A 42- day experiment was conducted to evaluate the response of grower rabbits fed cooked sunflower seed meal (SFSM) supplemented with enzyme on nutrient digestibility and blood parameters using 72 growing rabbits. Nine diets namely T1 to T9 were compounded to be isocaloric (2500 kcal/kg, ME) and isonitrogenous (15%) with treatments T1, T2 and T3 having 0% inclusion rate of SFS meal and 0PPM, 150PPM and 250PPM of the enzyme supplementation. Treatments T4 to T6 and T7 to T9 had 10 and 20% levels of SFS meal inclusion rate respectively but maintaining same levels of enzyme supplementation as in T1 to T3. This arrangement translated to T1, T4 and T7 serving as the control diets for T2 and T3, T5 and T6 and T8 to T9, respectively. The rabbits were allotted to the three levels of SFS meal (0,10 and 20%) and three levels of enzyme supplementation (0,150, and 250PPM) in a 3x3 factorial arrangement of a completely randomized design (CRD) to produce nine treatment diets. The treatments were replicated four times. Crude fibre, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre and cellulose were significantly (P<0.05) higher in rabbit fed 20% (84.58%, 72.24%, 67.16% and 64.27%) SFS diet than 0% (64.20%, 66.68%, 59.40% and 57.81%) and 10% (76.88%, 70.63%, 64.04% and 61.90%) respectively. Enzyme supplementation significantly (P<0.05) improved RBC, the values increased from 5.23 x1012/l for non-enzyme supplementation to 5.38 -5.73 x1012/l. Red blood cell and was significantly (P<0.05) lower in rabbits fed T4 diet than the other groups. Similarly, haemoglobin (11.42 vs. 11.37 and 12.01 g/dl), cholesterol (3.83 vs. 4.33 and 4.31mmol/l) and triglyceride (0.95 vs. 1.16 and 1.03mmol/l) were improved (P<0.05) as the level of enzyme supplementation increased in the diets. In view of the significant improvement in nutrient digestibility and some of the blood parameters recorded, rabbit farmers can use the 150 PPM of the enzyme in SFS meal based diets without affecting the nutrient digestibility and health of the rabbits.   Une expérience de 42 jours a été menée pour évaluer la réponse de lapins en croissance nourris avec de la farine de graines de 'sunflower' cuite (le 'SFSM') supplémentée en enzyme sur la digestibilité des nutriments et les paramètres sanguins en utilisant 72 lapins en croissance. Neuf régimes à savoir T1 à T9 ont été composés pour être iso caloriques (2500 kcal / kg, ME) et iso nitrogènes (15%) avec les traitements T1, T2 et T3 ayant un taux d'inclusion de 0% de repas 'SFS' et '0PPM', 150PPM et 250PPM de la supplémentation enzymatique. Les traitements T4 à T6 et T7 à T9 avaient respectivement 10 et 20% de taux d'inclusion de repas SFS, mais conservaient les mêmes niveaux de supplémentation enzymatique que dans T1 à T3. Cet arrangement traduit en T1, T4 et T7 servant de régimes de contrôle pour T2 et T3, T5 et T6 et T8 à T9, respectivement. Les lapins ont été attribués aux trois niveaux de repas SFS (0,10 et 20%) et à trois niveaux de supplémentation enzymatique (0,150 et 250 PPM) dans un arrangement factoriel 3x3 d'une conception complètement randomisée (CRD) pour produire neuf régimes de traitement. Les traitements ont été répétés quatre fois : les fibres brutes, les fibres détergentes neutres, les fibres détergentes acides et la cellulose étaient significativement plus élevées (P <0,05) chez le lapin nourri à 20% (84,58%, 72,24%, 67,16% et 64,27%) régime 'SFS' que 0% (64,20%, 66,68%, 59,40% et 57,81%) et 10% (76,88%, 70,63%, 64,04% et 61,90%) respectivement. La supplémentation enzymatique a considérablement amélioré (P <0,05) les globules rouges, les valeurs ont augmenté de 5,23 x 1012 / l pour la supplémentation non enzymatique à 5,38 -5,73 x 1012 / l Les globules rouges étaient significativement (P <0,05) plus bas chez les lapins nourris au régime T4 que les autres groupes. De même, l'hémoglobine (11,42 vs 11,37 et 12,01 g / dl), le cholestérol (3,83 vs 4,33 et 4,31 mmol / l) et les triglycérides (0,95 vs 1,16 et 1,03 mmol / l) ont été améliorés (P <0,05) à mesure que le niveau de supplémentation enzymatique augmentait dans les régimes. A cause de l'amélioration significative de la digestibilité des nutriments et de certains des paramètres hématologiques enregistrés, les éleveurs de lapins peuvent utiliser les 150 PPM de l'enzyme dans les régimes à base de repas 'SFS' sans poser aucun problème à la digestibilité des nutriments et la santé des lapins.

Rabbits are known to be highly prolific animals with short gestation period and can thrive well on cheaper and available alternative feeds such as castor seeds especially when properly processed and supplemented with the right additive. Twenty weaner composite rabbits weighing approximately 660.45±12.05g/rabbit were utilized in an experiment to evaluate effect of toasted castor seed meal (TCSM) on growth and blood parameters of grower rabbits supplemented with quantum blue® enzyme. The rabbits were allotted to four isonitrogenous (15% crude protein) and isocaloric (2850kcal/kg, ME) diets with two levels (0 and 30%) of TCSM and two levels of enzymes (0 and 100PPM) in a 2X2 factorial arrangement of a Completely Randomized Design. Growth parameters and blood constituents were measured. The results obtained showed that all the growth parameters evaluated were not significantly (P>0.05) influenced by enzyme supplementation except for initial weight which was significantly (P<0.05) reduced (1818.75 vs. 1368.75 g/rabbit). Similarly, inclusion of TCSM significantly (P<0.05) reduced initial (1862.50 vs. 1325.00 g/rabbit) and final (2112.50 vs. 1204.17 g/rabbit) weights of the rabbits. Also, there was significant improvement (P<0.05) in serum calcium (3.00 mmol/L), creatinine (82.67mg/L) and albumin concentration (25.67 vs. 30.67 and 25.33 g/L) in rabbits fed high TCSM and enzyme supplementation. In conclusion, inclusion of 30% TCSM supplemented with quantum blue ®enzyme at 100 ppm reduced the effect of TCSM on the animals and improves acceptance, absorption and utilization of feed by grower rabbits without compromising their health status.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of thyme essential oil and enzyme supplementation on rations with two different energy (wheat or corn) and protein resources (soy or rapeseed meals) on gut morphology and protein digestibility of broiler chickens. Three hundred eighty-four male Ross-308 broiler chickens were used with a 23 factorial arrangement with treatments according to a completely randomized design. The morphological examinations of the intestine were carried out on 1-cm long excised segments from duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Adding wheat to the diet increased small intestine length in birds compared to other feedstuffs (P <0.05). Duodenum crypt depth and jejunum villi length were also higher in groups fed with rations containing wheat (P <0.05). Groups that received thyme essential oil and enzyme supplementation had increased length of the duodenum (P <0.05). However, the two- and three-factor interaction effects were not significant. Protein digestibility was not affected by treatment (P >0.05). Feeding wheat to broiler chickens may increase the surface area for nutrient absorption in the small intestine as compensation for the anti-nutritive activity of non-starch polysaccharides in wheat-based diets. Wheat based diets are expected to be acceptable for broilers when supplemented with appropriate enzymes or thyme essential oil.

Dry matter intake, nutrient digestibility and some rumen and blood metabolites were investigated in goats fed five diets composed of cassava peel and brewer's dried grains (BDG) in the ratios of approximately 82:8, 69:20, 57:33, 44:45 and 32:58. Urea and molasses were included in each diet at 2% and 7.5% respectively and the crude protein levels of the diets were approximately 8%, 11%, 14%, 17% and 20%. There were no significant (P > 0.05) differences in Dry matter and Organic matter intake but N intake Increased up to Diet 4. There were dietary effects on the digestibility of DM, N, crude fibre, acid detergent fibre, either extract, nitrogen free extract and energy but not 0M. The highest digestibility values were obtained on diet 4 for most of the nutrients. The concentrations of rumen ammonia and blood plasma urea increased from Diet 1 to Diet 5. There were significant (P < 0.05) dietary effect on rumen fluid ph. Rumen protozoal count increased from Diet 1 to Diet 5. The depression in digestibility of Diet 5 would indicate that BDG should not be included at up to 58% in the diet of goats.

This study investigated the use of cooked sunflower seed meal as soybean meal replacer in Clarias gariepinus diet in a 56-day feeding trial using growth performance, nutrient utilization, body composition, digestibility, haematology and liver histology as indices of assessment. Sunflower seed meal was cooked for 10, 20 and 30 minutes. Each of the differently cooked sunflower seed meal replaced soybean meal portion of control diet at 15, 30 and 45% to produce nine 40% crude protein, 18kj/kg test diets. A diet without sunflower meal served as the control. Triplicate groups of fish in 70-litre capacity aerated rectangular plastic tanks were alloted to each dietary treatment at a stocking rate of 15 fingerlings (3.72±0.22g average weight) per tank in a completely randomized design. Fish were fed to satiation. Data obtained from the experiment were subjected to statistical analysis. The results of the experiment revealed that up to 30% replacement level of 10- and 20-minutes cooked sunflower produced a statistically similar results with soybean-based control diets.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of fermented and toasted Albizia lebbeck seed meal (FTALSM), on the growth performance and nutrient digestibility of broiler chickens at the starter and finisher phases. One hundred and fifty (150) day old chicks (Abo acres) were used for this study and were divided into five treatments (with three replicate each containing 10 birds) using a completely randomized design (CRD) for eight weeks. The treatments were five diets containing 0% (control), 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% of fermented and toasted Albizia lebbeck seed meal (FTALSM), respectively and were tagged Diet 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. The diets were formulated to be isocaloric and isonitrogenous. The feed intake at the starter phase was significantly higher (p<0.05) in Diets 3 and 4 which had 10 and 15% inclusion of FTALSM, respectively. Diets 2, 3 and 4 also differ significantly (p<0.05) in final body weight and total weight gained from the control diets. The results at the finisher phase indicated that, there were significant differences (P<0.05) in all the parameters measured except for mortality. Birds fed Diet 2 performed significantly better in weight gain (1453g) and feed intake (3087.25g) compared to the control group. Birds on the control and Diet 2 had similar feed efficiency, the values were however, better than those on the other treatments. The results of nutrient digestibility showed birds fed Diet 5 (20% FTALSM) recorded significantly (P<0.05) low digestibility values in all parameters measured. The results showed that fermentation and toasting reduced phytase, oxalate and cyanide by 41.87, 26.67 and 99.94 % respectively. It can be concluded therefore, that FTALSM can be included up to 15 % in broiler chickens starter diets and 5 % in the finisher diet for optimum growth performance.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate diet digestibility, performance, digestive parameters, and blood parameters when an enzyme complex (EC) was used in barley- and rye-based diets with different energy levels. In the digestibility assay (exp. I), 108 seventeen-day-old Cobb male broilers were distributed in a completely randomized design in 2 × 2 × 2 + 1 factorial arrangement with two feeds (barley or rye), two EC levels (0% and 0.02%), and two energy levels [3025 and 3125 kcal apparent metabolizable energy (AME)·kg−1], plus a control treatment. In exp. II, 1080 one-day-old Cobb male broilers were distributed in a completely randomized design in 2 × 2 × 2 + 1 factorial arrangement with two feeds (barley or rye), two EC levels (0% and 0.02%), and two energy levels (2875 and 2975 kcal AME·kg−1). No interactions were observed for any variables (exp. I and II). Enzyme complex improved the apparent metabolizable coefficient of gross energy (P = 0.0432) of diets. The EC provided greater weight gain (P = 0.0003) and better feed conversion (P = 0.0025). Intestinal viscosity at 21 d was reduced (P < 0.0001) with the addition of the EC. The EC improved nutrient digestibility and performance, but the effects of energy reduction on performance could not be overcome.

The potential of sugarcane peels as a substitute for maize offal in rabbit diets and its effect on growth, nutrient digestibility, and carcass characteristics were studied. Twenty five growing rabbits of mixed breeds and average body weight of 894±26.14g were used in a 7-week feeding trial. Five experimental diets were formulated in which sugarcane rind (SCR) was included at 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40% level to replace maize offal (weight for weight). The rabbits were balanced for weight and allotted to the treatments (n=5 rabbits/treatment) in a completely randomized design. Results obtained indicated that dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, nitrogen free extract, hemicellulose, acid and neutral detergent fibre intake and digestibility decreased with increasing level of sugarcane rind inclusion. Crude fibre intake (5.59-8.67 g/day) and digestibility (20.60-40.80%) however increased (P<0.05) as level of sugarcane rind increased in the diet. The 30% inclusion of sugarcane rind gave body weight gain (5.35 g/d) comparable to the control (6.41 g/d), 10 (7.78 g/d) and 20% (7.12 g/d) inclusion of sugarcane peels. Feed intake (44.61-40.59 g/d) decreased as the level of sugarcane rind increased in the diets. There was no significant (P>0.05) effect of sugarcane rind on metabolic body weight and feed efficiency. Inclusion of sugarcane rind at 30% level increased (P<0.05) thigh and head percentage but without any adverse effect on chest, loin, shoulder and skin. Based on the results, it is concluded that sugarcane rind is a good fibre source that can be used to replace maize offal up to 30% in rabbit diets.

This study was conducted to investigate the performance and nutrient digestibility in broiler chicks as influenced by multi-enzyme (Hemicell +Roxazyme G) addition to starter diets containing palm kernel meal. Nine experimental diets were formulated such that diet 1 which served as control contained 0 % PKM without enzyme supplementation. Diet 2, 3, 4 and 5 contained 10, 20, 30 and 40 % PKM levels respectively with multi-enzyme supplementation while diets 6, 7, 8 and 9 contained 10, 20, 30 and 40 % PKM inclusion levels respectively without multi-enzyme supplementation. Five hundred and forty (540) day old hybro broilers of mixed sex in ratio (1: 1) were randomly assigned to nine diets in a completely randomized design. Each treatment was replicated thrice with 20 birds per replicate. The experiment lasted 35 days. The results showed that nutrient digestibility in the control and 10 % PKM with enzyme supplementation were similar but were significantly (P<0.05) higher than other PKM diets with or without supplementation. There was significant (P<0.05) improvement in body weight and body weight gain and reduce feed intake with supplementation. Birds fed with 20 % PKM with enzyme showed similarity with control birds in all the performance parameters measured. Enzyme addition significantly (P<0.05) reduced cost of feed consumed at 30 % level of inclusion with PKM while cost per kilogram weight gain and cost of production were lower at 20 % PKM level.
