Background. The article presents a new approach to assessing the geological complexity — quantitative assessment of areal complexity, as well as an alternative methodology for assessing complexity in 1D. Aim. Developing a numerical metric for assessing the geological complexity and creating an algorithm for complexity maps construction. Materials and methods. Generally, complexity describe the reservoir in one number, that often underestimates the real complexity of the deposit. Geological complexity, presented in the article consists of 5 groups: structuraltectonic, facies-lithological, permeability and porosity, secondary alteration and fluid properties, 13 characteristics describe the complexity space of these groups. Each of these characteristics could be presented not only in 1D but also in 2D. The proposed methodology was tested on the company’s assets. Results. The presented examples of complexity maps for several fields show the advantage of 2D complexity estimation in comparison with 1D. The analysis of decomposed complexity estimation (for individual groups) on the company’s assets showed that the key groups of complexity are structural-tectonic, facies-lithological characteristics. Therefore, characteristics that describe these groups should be taken into account during the decision-making process and assets ranking. Conclusion. A methodology of quantitative assessment of areal geological complexity has been developed. This areal assessment allows identify the most “problematic” areas, analyzing existing sources of uncertainty, and also ranking and screening company assets when making strategic decisions.

This chapter examines the effect of group dynamics on the 2016 decision within the administration of President Barack Obama to lead the international coalition in a mission to liberate Raqqa, Syria, from the Islamic State. The authors show that whereas the groupthink syndrome characterized the decision-making process of the US-led coalition’s decision to attack Raqqa, it was polythink that characterized the decision-making dynamics both in the US-led coalition and within the inner circle of Obama’s own foreign policy advisors. Through case-study analysis, the authors illustrate that groupthink is more likely in strategic decisions, whereas polythink is more likely in tactical decisions.

The accurate and frequent measurement of the drilling fluid’s rheological properties is essential for proper hydraulic management. It is also important for intelligent drilling, providing drilling fluid data to establish the optimization model of the rate of penetration. Appropriate drilling fluid properties can improve drilling efficiency and prevent accidents. However, the drilling fluid properties are mainly measured in the laboratory. This hinders the real-time optimization of drilling fluid performance and the decision-making process. If the drilling fluid’s properties cannot be detected and the decision-making process does not respond in time, the rate of penetration will slow, potentially causing accidents and serious economic losses. Therefore, it is important to measure the drilling fluid’s properties for drilling engineering in real time. This paper summarizes the real-time measurement methods for rheological properties. The main methods include the following four types: an online rotational Couette viscometer, pipe viscometer, mathematical and physical model or artificial intelligence model based on a Marsh funnel, and acoustic technology. This paper elaborates on the principle, advantages, limitations, and usage of each method. It prospects the real-time measurement of drilling fluid rheological properties and promotes the development of the real-time measurement of drilling rheological properties.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the strategic management of risks in companies from a marketing management perspective and to provide some guidance for management practice. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents the authors’ viewpoint, and it conceptualizes a new approach to risk management. Findings The conceptual discussion has opened up a possible new way for enterprises, especially SMEs, to start taking a strategic approach to risk. Originality/value This paper would like to contribute to the current debate on the role of marketing function in managerial practice beyond the classic four Ps.

Abstract. Deformation analysis is one of the main research fields in geodesy. Deformation analysis process comprises measurement and analysis phases. Measurements can be collected using several techniques. The output of the evaluation of the measurements is mainly point positions. In the deformation analysis phase, the coordinate changes in the point positions are investigated. Several models or approaches can be employed for the analysis. One approach is based on a Helmert or similarity coordinate transformation where the displacements and the respective covariance matrix are transformed into a unique datum. Traditionally a Least Squares (LS) technique is used for the transformation procedure. Another approach that could be introduced as an alternative methodology is the Total Least Squares (TLS) that is considerably a new approach in geodetic applications. In this study, in order to determine point displacements, 3-D coordinate transformations based on the Helmert transformation model were carried out individually by the Least Squares (LS) and the Total Least Squares (TLS), respectively. The data used in this study was collected by GPS technique in a landslide area located nearby Istanbul. The results obtained from these two approaches have been compared.

The objective of this paper is to establish a dichotomy - opposing analytical methods (such as Queue Theory) to experimental methods (such as Simulation) and discussing their adequateness to complex operations - set up in the matter of dimensioning the handling capacity of a large brazilian call centers company. The literature related to the application of such methods at call centers is reviewed, and the way the question is treated nowadays by the company is described. Then an experimental approach is suggested to be implemented as an alternative methodology to deal with the issue, instead of the analytical method in use. The results obtained are used to justify the adequacy of the experimental approach to the modern call centers operation, as long as it is possible to have the model closer to reality. The main implication points to a better understanding of the operation achieved with the new approach

Abstract The previous article described a new approach methodology1 for work on the development of technology for the use of the SCR CRABE SCUBA2 type diving apparatus. However, after its publication numerous questions emerged regarding the genesis of the research undertaken, also from foreign partners using the same rebreather. The work on changing the technology of use was preceded by analyses, which were available only to people involved in the decision-making process. Demonstrating all the details of the decision-making process may be tedious, but failing to present them at all might raise justified doubts about the advisability of conducting a long-term research cycle. This article only presents preliminary analyses. The necessity to perform them resulted from the specific requirements for military technologies3 which, as broadly as possible, should be knowledge-based. The knowledge-based approach by its very nature allows continuous improvement of the adequacy of the predictions made, the estimation of the level of risk when diagnosing deviations from the repeatability or precision of the model, and the possibility of adapting the technology to the changing requirements of the user resulting from tactical considerations of its use.

Hybrid ultrasound imaging systems, which combine spherical focusing on transmit with axicon focusing on receive, provide excellent resolution over a useful depth of field. This paper presents a new hybrid design with improved sensitivity, in which the axicon focusing is achieved by two conical mirrors and a PZT 5A disk cut into 8 sectors. We have investigated two methods of processing the signals from the 8 sectors. In the first, phase insensitive sector addition (PISA), the B-scan is formed from the sum of the 8 demodulated signals. In the second, multiplicative processing (MP), the 8 rf waveforms are multiplied and the resultant is demodulated to form the image. Both techniques result in smoothed speckle but degraded lateral resolution. As well, MP decreases the off-axis sensitivity of the system and artifacts characteristic of axicon focusing. Quantitative assessment of the effects of PISA and MP was performed using a new approach called contrast-to-speckle ratio (CSR). The CSR data, which is a measure of the image contrast of cylindrical voids in a random scattering medium relative to contrast fluctuations due to speckle, shows the superiority of PISA and MP. This conclusion is supported by images of in vitro human breast tissue.

Many management scholars believe that the process used to make strategic decisions affects the quality of those decisions. However, several authors have observed a lack of research on the strategic decision-making process. Empirical tests of factors that have been hypothesized to affect the way strategic decisions are made are notably absent (Fredrickson, 1985). This article reports the results of a study that attempts to assess the effects of decision-making circumstances, focusing mainly on the approaches applied and the managerial skills and capabilities the decision makers built on during concrete strategic decisionmaking procedures. The study was conducted in California between September 2005 and June 2006 and it was sponsored by a Fulbright research scholarship grant.

PurposeThis article aims to clarify the mechanism by which heuristic-driven biases influence the entrepreneurial strategic decision-making in an emerging economy.Design/methodology/approachEntrepreneurs' heuristic-driven biases have been measured using a questionnaire, comprising numerous items, including indicators of entrepreneurial strategic decision-making. To examine the relationship between heuristic-driven biases and entrepreneurial strategic decision-making process, a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire has been used to collect data from the sample of 169 entrepreneurs who operate in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS and Amos graphics software. Hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM) technique.FindingsThe article provides empirical insights into the relationship between heuristic-driven biases and entrepreneurial strategic decision-making. The results suggest that heuristic-driven biases (anchoring and adjustment, representativeness, availability and overconfidence) have a markedly negative influence on the strategic decisions made by entrepreneurs in emerging markets. It means that heuristic-driven biases can impair the quality of the entrepreneurial strategic decision-making process.Practical implicationsThe article encourages entrepreneurs to avoid relying on cognitive heuristics or their feelings when making strategic decisions. It provides awareness and understanding of heuristic-driven biases in entrepreneurial strategic decisions, which could be very useful for business actors such as entrepreneurs, managers and entire organizations. Understanding regarding the role of heuristic-driven biases in entrepreneurial strategic decisions may help entrepreneurs to improve the quality of their decision-making. They can improve the quality of their decision-making by recognizing their behavioral biases and errors of judgment, to which we are all prone, resulting in a more appropriate selection of entrepreneurial opportunities.Originality/valueThe current study is the first to focus on links between heuristic-driven bias and the entrepreneurial strategic decision-making in Pakistan—an emerging economy. This article enhanced the understanding of the role that heuristic-driven bias plays in the entrepreneurial strategic decisions and more importantly, it went some way toward enhancing understanding of behavioral aspects and their influence on entrepreneurial strategic decision-making in an emerging market. It also adds to the literature in the area of entrepreneurial management specifically the role of heuristics in entrepreneurial strategic decision-making; this field is in its initial stage, even in developed countries, while, in developing countries, little work has been done.

Aim: Dried blood spot (DBS) is a sampling approach that offers several advantages over plasma and whole blood (WB) sampling, but several factors, such as hematocrit and temperature, can adversely affect quantitation. Methodology & results: In an open-label, three-way crossover study in healthy subjects, we explored the correlation between DBS, WB and plasma samples, and between DBS samples from finger-prick and venipuncture blood for measuring edoxaban and its metabolite M-4 using LC–MS/MS. The methods were validated comprehensively. The incurred sample reanalysis experiments demonstrated quantitation reproducibility in all three matrices. Overall, there was a good correlation (near perfect concordance for edoxaban) among plasma, WB and DBS measurements. M-4 concentrations in DBS and WB were lower than in plasma. Conclusion: These results indicate using DBS may be used as an alternative methodology to measure edoxaban pharmacokinetics.
