carcinogenic; usually occur as multicomponent mixtures in aquatic environment. In present study, batch experiments have been conducted to study the dependence of varying concentration, time, pH and temperature on the uptake of Pb(II) as pure component under equilibrium conditions using thiolated saw dust. Saw dust has been chemically modified with thioglycolic acid and characterised using proximate and FTIR analyses, degree of thiolation has also been determined. To determine the effect of presence of Co(II) ions on the uptake of Pb(II) ions, batch experiments for [Pb(II) + Co(II)] mixture have been carried out for concentration ratios of 1:0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4 of Pb:Co at pH 5 and data has been interpreted using Langmuir competitive isotherm shows that adsorption of Pb(II) has been suppressed by the presence of Co(II) ions in the binary solution, hence the adsorption process is antagonistic in nature. Study also indicates the possibility of simultaneous removal of both metal ions using low cost bioadsorbent, which is economical specially for application in small scale industries.

Costing is an important issue in a competitive world. Many companies had adopted TDABC for better cost visibility. Assembly is very common activity in the small scale industries (SSI). In a SSI, many operations like riveting, drilling, fastening, loosening and tightening, hammering, labeling, aligning, etc. are carried out at the time of assembly. Also the sequence and the time of the operating vary for each product. Therefore, it is difficult to estimate the cost of complex assembly. This paper proposed a time driven activity based costing (TDABC) model to estimate the cost of assembly for SSI. TDABC uses time equations to estimate the time required for an activity. A new approach to develop the time equation using maynard operation sequence technique (MOST) is presented. This paper also presents the modification in the time equation to handle the complexity of the activity. The application of the model is presented with the case study. The cost analysis helps to identify the opportunities for low cost assembly solution.

Introduction. In developing countries, the laborer forces have managed many of the industrial works. As a result, the process of the work has put the health and lives of workers at risk. Thus, this study was designed to assess occupational injury and its correlated factors among small-scale industry workers in the towns of Bale Zone, Southeast Ethiopia. Methods. An institution-based cross-sectional study design was employed among five hundred ninety small-scale industries in towns of Bale zone, Southeast Ethiopia, in March to April 2016. Multistage sampling was applied to recruit the study subjects. Data were collected through interviewer-administered questionnaires. A structured questionnaire addressing the objectives of the study was used. EpiData was used for data entry, and the data were exported to SPSS windows version 20 for analysis. Descriptive statistics like frequency and percentage were used for the prevalence, whereas binary and multiple logistic regressions were employed to identify the predictors of the outcome variable. Results. A total of 574 workers from different small-scale industries, including woodwork, metalwork, and concrete block construction, participated in the study with a response rate of 97.3%. In this study, among the total participants of the study, 43.2% (248), 30% (172), and 21.6% (124) of them had encountered lifetime, last one year, and six months occupational injury, respectively. Taking health and safety training, presence of any things on the floor that can cause accidents and occupational risk perception were independent predictors of occupational injury. The presence of any things on the floor that can cause accidents and having a low-risk perception increases occupational injury by 12.69 [AOR: 12.69, (1.67–96.13)] and 2.84 [AOR: 2.84, (1.80–4.49)], respectively. Conclusion. About one in three occupational injuries occurred among small-scale industry workers. Health and safety training should be provided for every worker in small-scale industries. Supportive supervision focusing awareness creation, economic stability, and health care from health office, social and labor affair office, and other concerned body is highly recommended. District or town health office should address the identified factors to promote the health of the workers.

Objective: Recent advances in participatory pro-grams for improving workplace conditions are discussed to examine practical ways to facilitate ergonomics improvements. Background: Participatory training programs are gaining importance, particularly in promoting occupational health and safety in small-scale workplaces. These pro-grams have led to many improvements that can reduce work-related risks in varied situations. Materials: Recent experiences in participatory action–oriented training programs in small workplaces and agriculture are reviewed. The emphasis of the review is on training steps, types of improvements achieved, and the use of action tools by trainers and training participants. Results: Immediate improvements in multiple technical areas are targeted, including materials handling, workstation design, physical environment, welfare facilities, and work organization. In facilitating ergonomics improvements in each local situation, it is important to focus on (a) building on local good practices; (b) applying practical, simple improvements that apply the basic principles of ergonomics; and (c) developing action-oriented toolkits for direct use by workers and managers. This facilitation process is effective when locally designed action toolkits are used by trainers, including local good examples, action checklists, and illustrated how-to guides. Intervention studies demonstrate the effectiveness of participatory steps that use these toolkits in promoting good practices and reducing work-related risks. Conclusion: In facilitating ergonomics improvements in small-scale workplaces, it is important to focus on practical, low-cost improvements that build on local good practices. The use of action-oriented toolkits reflecting basic ergonomics principles is helpful. The promotion of the intercountry networking of positive experiences in participatory training is suggested.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects on operator performance and satisfaction of an ergonomically designed workstation for performing a repetitive industrial assembly task. Experiments were conducted in a company with industrial workers using existing and newly developed workstations. Operator performance on the ergonomically designed workstation was 27% higher compared to the existing non-ergonomically designed workstation. Worker satisfaction score was also improved by 41% in the ergonomically designed workstation condition. The new workstation for a repetitive assembly task had highly significant positive effect on worker performance and satisfaction. Special features of the ergonomically designed assembly workstation were an adjustable and adequate worktable, an adjustable and ergonomically designed chair, ergonomically designed hand tools and a systematic layout of the workstation components.
