Autistic university students face stigma. Online trainings have been used to improve explicit autism stigma (social distance) and knowledge among university students in different countries. However, autistic university students have not typically been involved in developing such trainings. We developed two autism trainings: a participatory training (developed in collaboration with autistic university students) and a non-participatory training. We evaluated these trainings with undergraduate students in the United States and Lebanon. A pilot study revealed improvements in implicit biases (measured with an Implicit Association Test) and knowledge following both trainings, but no clear benefit of the participatory training in particular. Feedback revealed that participants found the Implicit Association Test tedious, suggesting that it might have dampened effects by boring participants. To increase engagement, we removed the Implicit Association Test and conducted a cross-university training comparison which revealed evidence that the participatory training was more effective than the non-participatory training at improving autism knowledge, explicit stigma, and attitudes toward inclusion. Autistic co-authors coded participant feedback and identified three key themes to guide future training development and adaptation: an (inter)personal element, accessibility, and clarity of information. These studies provide empirical support for the oft-cited, but rarely directed tested, benefits of involving autistic people in research about autism. Lay abstract Autistic university students are often left out because people do not understand autism. We wanted to help people understand autism. Most autism trainings are not made by autistic people. Autistic people know what it is like to be autistic. So autistic people may be the best teachers when it comes to teaching about autism. Autistic students and non-autistic professors made an autism training. The students made videos for the training. They also helped make questions to see what people learned from the trainings. Professors who are not autistic made a training on their own. Students in New York City tried out the trainings. After they answered questions, they did either the training the autistic students helped make or the training made by only professors. Then, they answered questions again. We learned from the students how to make our trainings better. Then, students from two universities in the United States and one university in Lebanon did our trainings and questions. Both trainings made hidden feelings about autism better. The training autistic students helped make taught students more than the training professors made on their own. The autistic-led training also helped students accept autism more. These studies show that autistic students can make autism research and trainings better. At the end of this article, autistic students share their ideas for how to make autism trainings even better in the future.

Community health workers (CHWs) are a key human resource for health, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Participatory training approaches for CHWs are increasingly important as they actively engage participants, facilitate shared learning, and are more responsive to the needs of the learners. In addition, participatory training methods build teamwork and confidence, enhance critical thinking, and are interesting to learners. This chapter presents different participatory training methods for CHWs, including role-plays, demonstrations, songs, small and large group discussions, brainstorming, debates, simulations, exercises, field trips, gallery walks, class presentations, practicals, case studies, and interactive exercises. The relative advantages and disadvantages of each method are also presented. Despite the strengths and weaknesses of each of the methods, it is important that the local context is always considered while selecting which ones to be used in a CHW training programme.

The major problem in fishing production activities faced by fishermen in Wawatu Village is the limited fishing ground area caused by unfriendly-environmentally fishing activities, unorganized spawning and nursery areas so that the availability of fish stocks in their habitats is insufficient for fishermen and traditional fishery businesses. The main focus of this community dedication activity was to further optimize FADs functions as a fishing tool, attracting squid and crabs to gather inside the FADs area. This activity can be one of the solutions to increase fish production during the COVID-19 pandemic in Wawatu Village, North Moramo District, South Konawe Regency. There were two approaches in this activity, namely 1) approach of participatory training to partners, 2) technology applications at the demonstration plot (demplot) location. The result showed that the community was quite enthusiastic in participating in all activities including training and discussion activities as well as the application of environmentally friendly FADs technology, including active participation in material preparation, making of FADs and installing FADs in the water.

Abstract Background Health care-associated infections (HAI) are one of the most common adverse events in care delivery and a major public health problem. A large percentage of HAI in hospitals are preventable through effective infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. IPC trainings for health care personnel based only on technical content do not lead to sustainable improvement of IPC standard precautions. To address this problem, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in collaboration with the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) developed a multimodal training approach to facilitate the transfer of IPC competences into working routine in Nigerian health facilities. Objectives The training should foster the ability of health care workers to act and communicate participatory, analyze IPC problems systemically and to develop and perform tailored IPC activities in their health facilities. It should empower health care workers to initiate and promote sustainable IPC improvement locally. Results We developed a participatory training approach which focusses on the relational and organizational dimension of IPC. It addresses the human and infrastructural factors for IPC compliance in daily working routine. A variety of training methods offers practice tools in communication, systemic thinking and team work, and allows experiencing a participatory attitude. The training program consists of two face to face workshops and an interjacent field project. 28 Health care workers of 14 health facilities in Lagos State participated the first implementation of the training program in 2018. The training evaluation showed the high relevance of the training to the HCW. The field projects showed that the participants could apply the participatory approach for IPC improvement. Conclusions A participatory and systemic approach for IPC trainings enables health care workers to take action for IPC improvement locally. Key messages We developed and implemented a participatory training approach that addresses the relational and organizational dimension of IPC. Health care workers took tailored actions for IPC improvement locally.

The paper is dealing with a developed concept named Empowerment Teaching, which is based on practical teaching experience gained in various mining universities. It is demonstrated that this concept can be used to increase the effectiveness of knowledge transfer to mining countries in the world, as well as to overcome cultural barriers between lecturers and their students. The two models of participatory training, which are proposed to be named “physical” and “emotional” models, are portrayed. The authors are convinced that participatory training methods can be an ideal answer to a challenge associated with workers’ competencies in mining, namely – the potential of highly motivated and well-educated young academics is often diminished by a lack of ability to apply their knowledge. A special emphasis is made on the possible application of empowerment teaching for educational and training activities in the field of occupational safety and health (OSH), which is a matter of utmost importance for the mining industry. Several benchmarking initiatives in the field of OSH (“safety culture”, zero-accident vision) are underlined to be encouraged and promoted by means of new teaching methods. The examples of successful international cooperation among universities are given, as well.
