AN EVALUATION OF THE EVIDENCE OF BURNOUT AMONG ULTRASOUND PRACTITIONERS IN RIVERS STATE

Background: Occupational burnout has become a critical issue among ultrasound practitioners. Inappropriate management of occupational burnout can lead to serious health problems. Aim: To evaluate the evidence of burnout among ultrasound practitioners in Rivers State. Materials and methods: A survey of ultrasound practitioners in selected diagnostic imaging facilities in Port Harcourt and its environs was conducted between November 2018 and March 2019 to evaluate the evidence of burnout. A descriptive survey design was employed and selection of the facilities was done using a systematic sampling technique. 21 diagnostic imaging facilities were used. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Management of the facilities. Data were obtained from structured questionnaires administered to 50 ultrasound practitioners in these facilities, who accepted to participate in the study. The questionnaire surveyed basic demographic data, time to get to work, experiences, practices, the number of night shifts and other factors that predispose burnout. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 20. Results: The factors contributing to burnout among ultrasound practitioners are understaffing leading to work overload and excessive overtime work (41%), hostile interactions with patients' relatives (34%), interactions with colleagues (20%), and conflict with Boss/supervisor (5%). Burnout manifests differently among the practitioners as feelings of being worn-out and weary (46%), being sick (31%), being emotionally drained (23%). Conclusion: Ultrasound practitioners in Rivers State suffer a high level of burnout. Issues of understaffing and interpersonal communication skills should be addressed in order to minimize the incidence of burnout.

<p><strong>Background and Objective:</strong> Coronavirus induced disease (COVID-19) is affecting people all around the world. The rising number of deaths due to COVID-19 is not only harassing people but also causing strong emotions in adults as well as in children due to anxiety, fear and stress. The objective of this study was to assess the fears, anxiety and stress due to COVID-19 pandemic and related issues among the apprentices at various levels in different parts of world. <strong>Methods: </strong>It was a cross sectional survey design to assess the students/trainee&rsquo;s immediate psychological response during COVID-19 outbreak by using an anonymous online questionnaire. A snowball sampling technique was conducted focusing general public all around the world from 3rd April 2020 till 7th April 2020. A total of N=354 participants filled the form completely. The structured questionnaire collected information on demographic data and psychological aspect of this outbreak, including extreme fear and uncertainty. <strong>Results:</strong> A total of N = 354 participants completed the questionnaire; majority were from the age group of 21&ndash;30 years. Approximately 66.4% were females and 33.6% males. Participants from Asia were 83.6% while 9.9%, 3.4%, 2.8% and 1% from America/Canada, Europe, Africa and Australia respectively. Out of n = 354 participants 59.3% were relying on health professionals for authentic source of information regarding COVID-19 while 16.4%, 15% and 5.4% considered social media, television and World Health Organization (WHO) website respectively as their authentic guide. Out of the (n = 354) participants 80.5% were afraid about health status during COVID-19 most predominantly females (66.3%) (P = 0.000). A total of 65.8% participants felt agitated or irritated in this outbreak. <strong>Conclusion:</strong> COVID-19 lockdowns are affecting both physical and mental health of students and apprentices enrolled at different levels of education. Females are more affected and concerned to their loved ones and themselves. Working norms are being maintained and responsibilities are being fulfilled despite this grave situation.</p>

This study aimed at assessing parental awareness of accidents prevention strategies towards the physical wellbeing of preschool children in Port Harcourt metropolis, Rivers State. A quantitative survey design was used for the study. A non-proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used to select 600 respondents who were parents with children between the ages of 1-6 years old in Port Harcourt local government area. A simple random sampling technique was also used to select 6 towns that participated in the study. Data was collected through a questionnaire and then analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences. Respondents from the study were aware to a high extent that disallowing faulty balconies/rails where little preschoolers are can prevent dangerous falls; living in houses with windows shield will protect preschoolers; disallowing faulty electrical outlets in the home can save preschoolers from accidents; and avoiding careless storage of sharp objects in the home can prevent cuts among preschoolers. They also showed high extent of awareness that teaching preschoolers the dangers of playing around fires; teaching parents the rudiments of safety for preschoolers; teaching preschoolers the dangers of playing with sharp objects, and teaching preschoolers the dangers of playing around pools can help prevent avoidable injuries. The result also showed high extent of awareness that avoiding wrong placing of kerosene stove or gas cylinders within the reach of preschoolers; avoiding smoking in the presence of children can reduce the risk of preschoolers attempting the act of smoking, and parents who are more careful in home arrangement and storage of objects can prevent accidents among preschoolers. This study therefore reveals adequate environmental consciousness by parents; adequate teaching on safety measures and effective behaviour management are significant strategies for home accident prevention among parents for the physical wellbeing of preschool children.

The aim of this paper was to examine community perspective to petroleum exploitation and pollution in Ogoni, Rivers State. To achieve this aim, the objective was to determine the extent to which the pollution of the environment has affected the people’s views of usefulness of the resources in their communities. The survey design method was employed. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 21 oil bearing communities from the four Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Ogoniland. The data were collected using interviews, focus group discussions, oral testimonies and questionnaires. Being qualitative; transcriptions, rewriting and coding were employed in data analysis, except for the questionnaires which adopted descriptive statistical methods. Results showed that majority of the people have not benefitted from the petroleum resources in their communities. It was revealed that pollution has changed the people’s views of the usefulness of petroleum resources, as they clearly see the resources in their communities as a curse. However, many communities believed that there was no sincerity on the part of their leaders, as the dividends claimed to be given by the multinational oil companies (MNOCs) for the welfare and benefit of the people were not visible. It is recommended that in order to change the perception of the people toward petroleum exploitation, the MNOCs should massively develop the host communities with basic social amenities and deal directly with the land owners whose portions of land are directly affected and not through the chiefs or the Community Based Organisations (CBOs).

The study was designed to investigate level of teachers’ awareness of their roles in counselling secondary schools for skill acquisition in rivers state. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population of the study consist of 8196 (4436 males and 3760) females. A samples size of 450 teachers which was 5% of the population was selected being 222 males and 190 females, using the stratified random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection included a self constructed questionnaire’, which was based on a four point likert type scale of very high extent (4points), high extent (3 points) low extent (2 points) and very low extent. (1point).The mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. Findings showed among others that the extent of teachers’ awareness of their roles in counselling secondary school students for skill acquisition in school is poor and this implies that the students are not exposed to adequate knowledge of the need for skill acquisition which will still lead to laziness and idleness of our graduates. The study therefore recommended among others that ; adequate training should be given to teachers of their roles as counsellors in secondary schools and enough time should be created for guidance and counselling programme in the school time table so that teachers can comfortably handle their clients

The study assessed ICT skills of Library and Information Science (LIS) educators for the adoption of Blended Learning in Rivers State. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, with a population of 45; census sampling technique was adopted to sample all the 45 library educators in four library schools in Rivers. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data for the study. 42 copies of the instrument were returned and found valid for analysis. The data collected were analyzed using mean scores and simple percentages. The findings revealed that despite the fact that LIS educators could use basic computer interfaces, mobile and new media technologies for blended learning, they were not adopting blended learning. The challenges were attributed to lack of facilities, lack of skills and lack of policy. It was therefore, recommended among other things that Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria should formulate a policy that will motivate and guide the use of blended learning in LIS education and LIS educators should acquire skills to exploit blended learning. The aim of this study is to investigate the challenges facing the planning of mathematics programme in Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive research survey design. The population of the study comprised ninety (90) respondents. Stratified and systematic sampling technique was used to select the sample population. The study employed the used of questionnaire as instrument for data collection. Two lecturers from Educational Administration and planning from University of Abuja was consulted to validate the questionnaire. Three research questions and two hypotheses were developed for the study. Test-retest reliability was employed for the study. Percentage and Chi-square test was used to test the hypotheses and data collected from the study. The result revealed that there are challenges facing the planning of mathematics programme of senior secondary education and the challenges includes; inadequate data/information to plan, inadequate funding of planning of mathematics programme, poor capacity development of few mathematics planners, inadequate professional mathematics planners ,political instability, corruption and lack of political will to support planning of mathematics education. The study concluded that the implication of the challenges on the implementation mathematics education is poor implementation of the mathematics programme in the senior secondary schools. The study recommends that the government should increase the funding of educational planning in the country especially mathematics education.

The purpose of this study was to identify the home factors that influence performance in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)  in secondary schools in Mbeere North Sub-county. A survey design was used to conduct this study.  The study was carried out in Mbeere North Sub-county, which is one of the divisions of Mbeere north Sub County. Mbeere North Sub-county has 4 locations. The target population was all private and public secondary schools in Mbeere north Sub County containing an estimated population of 2002 students, 113 teachers and 12 headteachers. Samples from the government schools in Mbeere North Sub-county were selected using stratified sampling technique. Purposive sampling to select the headteachers and teachers was used. The use of systematic sampling was employed; therefore, ten per cent (10%) of the target student population was incorporated in the sample of the population. A pilot study was conducted in one of the secondary schools but not included in the sample. Data was collected on variables such as parents' occupation, parents' commitment to students' learning, among others. Descriptive statistics such as percentages and frequency distribution were used in the presentation of the data. There was found to be a positive correlation between various home factors such as absenteeism, miraa farming and parental occupation and academic achievement.  The findings from this study also suggest that students who performed dismally in KCSE examinations also were from homes where parents had low-income occupations (peasants). The study recommended that strict discipline should be instilled in students, while the community is sensitized concerning drug use and abuse.

Background: Utilization of self-protective equipment at the workplace of battery technicians could consequently protect the health of the artisans ‘and prevent lead-related occupational hazards. This study assessed the knowledge of lead poisoning hazards and the rate of utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE)among battery technicians in Lagos, Nigeria. Methods: This study was a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design. Multistage and systematic sampling technique was used to select N=384 adult battery technicians aged 18 years old and higher. The questionnaire was validated and the reliability established through pilot study. Data were collected and analyzed with chi-square and multiple logistic regressions statistical model using SPSS version 24.No missing N value and hypotheses were tested at p < 0.05 and 95% confidence interval. Results: Few participants, 9.9% had good knowledge of lead poisoning hazards, and it indicates a poor level. The rate of utilization of PPE at the workplaces was 18 % which is low. Chi-square analysis of the knowledge of lead poisoning hazard and PPE utilization for battery technicians in the organized and roadside settings were X2=0.1481, p=0.7003, and X²=3.2607, p=0.0709, respectively which isnot statistically significant. Conclusion: Knowledge of lead poisoning hazard influenced the rate of utilization of PPE at the workplace of battery technicians. So, an effort to improve the use of PPE could be done through implementation of occupational safety policy, training and dissemination of information on the threat of lead poisoning for battery technicians to achieve positive behavioral change.

Aims: To examine Tenement housing and domestic conflict among Residents in Rivers State, Nigeria Study Design:  Cross-sectional survey design Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out in Mile 1 and Mile 2 Diobu, Port Harcourt Methodology: Triangulation methodology was used in this study to obtain insight into the problem. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used.  With the quantitative method data were collected using questionnaire and with the qualitative method data was collected using FGM and interviews with respondents. Probability design involving a simple random sampling technique was used. Results: The result revealed an existing relationship between the common use of the toilet, bathroom, kitchen etc. and conflict among dwellers of tenement houses Furthermore it was revealed that there was a relationship between overpopulation and conflict among tenement house dwellers and that there is a relationship between tenement house pattern and conflict among dwellers. Conclusion: It was concluded that a comprehensive approach should be employed to continuously check quality in housing structures and allocation. Also, realistic policies that will alleviate the suffering of Nigerians as it pertains to housing should be enacted and implemented.
