Solar radiation may be shielded by the terrain relief before reaching the Martian surface, especially over some rugged terrains. Yet, to date, no comprehensive studies on the spatial structure of shielded astronomical solar radiation (SASR) and the possible sunshine duration (PSD) on Mars have been conducted by previous researchers. Previous studies generally ignored the influences of the terrain on the SASR and PSD, which resulted in a corresponding unexplored field on SASR. The purpose of this paper is to study the Martian spatial-temporal structure of SASR and the PSD under terrain influences. In this paper, the theory of Earth’s SASR, the previous Martian SASR model and the theory of planetary science were combined to propose the SASR model that can be applied to Mars. Then, with the spectrum method theory of geography, we defined two new concepts of spectrums to explore the spatial-temporal distribution of SASR and PSD in different Martian landforms. We found SASR and PSD on Mars were significantly influenced by terrain relief and latitude and showed sufficient regularity, which can be concluded as a gradual attenuation with terrain relief and a regularity of latitude anisotropy. The latitude anisotropy feature is a manifestation of the terrain shielding effect. With the latitude varying, SASR and PSD at different temporal scale generally showed different features with those of Earth, which may be attributed to the imbalanced seasons caused by Martian moving orbits and velocity. Compared to PSD, SASR showed more regular variation under terrain relief and was more influenced by the terrain relief which revealed that SASR is more sensitive to terrain relief than PSD. Additionally, the critical area is a quantitative index to reflect the stable spatial structure of SASR and PSD in different landforms and may be viewed as the minimum test region of sample areas. The corresponding result of the experiments herein indicated that either spectrum can effectively depict the spatial-temporal distribution of SASR and PSD on Mars under terrain relief and deepen the understanding of the variation of SASR and PSD influences by terrain. The critical area of either spectrum can be employed to explore and determine the stable spatial structure of SASR and PSD in different landforms. The proposed Martian SASR model and the new spectral method theory shed new light on revealing the spatial-temporal structure of SASR and PSD under terrain influences on Mars.

A dynamic film model is developed in the parallel CFD code GASFLOW-MPI for passive containment cooling system (PCCS) utilized in nuclear power plant like AP1000 and CAP1400. GASFLOW-MPI is a widely validated parallel CDF code and has been applied to containment thermal hydraulics safety analysis for different types of reactors. The essential issue for PCCS is the heat removal capability. Research shows that film evaporation contributes most to the heat removal capability for PCCS. In this study, the film evaporation model is validated with separate effect test conducted on the EFFE facility by Pisa University. The test region is a rectangle gap with 0.1m width, 2m length, and 0.6m depth. The water film flowing from the top of the gap is heated by a heating plate with constant temperature and cooled by countercurrent air flow at the same time. The test region model is built and analyzed, through which the total thermal power and evaporation rate are obtained to compare with experimental data. Numerical result shows good agreement with the experimental data. Besides, the influence of air velocity, wall temperature and gap widths are discussed in our study. Result shows that, the film evaporation has a positive correlation with air velocity, wall temperature and gap width. This study can be fundamental for our further numerical study on PCCS.

Synthetic fuels such as Fischer-Tropsch (FT) fuels are of interest as a replacement for aviation, diesel, and other petroleum-based fuels, and the present paper outlines a joint program to study the combustion behavior of FT synthetic fuels. To this end, shock-tube spray and high-recirculation combustion rig experiments are being utilized to study the ignition delay times, formation of soot, and emissions of FT jet fuels. Undiluted shock tube spray experiments were conducted using a recently developed heterogeneous technique wherein the fuel is sprayed directly into the test region of a shock tube. The high recirculation combustion rig is a complete gas turbine system where Syntroleum FT jet fuel was combusted, and soot formation and emission characteristics were observed. Reduction of soot volume fraction and unchanged emissions were observed, in agreement with previous investigations. The fundamental shock tube results were found to be consistent with the observations made in the experimental engine.

AbstractWe present preliminary results from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS) Test Region and Parkes data. As part of the pilot project for the Southern Galactic Plane Survey, observations of a Test Region (325·5° ≤l ≤ 333·5°; −0·5° ≤ b ≤ 3·5°) were completed in December 1998. Single-dish observations of the full survey region (253° ≤ l ≤ 358 ° |b| ≤ 1°) with the Parkes Radio Telescope were completed in March 2000. We present a sample of SGPS H I data, with particular attention to the smallest-and largest-scale structures seen in absorption and emission, respectively. On the large scale, we detect many prominent H I shells. On the small scale, we note extremely compact, cold clouds seen in H I self-absorption. We explore how these two classes of objects probe opposite ends of the H I spatial power spectrum.

The swelling rock slope reinforced by geogrid with wrapped face was one of reinforced methods in the swelling rock test region of main canal in South-to-North Water Division Project, the key step was the geogrid with wrapped face in layer by layer, which was not only the core step to make sure the reinforced swelling rock slope with geogrid as a integrality, but also the most complex, time consuming and cost in the whole process. From the in situ test, the construction technology and related construction parameters of geogrid of simplified face to reinforce the swelling rock slope was obtained, in which the construction of geogrid with wrapped face was optimized, the construction progress was improved and its cost was reduced, which contributed to the generalization and application of geogrid with simplified wrapped face to reinforce swelling rock slope in the middle-route of South-to-North Water Division Project, meanwhile, it was provided as a references for similar engineering.

Purpose A numerical study on the reliability of soldered interconnects of c-Si solar photovoltaic cells has been conducted. Design/methodology/approach A three-year data (2012–2014) from outdoor weathering of PV modules was used to generate temperature cycle profiles to serve as thermal loads and boundary conditions for the investigation of the thermo-mechanical response of the soldered interconnects when subjected to real outdoor conditions using finite element analysis (FEA) Software (Ansys. 18.2). Two types of soldered interconnections, namely, Sn60Pb40 and Sn3.8Ag0.7Cu (Pb-free), were modelled in this study. Findings Life prediction results from accumulated creep energy density damage show that the solder interconnects will achieve maximum life under the 2014 thermal cycle loading. In particular, the Sn60Pb40 solder interconnection is expected to achieve 14,153 cycles (25.85 years) whilst the Pb-free solder interconnection is expected to achieve 9,249 cycles (16.89 years). Additionally, under the test region average (TRA) thermal cycle, the Pb-free and Pb-Sn solder interconnections are expected to achieve 7,944 cycles (13.69 years) and 12,814 cycles (23.4 years), respectively. The study shows that Sn60Pb40 solder interconnections are likely to exhibit superior reliability over the Pb-free solder interconnections at the test site. Practical implications This study would be useful to electronics manufacturing industry in the search for a suitable alternative to SnPb solders and also the thermo-mechanical reliability research community and manufacturers in the design of robust PV modules. Originality/value The study has provided TRA data/results which could be used to represent the test region instead of a particular year. The study also indicates that more than six thermal cycles are required before any meaningful conclusions can be drawn. Finally, the life of the two types of solders (SnPb and Pb-free) as interconnecting materials for c-Si PV have been predicted for the test region (Kumasi in sub-Saharan Africa).

1. Intracellular recordings have been made from cat retinal horizontal cells stimulated with flickering test spots. Dim backgrounds increase flicker amplitudes in response to small but not large test stimuli. 2. This background-induced flicker enhancement has been measured for different slit- and square-test stimulus widths and the results compared with two spatial models for the enhancement effect. 3. In the "dark test-region" model it is argued that rods within the test region are unresponsive to background stimuli because of prior saturation by the test stimulus. Background-evoked rod signals decay passively from regions outside the test stimulus through a syncytial network into the recording site, where they act on the cone-to-horizontal-cell synapse, increasing its gain. 4. In the "changing length-constant" model rod signals reduce the length constant of a syncytial network by uncoupling the cells within it. This causes an increased response to small but not large test stimuli. 5. Both models are analytically evaluated with the use of a conductive-sheet approximation to the syncytial network. Expressions are derived for network polarization [(V(0, 0)] as a function of stimulus size. The specific stimulus shapes considered are disks, rectangles, slits, and squares in both bright and dark varieties. From these expressions predictions of response enhancement as a function of stimulus size are made for both models. 6. The dark test-region model provides for an exponential decay of flicker enhancement as a function of slit width but a steeper-than-exponential decay with the width of squares, in close agreement with experimental data. 7. The changing length-constant model makes qualitatively similar predictions. Flicker enhancement declines nearly exponentially with slit width. For square-shaped test stimuli the predicted decline of flicker enhancement with size is somewhat shallower than either the dark test-region-model curve or the experimentally determined curve. 8. As recorded in the same set of cells and under the same set of stimulus conditions (with the use of both slit- and square-test stimuli), the mean length constant of the peak-to-peak flicker component in the horizontal-cell response is 168 +/- 18 (SE) microns with the background and 232 +/- 45 microns in the dark. The mean length constant for the background-induced flicker enhancement, as fit by dark test-region-model curves, is 186 +/- 22 microns (n = 9).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
