Aqueous extracts of whole alfalfa plants (AP) and alfalfa pellets (APe) were examined for nutritional values, bioactive compounds (total phenolic content (TPC), phenolic compounds (PC), total flavonoids content (TFC), flavonoids compounds (FC), isoflavones), amino acids (AA) and antioxidant activity of AP and APe assessed via a DHHP radical scavenging assay and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. The potential ingredients in the form of AP and APe were used to evaluate the nutritional values measured by chemical composition, and to investigate bioactive compounds, AA and antioxidant activity to further contribute to use as a feed ingredient or application as a high-value alternative feed supplement in the ruminant diet. Crude protein and tannins were higher in the APe (18.17 and 3.08 %) than the AP (16.21 and 1.80 %). Higher content of organic matter, crude fiber, neutral-detergent fiber, acid-detergent fiber, acid-detergent lignin was observed for AP than APe. The TPC and TFC were more abundant in AP than in APe and AP also showed stronger antioxidant activity via DPPH than APe, with positive correlations of TPC, TFC and DPPH. The highest values of gallic acid in terms of PC and apigenin in terms of FC of APe were 215.30 and 2278.27 µg/g dry weight (DW), respectively, while the highest levels of genistein and daidzein occurred in AP at 104.37 and 130.91 µg/g DW, respectively. The total of essential AA was found to be in vary the range of 9.33 to 16689.47 µg/g DW in different forms of samples, with valine as the highest (5451 µg/g DW) in APe, followed by phenylalanine (4.30 µg/g DW) in AP.

Citrus. reticulata Blanco cv. Suavissima friut has long been regarded as a food and medicinal plant. We investigated the antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract of peel and pulp part of fruit growned in Zhejiang Province, PR. China by several in-vitro systems of assay, namely DPPH radical-scavenging activity, ABTS.+ radical-scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Total phenolic content was measured by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The total flavonoids contents were measured using a modified colorimetric method.The extracts of different samples were found to have different levels of antioxidant activity in the systems tested. Ethanol extracts of the fruit showed stronger antioxidant activities compared with those of the commercial compound (Trolox). The results suggest that Citrus. reticulata Blanco cv. Suavissima friut can be a good source of natural antioxidant.

The responses of two species of microalgae, Chlorella sorokiniana and Chlorella zofingiensis, were compared regarding their morphological and biochemical properties under photoautotrophic and mixotrophic conditions. These microalgae were cultured under both conditions, and their crude ethanolic extracts were examined for their pigment and total phenolic contents. In addition, the microalgae’s antioxidant activities were determined using a DPPH radical scavenging assay and a ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Both strains showed increases in cell size due to the accumulation of lipid bodies and other cell contents, especially carotenoids, under the mixotrophic condition. Notably, reductions in phenolic and chlorophyll contents were observed to be associated with lower antioxidant activity. C. zofingiensis compared with C. sorokiniana, demonstrated higher antioxidant activity and carotenoid content. This study showed that different species of microalgae responded differently to varying conditions by producing different types of metabolites, as evidenced by the production of higher levels of phenolic compounds under the photoautotrophic condition and the production of the same levels of carotenoids under both photoautotrophic and mixotrophic conditions.

Objective: This study aimed to fractionate the antioxidant activity of the ethyl acetate leaf extract and to characterize the most active fractionsaccording to compound groups.Methods: The ethyl acetate extract was fractionated with column chromatography using a gradient elution system. Fractions were first screenedqualitatively for antioxidant activity before active fractions were quantified with respect to in vitro antioxidant activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay and the ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. The compound groups were identifiedfollowing separation by thin-layer chromatography.Results: Fraction 11 exhibited the greatest DPPH radical-scavenging activity, with an IC50 value of 6.58 μg/mL, while the fraction with the greatestantioxidant activity according to the FRAP assay was fraction 10, with a ferric ion equivalent antioxidant activity value of 1015.34 μmol/g.Conclusion: Compound group identification revealed that Fractions 10 and 11 contained flavonoids, with two common to both fractions, whilefraction 10 also contained one specific flavonoid.

Background: Consumption of traditional herbal beverages has been generally increased in the last decades, Terebinth coffee, known as ‘‘menengic coffee’’ in Turkish, is one of the most consumed herbal coffees in Turkey, turpentine tree is one of the components of the Mediterranean bush, particularly in Algeria, known as Betoum el Kiffan is largely used as food and in traditional medicine. Aims: In this study, Total phenol, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity of three extracts of Pistacia trebinthus fruit growing in Algeria was measured using radical scavenging activity tests and metal-related tests including, ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The chemical composition profile of the fruits and the coffee brands was identified by thin-layer chromatography, the effects of roasting method of this fruit was rivaled also. Materials and Methods: The total phenolic content of the extracts was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. All extracts of the terebinth fruits and coffee brands displayed a high DPPH scavenging effect. Results: The results of the ferric-reducing antioxidant power show that the reduction capacity is proportional to the increase in the concentration of the samples. All the extracts of the plant exhibit antioxidant activities lower than those of the reference product besides the infusion extract of the P. terebinthus roasted coffee, which is the most active with an optical density of 1.68 nm at a concentration of 400 μg/mL. The chromatography results show that the various extracts of Pistacia terebinthus fruit carry a large number of polyphenols, in particular the carboxylic acids phenols. Conclusions: The plant can be considered as a coffee substitute and opens up promising avenues for the food and pharmaceutical industry in Algeria. SummaryIntroduction:Pharmaceutical industry is forced to develop new pharmacologically active molecules. Like other plants, mosses are considered to be potential source of new biologically active compounds.Objective:The present study was designed to evaluate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of 8 moss species:Hypnum cupressiforme, Homalothecium sericeum, Thuidium delicatulum, Homalothecium lutescens, Homalothecium nitens,Leucodon sciuroides, Ctenidium molluscum,andEurhynchium striatulumobtained from Turkey.Methods:The antimicrobial activity of extracts was investigated against four Gram (+) and six Gram (−) bacterial strains and three tested fungi. Total phenolic content (TPC), cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and DPPH radical scavenging activity assays were applied to determine the antioxidant activity.Results:All moss extacts were found to be active against all the organisms exceptHomalothecium nitens.Especially,H. sericeumandE. striatulumshowed the best antioxidant activity.Conclusion:The obtained results show that mosses may be used as possible natural antioxidant, antimicrobial agents to control various human, animal and plant diseases.

Phenolic antioxidants have multiple benefits to human health. Polyphenols are responsible for the antioxidant activity in apples. Antioxidant activities were assessed using the ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2-dipheny l-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assays in different cultivars and different parts of apples grown in China. The phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities differed significantly among the four apple cultivars. Guoguang had the highest phenolic concentration and antioxidant activity and Golden Delicious had the lowest. The peels had the highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents followed by the cores and flesh. Anthocyanins were detected only in red apple peels. Peel and core had greater antioxidant activities than apple flesh. FRAP values were inversely correlated with phenolic contents, whereas no clear relationship could be observed between DPPH values and phenolic contents. The higher levels of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities of apple peels and cores than flesh may be of technological interest as a valuable source of antioxidants.

Mirabilis jalapa L. (Nyctaginaceae) is a traditional specie and widely distributed in most parts of China. Its leaves, roots, seed and flowers are used as drugs pharmacological activity. This is the first report on the biological activity against activities of scavenging free radical and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Mirabilis jalapa L. seed epicarp (MJSE) was immersed with ethanol (or methanol, ethyl acetate, water) in the ultrasonic instrument, then determination of total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) of these extracts were performed. Furthermore, antioxidant activities of these extracts were evaluated by using DPPH radical scavenging, hydroxyl radical scavenging and FRAP. The TPC, TFC, FRAP and scavenging activities against DPPH and OH radical were in the following order ethyl acetate >ethanol>methanol>water. The TPC of ethyl acetate extract is 4.24 mg GAE /g of dry power weight (DPW), and TFC 0.39 mg RE/ g DPW. ethyl acetate extract exhibit high free radical scavenging rate, IC50 of DPPH and OH assay were 6.62 mg DPW/ml and 3.49 mg DPW/ml, respectively. The TPC values, IC50 obtained from DPPH assay and FRAP assay were highly correlated with correlation of determination (R2 = 0.9878, R2 = 0.9419). The present study confirmed that MJSE has a strong antioxidant activity and can be considered to be safe and an inexpensive source of natural antioxidants and drugs.

The genus Vachellia, previously known as Acacia, belongs to the family Fabaceae, subfamily Leguminosae, which are flowering plants, commonly known as thorn trees. They are traditionally used medicinally in various countries including South Africa for the treatment of ailments such as fever, sore throat, Tuberculosis, convulsions and as sedatives. The aim of this study was to determine biochemical variations in five Vachellia species and correlate their metabolite profiles to antioxidant activity using a chemometric approach. The antioxidant activity of five Vachellia aqueous-methanolic extracts were analyzed using three methods: 2,2-di-phenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS+) analysis and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay by means of serial dilution and bioautography with the thin-layer chromatography (TLC) method. Amongst the Vachellia extracts tested, V. karroo, V. kosiensis and V. xanthophloea demonstrated the highest DPPH, ABTS+ and FRAP inhibitory activity. The antioxidant activities of DPPH were higher than those obtained by ABTS+, although these values varied among the Vachellia species. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), coupled with multivariate statistical modeling tools such as principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), were performed to profile metabolites responsible for the observed activity. The OPLS-DA categorized the five Vachellia species, separating them into two groups, with V. karroo, V. kosiensis and V. xanthophloea demonstrating significantly higher radical scavenging activity than V. tortilis and V. sieberiana, which clustered together to form another group with lower radical scavenging activity. Annotation of metabolites was carried out using the ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-qTOF-MS), and it tentatively identified 23 metabolites of significance, including epigallocatechin (m/z = 305.0659), methyl gallate (m/z = 183.0294) and quercetin (m/z = 301.0358), amongst others. These results elucidated the metabolites that separated the Vachellia species from each other and demonstrated their possible free radical scavenging activities.

In this study, the antioxidant activity values of infusions at different temperatures of the commercially sold rosehip tea bag. To determine the effect of different infusion temperatures on antioxidant activity, 7 different temperatures (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90°C) also including cold infusions temperatures were selected. Infusions of the rosehip tea bags were prepared with packaged drinking water for 5 minutes (recommended time in tea bag packaging) at these temperatures. Antioxidant activity values of the infused extracts were determined by antioxidant activity determination methods: TPC (Total Phenolic Compound), CUPRAC (Cu (II) Ion Reducing Antioxidant Capacity), FRAP (Iron (III) Ion Reducing Antioxidant Power) and ABTS•+ (2.2-azinobis- (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)) radical scavenging assay. According to the results obtained by the antioxidant determination methods, the highest and lowest activity values for TPC, FRAP and ABTS were measured at 90°C and 0°C, respectively, and a positive correlation was found between temperature and antioxidant activity values. Contrary to the activity values determined in these methods, in the CUPRAC method, the highest and the lowest activity value was measured at 45°C and 90 °C, respectively. As determined in the CUPRAC method, infusions of rosehip tea at low temperatures may provide an advantage in terms of the solubility of some phenolics that can be denatured at high temperatures. In addition, rosehip tea infusions at lower temperatures will contribute to lower energy costs.

The Zanthoxylum avicennae 95% EtoH extracts after concentration were dissolved in H2O and extracted with EtoAc and n-BuOH Successively. The n-BuOH layer was added to Diaion HP-20 macroporous resin column, then the resin was washed by distilled water to get rid of impurity, then washed by 20%, 40% and 60% methanol individually, and obtained M20, M40and M60respectively. And antioxidant activity was assessed using three methods: DPPH radical-scavenging activity, ABTS+radical-scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. The results indicate that TEAC value of M40were higher than other part extracted from Zanthoxylum avicennae 95% EtoH extracts during three methods .The results of the experiments also can find M40is the strongest antioxidant activity part in Zanthoxylum avicennae 95% EtoH extracts and provide reference for further isolating the part M40.
