Knowing the actual power requirement of each individual component in a desktop computer is useful when sizing a power supply or when upgrading the PC. In this paper the power demand by various components within six different computer systems was investigated. Measurements of the actual current drawn from each voltage rail when idle and when in use were made and the data examined. The results obtained showed that the total power drawn at idle and on CPU load test was mainly due to the load demand on the +12V rails and this varied significantly between the computer systems; meanwhile +5V and +3.3V lines drew very little power and the total power consumed did not vary significantly between systems on idle state. The assessment revealed that it is highly unlikely that a modern computer system will ever overload either the +5V or +3.3V rails of an ATX12V 2.x compliant power supply; the +12 rails on the other hand, are very heavily used especially under load. Thus, it is very likely that the ratings for the +12V rails is more important than the total wattage rating when it comes choosing a power supply unit for a computer system.

Abstract Over the years, failures induced by an electrostatic discharge (ESD) have become a major concern for semiconductor manufacturers and electronic equipment makers. The ESD events that cause destructive failures have been studied extensively [1, 2]. However, not all ESD events cause permanent damage. Some events lead to recoverable failures that disrupt system functionality only temporarily (e.g. reboot, lockup, and loss of data). These recoverable failures are not as well understood as the ones causing permanent damage and tend to be ignored in the ESD literature [3, 4]. This paper analyzes and characterizes how these recoverable failures affect computer systems. An experimental methodology is developed to characterize the sensitivity of motherboards to ESD by simulating the systemlevel ESD events induced by computer users. The manuscript presents a case study where this methodology was used to evaluate the robustness of desktop computers to ESD. The method helped isolate several weak nets contributing to the failures and identified a design improvement. The result was that the robustness of the systems improved by a factor of 2.

This chapter addresses the relationship between AI systems and the concept of accountability. To understand accountability in the context of AI systems, one must begin by examining the various ways the term is used and the variety of concepts to which it is meant to refer. Accountability is often associated with transparency, the principle that systems and processes should be accessible to those affected through an understanding of their structure or function. For a computer system, this often means disclosure about the system’s existence, nature, and scope; scrutiny of its underlying data and reasoning approaches; and connection of the operative rules implemented by the system to the governing norms of its context. Transparency is a useful tool in the governance of computer systems, but only insofar as it serves accountability. There are other mechanisms available for building computer systems that support accountability of their creators and operators. Ultimately, accountability requires establishing answerability relationships that serve the interests of those affected by AI systems.

A comparative evaluation of three implementations of a large databank, the NIOSH Registry of Toxic Effects of Chem ical Substances, has been carried out. The three implementa tions are: a printed index, a text searching computer system, and a computerised chemical databank system, with substruc ture searching facilities. Seven test queries were used, with the aim of drawing conclusions of general relevance to chemical databank searching. The computer systems were shown to have advantages over printed indexes for several of the queries, including those involving an element of browsing. Substructure search facilities were especially advantageous. Aspects of indexing of data present, and the criteria for inclusion of types of data, were also highlighted.

Who, in the organization, buys the computer system? How are various departments involved in the organizational decision process? T V Seshadri and N Kinra analyse the decision processes of 30 organizations that had bought a computer system—mini, mainframe, or macro. Based on a questionnaire study and factor analysis, the authors conclude that the EDP department and Board of Directors are critical in the buying grids of the purchasing organizations. They draw implications of their findings for managers marketing computer systems.

The article examines the main features of the layout of electrical equipment for shop networks of internal power supply with the definition of indicators for a group of shop customers connected to a single power center, affecting the choice of the structure of schemes for shop network sites. The parameters characterizing the circuit topology are revealed. A study is presented of the influence of the load factor of workshop transformers on their reactive power factor, it is proved by calculation by technical and economic criteria the feasibility of replacing a workshop transformer with two with a lower total power. The calculation of energy savings in the in-plant power supply systems. The type of dependences tgφ of transformers ТМ and ТСЗ with various rated powers in the function of loading transformers is established. The most significant factors of the growth of idle power losses during operation are presented. With determination of losses of active and reactive power and electricity in transformers and losses of active power in a high voltage distribution network A feasibility study was carried out on the options for internal power supply schemes with two transformers of lower power installed instead of one, and the feasibility of such a replacement to increase the efficiency of the equipment was proved and the estimated payback period for the investment capital was determined. A comparative analysis of the studied power supply schemes of industrial enterprises with the identification of their advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract: In economic load dispatch problem scheduling of loads is done in order to achieve reliable power supply with reduced costs. With the increase in load demand with each passing year energy crisis is increasing hence an area of study where fuel costs can be reduced was proposed. This can be achieved using various methods among which the methods discussed in this paper are Lambda Iteration, Particle Swarm Operation and Genetic Algorithm. Based on numerical results the best optimization technique can be figured out among the discussed methods. Keywords: Lambda Iteration, PSO, GA, economic load dispatch, optimization solutions

The article describes the generally positive experience of Court of Justice of the European Union in managing the Covid-19 crisis. Before the outbreak of the Covid-19 crisis the Court had established an effective structure to cope with risks and issues related to pandemics. It benefited from an extensive migration to a modern computer operating system and the replacement of traditional desktop computers by portable devices capable of remotely connecting to the Court’s network. Appropriate teleworking and extensive dematerialisation and simplification of standard administrative procedures took place and proved their effectiveness. The disruptive dimensions of COVID-19 pandemic forced the CJEU to accelerate transformations – not only digital but managerial and judicial processes The author analyses several phases of organising the functioning of the Court during the pandemic and comes to the conclusion that that the Court proved to be well prepared to tackle the issues raised by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the quest of the future organisation will also have to do more with smart management and the new modes of working. Keywords: Justice, Court Administration, COVID-19, CJEU.
