It has been reported that productivity developments in construction are slow compared to other sectors. Measuring productivity is however not easy and it might have been underestimated due to deficiencies in the index that is used when the value added in current prices is converted into value added at constant prices. A central problem when deflating nominal prices is that the deflation should only take away price changes for identical products and not price changes related to quality changes and improvements necessitated by new environmental conditions and legislation as well as demand for higher safety. The aim of this project is to help fill this gap by looking at the quality changes over time in road construction. A combination of comparative studies and interviews with practitioners from public and private sectors that are involved in road construction projects were conducted. It was found that there had been both direct quality changes in the roads, primarily to improve safety on the roads and for noise protection, and indirect quality changes related to building in more difficult circumstances because of giving higher weight to other social objectives, especially environmental objectives. As these quality increases are not taken into account when productivity is measured, productivity improvements could be underestimated by around 1% per year.

Gross Regional Domestic Product is as the amount of value-added (add value) that are generated by the entire production unit or in a region or the entire amount is the value of final goods and services produced by the economy of the entire unit within a region in a given period, either on the basis of rates in force or on the basis of constant prices. One GRP District of Kebumen is a sector of trade, hotels and restaurants which is an important part of the calculation and the increasing economic growth each year has increased, although not significantly.On the trade sector, the hotel and restaurant viewed from the results of analysis calculation on equation trend for certain years have elevated the quality of the year 2008 amounting to 583, 253.02 in 2009 amounted to 651, 473.61, then increment level trends in2010 719, 694.20, while for the year 2011 for the highest rate of increase in trends, namely of 856, 135.38, then in 2012 has increased the trend 355.97 924, and 2013 for trends 992,576.56.The result of the analysis of the Gross Domestic Product has increased fromKebumen Regency, trade, hotels and restaurants on the basis of the applicable rates in 2008-2013.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that affect TQM implementation in construction companies and it suggests solutions for TQM implementation in a difficult environment. Design/methodology/approach Studies were carried out at six large construction companies who ply their trade in Southern Africa and in-depth investigations were conducted to assess TQM implementation practices and associated TQM barriers. Interviews were conducted on directors and key personnel that play important roles in TQM implementation in their respective organisations. The empirical study also utilised a number of organisational documents which added rigour to the findings. Findings This study identified three core categories and ten main barriers affecting TQM implementation in Southern Africa construction companies. The core categories are motivation, infrastructure and penchants and tendencies while the factors are lack of quality support, poor TQM knowledge and TQM awareness, poor information sharing, temporary workers, overdependence on contract document, poor data collection measurement, undefined TQM roles and responsibilities, award to lowest bidder tendency, poor business environment and corruption. Research limitations/implications The study was conducted based on companies plying their trade in Southern Africa and mostly around Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique. It does not study companies in Namibia, Zimbabwe, Angola, South Africa and Botswana. Practical implications TQM cannot be exported wholly from another region to a new setting without taking into consideration the local factors associated with that setting. For successful TQM implementation in construction in Southern Africa, characteristics of this region have to be known. This study illuminates a number of TQM implementation barriers associated with construction especially applied to this difficult environment. Application of this knowledge would enhance TQM and heighten competitive advantage initiatives. The proportions highlighted in this study therefore help build up the TQM implementation awareness. Social implications At society level, the findings of this study indicate societal problems such as corruption and business environment which require wide level approaches to deal with these barriers. In addition, if TQM applied in road construction projects, the quality of the roads will be improved, this in turn will have direct impact on quality of life in the society, better roads means easier access to hospitals, schools and public places, better transport and movements of goods and services, etc. It can also save money for the country in long run and economic benefits to the society. Originality/value The factors identified in this study are based on current TQM implementation practices at established construction companies in Southern Africa. They provide a practical basis for guiding TQM in construction companies operating in difficult environments.

 The continuous acceleration of urban construction and the quality of highway construction projects has received an extensive attention, predominantly on asphalt pavement construction. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a high-quality supervision, good management and technical operation as well as maintenance control mechanism in conjunction with the construction environment to ensure a success on road construction to be carried out smoothly and be able to achieve an advance level in the optimization goal of asphalt pavement construction management. This paper focuses on the technical points and management points of asphalt pavement construction, aiming to provide more intuitive data for the construction management department to improve the overall quality of asphalt pavement construction.

Road traffic accidents are a menace to a developing country such as Kenya. The National Transport and Safety Authority website records over 57,171 cases of road traffic accidents NTSA [15]. Adopting the root cause analysis technique, it is crucial to determine and to solve the cause of a problem in order to have a permanent solution for it. This study focuses on road construction projects which are the actual onset of road traffic accidents. Occurrences of road traffic accidents are dependent on various factors ranging from the ideology of road construction projects to the operation of a sound or unsound vehicle on the road. Numerous studies have been done to research on the factors influencing quality of road construction projects but little has been done to determine how contractors related factors affect quality of road construction projects. Due to the research gap in the pool of knowledge, this study is aimed at identifying and analyzing how contractor’s exposure to technology influences the quality of road construction projects. The study area that was analyzed in this project was Machakos sub-county situated in the Lower Eastern region of Kenya. The study was guided by the objective: to establish influence of contractor’s exposure to technology on quality of road construction projects. This study applied Systems theory approach. A descriptive survey research design and a cross-sectional approach was used to collect quantitative data by use of close-ended questionnaires. The total target population was 223and a calculative formula adopted from Kothari [8] was used to acquire a sample size of 141 respondents. Stratified random sampling technique was applied on the sample size of 141 respondents to classify them into homogenous groups. Questionnaires were used as the main data collection instruments and were issued to the respondents. The gathered data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics with the data being presented descriptively using frequencies and percentages. Pearson’s product moment correlation procedure method was used to analyze the inferential statistic data and the results presented. In this study Spearman’s was used to measure the degree of association between the independent and dependent variables. On the influence of contractor’s exposure to technology, a composite mean of 3.74, standard deviation of 1.028 and a strong correlation value of 0.373 were achieved. The survey elicit conclusion was that quality of road construction projects in Machakos Sub-County was influenced by the independent variable.

The number of contractor companies, especially in the field of roads every year continues to increase. Based on data obtained from LPJK website (Construction Services Development Agency) Province of Aceh Year 2016, shows that from 2,717 road contractors in Aceh Province, 1% of them are big qualification, 10% middle qualification and 89% small qualification. The problem is from the increasing number of road contractor companies in Aceh Province, it has not been followed by an increase in qualification and performance. These improvements can be seen from the quality of work, the timeliness of completion of implementation, and the efficiency of resource utilization of personnel, capital, and technology. This study aims to analyze the relationship and influence between contractor's qualification factors on the quality of road construction project, and to know the dominant factor in contractor company's qualification affecting the quality of road construction project in Banda Aceh City. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods through questionnaires, where the respondents were addressed to 90 road contractor companies. The contractor company has implemented projects from 2010-2016, with funding sources from APBA. The independent variables reviewed are contractor qualification factors consisting of legal factors, technical factors, and administrative factors, while the dependent variable is the quality of road construction projects. The results show that the legal, technical and administrative factors all have a very high relationship to the quality of road construction projects in Banda Aceh City. The contractor's qualifying factors all have a significant effect on the quality of road construction projects in Kota Banda Aceh of 91.6%. The dominant factor in the qualification of contractor companies affecting the quality of road construction projects in Banda Aceh is the technical factor. This suggests that when engineering factors are improved by contractors, the quality of road construction projects will increase.

Cost overrun in construction projects is a common phenomenon in Iraq. This might occur due to diversity of factors. This study aims to identify the factors influencing construction projects cost that are potentially controllable by main contractors. A field study through a questionnaire survey was directed to a sample of related Iraqi professional engineers from general contracting companies at both public and private sectors. Their opinions on the impact and frequency of each factor were investigated. The questionnaire offered (59) factors classified in (8) categories namely; legislations, financial and economic, design, contractual, site management, material, labor and equipment. The factors were ranked according to the highest Relative Importance Index (RII). The study revealed (10) major factors that are potentially controllable by main contractors namely; labor productivity, sub-contractors and suppliers performance, equipment productivity, site organization and distribution of equipment, experience and training of project managers, scheduling and control techniques, planning for materials supply, planning for equipment supply, materials delivery and planning for skilled labor recruitment. Recommendations to aid contractors and owners in early identification of these factors are also included in this study.

Background: Ever since quality of services is gaining importance in every industry as it is the indicator of consumer/customer satisfaction, it is of utmost importance to measure service quality of educational institutes to determine the satisfaction of students. Thus, the study aimed to determine the important factors in service quality dimensions which contribute to the satisfaction of students. Methods: This was a Comparative Cross Sectional study in which final year department of physical therapy (DPT) students were included from three private and three public physiotherapy institutes. Results: The largest mean Positive Gap scores for Public Physiotherapy Institutes was 0.18 for accessibility and affordability 0.18. The largest negative mean gap score for Private Physiotherapy domain was “Accessibility and Affordability” found to be -1.96. Conclusion: Students were satisfied with service quality of private institutes in all domains except for the “Accessibility and Affordability” whereas, in Public Institutes largest negative quality gaps were found in “Empathy” and “Assurance”.

Platformization affects the entire urban transport sector, effectively blurring the division between private and public transport modalities; existing public–private arrangements have started to shift as a result. This chapter analyzes and discusses the emergence of a platform ecology for urban transport, focusing on two central public values: the quality of urban transport and the organization of labor and workers’ rights. Using the prism of platform mechanisms, it analyzes how the sector of urban transport is changing societal organization in various urban areas across the world. Datafication has allowed numerous new actors to offer their bike-, car-, or ride-sharing services online; selection mechanisms help match old and new complementors with passengers. Similarly, new connective platforms are emerging, most prominently transport network companies such as Uber and Lyft that offer public and private transport options, as well as new platforms offering integrated transport services, often referred to as “mobility as a service.”
