The aim of the research was to investigate the psychological role and significance of artistic creative expression in older age through the personal experience of people who paint or mold as a hobby. Seven participants (six female and one male), aged 65-69, took part in the research. A qualitative research method, i.e. a semi-structured interview, was used to get a deep insight into the psychological role and significance of artistic creative expression in older age. Based on the qualitative analysis of the participants’ answers related to the psychological role and significance of artistic creative expression in older age, six subcategories were distinguished (artistic expression as an adaptive way of dealing with stressful life situations; the presence of pleasant emotions during art creation; creative potential development; motivation for learning and advancement in art, the improvement of the quality of social life, increasing self-confidence while being involved in art and teaching art techniques to others) which indicate that artistic expression in older age contributes to the development of emotional stability, creative potential, maintenance of cognitive functions (learning, memory, thinking and attention), prevention of cognitive impairment, improving the quality of social life and increasing the self-confidence of the elderly.

Introduction. Due to the prolonged average life span and constantly increasing number of the elderly, research of this population’s quality of life (QoL) is being conducted to assess the spheres requiring improvement. Aim. To assess and compare the life quality in different domains between residents of nursing homes (NH) and patients of the Psychogeriatric Day Ward (PDW).Material and Methods. The study encompassed 68 PDW patients and 62 NH residents. The WHOQOL‑BREF questionnaire and a structured interview concerning diseases, different forms of support and activities preferred were used. Results. Women predominated among the subjects (83%). The elderly aged 75–90 constituted the majority (64.62%). The average assessment of QoL in the whole group amounted to 3.6 points. No significant differences in the assessment of QoL satisfaction and one’s own health satisfaction were observed between PDW patients and NH residents. The participants of both groups assessed the highest QoL in the environment domain and the lowest in the social relationships domain. A relationship between higher QoL in the physical health domain and participation in social forms of spending free time was observed. Relationships between QoL in particular domains and age, marital status and length of stay in NH were found.Conclusions. Elderly people’s QoL, similarly to their satisfaction with health, were on an average level regardless of the institutional care. The QoL remains in a significant relationship with health. The changing needs of the elderly should be the basis for creating an individual plan of professional support.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the oral health status and socio-economic conditions of the elderly, which are users of the Brazilian Unified Public Health System (SUS) and its relationship to a subjective indicator of impacts of oral conditions on quality of life (Oral Health Impact Profile OHIP-14). METHODS: It is a descriptive cross-sectional exploratory study developed in the second semester of 2011. The sample consisted of 76 elderly (65-74 years old) users of the public dental service at the Dental Specialties Center at the Faculty of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. The methodological strategy adopted for data collection was the structured interview and secondary data were obtained from medical records and reports. To perform the statistical analysis it was used an exploratory analysis of multivariate data by means of STATA Software. RESULTS: The frequencies of the dimensions of the OHIP-14 with the greatest impact were pain (13.16%) and psychological distress (14.47%). The low impact association was represented by social disability (71%) and social disadvantage (63%). The gender, type of housing, necessity and prosthesis wearing were not associated with measures of quality of life related to oral health. It was observed a good correlation between the perception (r = 0.542, p <0.001), a moderate association between higher income (r = 0.28, p <0.01) and the scores of the OHIP. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the elderly which reported good self-perception of oral health and good income have expressed the perception that oral health reflects a good impact on quality of life.

AbstractThe issue of the quality of life considering patients with a temporary or permanent intestinal stoma, as well as the necessity for chronic parenteral nutrition at home remain a poorly understood problem. Daily care of the intestinal stoma and the need to comply with sterile procedures required for parenteral nutrition require such patients to commit their time, which secondarily is associated with the broad aspects of social and personal life. The aim of the study was to analyse the quality of life considering patients with intestinal stomas subjected to chronic parenteral nutrition, before and after gastrointestinal tract continuity restoration.Material and methods. The survey was conducted between May and July, 2014 on a group of 71 patients (33 female and 38 male) who were under the care of the Department of General Surgery and Clinical Nutrition, Warsaw Medical University, operated during the period between 2007 and July, 2014 with a present stoma (32 patients - 45%), as well as after stoma closure (39 patients - 55%). The analysed questionnaire contained 31 questions, and the SF-36 questionnaire was additionally used, determining the quality of life.Results. Analysis of the study material showed differences in the quality of life, considering three most important determinants. Significantly worse assessment of the quality of life was reported by patients with a stoma and subject to intravenous nutrition (83.2±30.5), as compared to those after stoma closure subject to normal nutrition (52.3±33.8). Based on the SF-36 questionnaire differences between patients with a stoma and those without amounted to t(69)=2.84 (p=0.006) demonstrating that those with a stoma reported a lower quality of life. Analysis between younger and older patients, based on the SF-36 questionnaire (t(62.87)=2.49; p=0.016) showed that younger patients achieved lower results, considering dissatisfaction with life (61.55±27.5), as compared to the elderly (80.8±36.9).Conclusions. The group of patients without a stoma seem to be more independent- the vast majority do not use the help of family members (43.6%), or friends (64.1%). Patients with a stoma more often withdraw from social life. The factor that mostly reduces the quality of life is the presence of a stoma, which impairs daily functioning a lot more than the sterile procedures associated with parenteral nutrition. All patients after stoma closure consider that their overall functioning has significantly improved.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess the level of perceived health and quality of life of elderly prisoners in France, and to see whether there is a link between aging, time spent in prison and level of education and scores for perceived health and quality of life. Design/methodology/approach The authors’ recruited 138 male prisoners aged 50 and over in seven French prisons. The research protocol comprised a semi-structured interview and two scales. Findings The results revealed low levels of perceived health and quality of life among the elderly inmates. They also showed that age was not statistically associated with most of the dimensions of perceived health on the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP), with the exception of poor mobility. By contrast, age was statistically associated with most of the dimensions of quality of life on the WHOQOL-Bref. Time spent in prison was only associated negatively with the “sleep” dimension of the NHP. Emotional reactions were perceived most positively by the inmates with the highest level of education. Practical implications It seems particularly important to assess the perceived health and quality of life of elderly prisoners in order to ensure their appropriate treatment and management. Originality/value Very few studies have examined the perceived health and quality of life of prisoners, even though this population is particularly vulnerable in terms of physical and mental health.
