This chapter describes literature about IT investments, and the impact of IT on the performance of a firm. The reason for this study is that effects of IT standards, which are an integral part of IT, will be investigated in several case studies. Supporting the case study analysis, a method will be adopted that is used to assess business performance from IT in general. Business performance in general can be assessed from different angles, such as financial performance, process performance and transaction performance. Literature from various disciplines shows the complexity of and the disagreement as regards measurement and description of business performance. However, it is generally accepted that these impacts can be assessed best at the intermediate level: that of business processes. After the introduction, literature dealing with IT value and business performance will be discussed. Then a specific method, the Balanced Scorecard, will be dealt with and an explanation is given why we used it in this research. This chapter concludes with a look at the concept of flexibility, as part of business performance, and what it means in relation to IT standards.

The financial crisis of the last decade has left many financial institutions with limited personnel and equipment resources. Thus, the IT departments of these institutions are being asked to explore novel approaches to resolve these constraints in a cost-effective and efficient manner. The goal of this paper is to measure the impact of modern enabling technologies, such as virtualization, in the process of replacing legacy infrastructures. This paper proposes an IT services upgrade plan approach for an organization by using modern technologies. For this purpose, research took place in an operating financial institution, which required a significant upgrade of both its service-level and its hardware infrastructure. A virtualization implementation and deployment assessment for the entire infrastructure was conducted and the resulting consolidated data are presented and analysed. The paper concludes with a five-year financial-based evaluation of the proposed approach with respect to the projection of expenditures, the return of investment and profitability.

As the most important capital in today’s global economy, knowledge has replaced physical and financial capitals, and the knowledge-based business environment needs an approach that encompasses new intangible organizational assets. In fact, responses that organizations have given to today’s environments indicate that they must rely on intangible resources that were previously unattended. By asking whether the intellectual capital has an impact on business performance of travel agencies in Shiraz, we seek to prove the effect of intellectual capital components on the performance of these agencies. The required statistics and information were collected and analyzed on the basis of empirical research in Shiraz and using a sample size of 142. According to the findings of this study, there is a significant relationship between intellectual capital and business performance and its components, and all aspects of intellectual capital positively and significantly influence productivity, profitability and reputation of the companies. In fact, it can be said that being aware of the importance of intellectual capital will bring about productivity and a better performance, and on the contrary, not paying enough attention to this important issue will result in poor economic performance.

Purpose A system dynamics (SD)-based methodology is described for analysing the impact of lean manufacturing strategies on a company's business performance, using business model canvas (BMC) perspective. Design/methodology/approach A case study approach is used to describe the methodology which consists of conceptualising a SD model on the basis of BMC. The base SD model is elaborated to include variables and concepts that consider the effects of lean manufacturing metrics on business performance. In the modelling experimentation, the lean manufacturing metrics are made to take on likely values one would expect if certain lean practices are initiated or improved. The experimental results provide one with the likely impact on business performance, if one were to improve lean manufacturing practices. Findings The simulation results for the case study show that lean improvements, on the short-run, have a significant impact on business performance, but in the long run, the impact is only marginal. Research implications/limitations The described methodology provides one with a structured format for investigating the impact of lean practices on business performance. Although the developed SD model was built with generality in mind, it remains to be reproduced in other settings to test its replicability. Practical implications The methodology enables an organisation target which lean improvements to initiate based on their strategic impact on the business. Originality/value Limited studies exist where SD and business models are combined to test the strategic impact of lean manufacturing.

This paper discusses the practices associated with Japanese Manufacturing Management (JMM) which can yield a superior competitive advantage in terms of productivity, quality and provide overall successful business performance. To examine the transfer of the best practices of the JMM locally and obtain the impact of the adoption and adaptation of the JMM, an in-depth case study was conducted in a Malaysian automotive company. This paper also discusses the changes in terms of the philosophy and practices undertaken by the automotive company and ascertain the impact of the JMM on its manufacturing and financial performances. The elements of business performance from the viewpoint of manufacturing based on safety, quality, cost and delivery were quantified and examined. All elements were quantified since the first year of the adoption and viewed over time to track the trend of achievement. The results show a positive impact to the automotive plant manufacturing performance. The results of the financial performance also show the profitability of the plant. The revenue has increased up to 92% after the JMM adoption whilst the net profit has increased from 5.33% to 8.15%.
