Abstract. In this study the correlation between the monthly fluctuations of the water level of the Aswan High Dam and monthly number of earthquakes from 1982 to 2010, which occurred in the surrounding area, was investigated. Our findings reveal that significant correlation is present during the period 1982–1993 between water level and shallow seismicity (depth less than 15 km). The deep seismicity (depth larger than 15 km) is significantly correlated with the water level between January and April 1989. The time lag of the significant maximal cross-correlation varies from 2–8~months for the shallow seismicity, while it is around 7–8 months for the deep seismicity. These values of the time lags could be in favour of the presence of two distinct triggering mechanisms: one due to pore pressure diffusion and the other due to fracture compaction (undrained response).

ABSTRACTThis paper deals with the relationships of the maxima, minima and zeros of two random functions of known autocorrelations and cross-correlation, based on the work of Rice(4). Ratcliffe(3) and Briggs and Spencer(2) discuss a similar problem in connexion with a ‘Phillips Record’ of an experiment in ionospheric reflexion. In this experiment there are two highly correlated reflected signals, their maxima coming close together, and the record shows the time lags between a maximum on one signal and a maximum on the other. Briggs and Page (1) have made an experimental study of the distribution of the differences between the positions of the maxima of two highly correlated random functions, using EDSAC to construct the functions. In §§ 3–7 the frequency distributions of intervals between successive zeros and maxima, and of the lengths of intercepts by a horizontal line, are considered. This has applications to the study of the fading of long-wave radio signals, where the tune differences between successive maxima of the amplitude have been investigated.

A correlogram is a statistical tool that is used to check time-series memory by computing the auto-correlation coefficient as a function of the time lag. If the time-series has no memory, then the auto-correlation must be close to zero for any time lag, otherwise if there is a memory, then the auto-correlations must be significantly different from zero. Therefore, based on the robust detrended cross-correlation coefficient, [Formula: see text], we propose the detrended correlogram method in this paper, which will be tested for some time-series (simulated and empirical). This new statistical tool is able to visualize a complete map of the auto-correlation for many time lags and time-scales, and can therefore analyze the memory effect for any time-series.

Estuarine freshwater transport has a substantial impact on the near-shore ecosystem and coastal ocean environment away from the estuary. This paper introduces two independent methods to track the Mekong freshwater-induced mass transport by calculating the time lag (or equivalently, the phase) between in situ Mekong basin runoff and the equivalent water height (EWH) time series over the western South China Sea from a gravity recovery and climate experiment (GRACE). The first method is the harmonic analysis that determines the phase difference between annual components of the two time series (called the P-method), and the other is the cross-correlation analysis that directly obtains the time lag by shifting the lagged time series forward to attain the highest cross-correlation between the two time series (called the C-method). Using a three-year rolling window, the time lag variations in three versions of GRACE between 2005 and 2012 are computed for demonstrating the consistency of the results. We found that the time lag derived from the P-method is, on average, slightly larger and more variable than that from the C-method. A comparison of our gridded time lag against the age determined via radium isotopes in September, 2007 by Chen et al. (2010) revealed that our gridded time lag results were in good agreement with most isotope-derived ages, with the largest difference less than 6 days. Among the three versions of the GRACE time series, CSR Release 05 performed the best. The lowest standard deviation of time lag was ~1.6 days, calculated by the C-method, whereas the mean difference for all the time lags from the isotope-derived ages is ~1 day by P-method. This study demonstrates the potential of monitoring Mekong estuarine freshwater transport over the western South China Sea by GRACE.

AbstractMost European ungulate species are increasing in numbers and expanding their range. For the management and monitoring of these species, 64% of European countries rely on indirect proxies of abundance (e.g., hunting bag statistics). With increasing ungulate numbers, data on ungulate-vehicle collisions (UVC) may provide an important and inexpensive, complementary data source. Currently, it is unclear how bag statistics compare with UVC. A direct comparison of these two indices is important because both are used in ungulate management. We evaluated the relationship between UVC and ungulate hunting bags across bioclimatic, regional, and local scales, using five time lags (t−3 to t+1) for the five most common wild ungulate species in Sweden. For all species, hunting bags and UVC correlated positively, but correlation strength and time lags varied across scales and among species. The two indices correlated most strongly at the local management scale. Correlation between both indices was strong for the smaller deer species and wild boar, in particular, but much weaker for moose where we found the best fit using a 2-year time lag. For the other species, indices from the same year correlated best. We argue that the reason for moose data behaving differently is that, in Sweden, moose are formally managed using a 3-year time plan, while the other species are not. Accordingly, moose hunting bags are influenced more strongly by density-independent processes than bags of the other species. Consequently, the mismatch between the two indices may generate conflicting conclusions for management depending on the method applied.

Abstract. The analysis of the cross-correlation between the seismicity and the daily water level changes in both the Koyna and Warna (India) reservoirs is studied. The time lag between both datasets is calculated and is applied to estimate the hydraulic diffusivity. The range of the hydraulic diffusivity estimated between 0.1 m2 s−1 and 10 m2 s−1.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye’den göç ve Almanya’nın ekonomik göstergeleri arasındaki ilişkiyi, nicel metot yöntemleri kullanarak değerlendirmektir. Türkiye’nin belirsiz Avrupa ile bütünleşme beklentilerine rağmen  Avrupa Birliğinin köklü üyelerine olan Türk göçü devam edecektir. Çok sayıda Türk azınlığın yaşadığı ve hayat standartlarının yüksek olduğu Almanya, Hollanda ve Fransa’ya  büyük bir göç dalgası gerçekleşebilir. Çalışmanın istatistiksel bölümünün sonuçları, toplam göç ile gayri safi yurtiçi hasıladaki büyüme arasında pozitif, toplam göç ile işsizlik arasındaki negatif ve tahmin edilen bağımlılık yönüyle uygunluk içerisinde olan toplam göç ile aylık gelir arasında pozitif ilişki olduğunu göstermektedir. Türkiye’den göçle işsizlik arasındaki ilişki, toplam göçle olan ilişkiden daha düşüktür. Ancak, Almanya’daki yabancı mevcudiyeti ile Türkiye’den göç arasında bir ilişki bulunmaktadır. Bu durum, var olan göçmen topluluğunun olduğu yerin, yeni göçmenleri, köken bağlarına dayanarak cezbetmesi ve maliyet- riskler sebebiyle göçün düşük seviye de olduğuna dayanan kuramsal Ağ teorisi görüşü ile uygunluk göstermektedir. Göç ve işsizlik arasında gözlenen ilişki, Almanya’ya göçün  işgücü piyasasında talepte meydana gelen değişime karşılık geldiği gerçeğini göstermektedir. İşsizlik ve göç olgularının meydana geliş zamanlarında bir aralık  olsa bile  göç, Alman emek pazarında var olan dengesizliklerin azaltılmasında nispeten etkili bir mekanizma gibi görünmektedir. ENGLISH TITLE & ABSTRACTTurkish Immigration to the European Union: The Case of GermanyThe objective of the paper was to evaluate the relationships between immigration from Turkey and economic indicators in Germany using  quantitative methods. Despite Turkey’s unclear European integration prospects, it is predicted that Turkish immigration to  established member countries of the EU will continue. The strongest waves may flow to Germany, Netherlands or France, where numerous Turkish minorities are already present and where the living standards are high. Results from the statistical analysis of the paper showed a positive correlation between immigration total and the growth of gross domestic product. On the other hand, a negative correlation of immigration total and unemployment was found and a positive relationship between immigration total and income total which is in agreement with the expected dependency direction. With regards to  immigration from Turkey it is less correlated to unemployment than immigration total. But there is a correlation between immigration from Turkey and the stock of foreigners in Germany This is in accordance with the theoretical concept of network theory where an existing community of migrants keeps attracting new migrants because the costs and risks associated with migration are lower, thanks to established linkages to the country of origin. The observed correlation of migration and unemployment points to the fact that immigration to Germany responds to changes in demand in the labour market. Even though a time lag may occur in the case of unemployment and immigration, migration appears to be a relatively effective mechanism to offset existing imbalances in German labour markets.

Among the qualities that distinguish dance from other types of human behavior and interaction are the creation and breaking of synchrony and symmetry. The combination of symmetry and synchrony can provide complex interactions. For example, two dancers might make very different movements, slowing each time the other sped up: a mirror symmetry of velocity. Examining patterns of synchrony and symmetry can provide insight into both the artistic nature of the dance, and the nature of the perceptions and responses of the dancers. However, such complex symmetries are often difficult to quantify. This paper presents three methods – Generalized Local Linear Approximation, Time-lagged Autocorrelation, and Windowed Cross-correlation – for the exploration of symmetry and synchrony in motion-capture data as is it applied to dance and illustrate these with examples from a study of free-form dance. Combined, these techniques provide powerful tools for the examination of the structure of symmetry and synchrony in dance.

ABSTRACT An in vitro model of mycobacterial growth arrest was developed using Mycobacterium bovis BCG. When an exponentially growing culture was transferred to an evacuated tube, growth continued; treatment with a source of nitric oxide (diethylenetriamine-nitric oxide adduct [DETA-NO] at 50 μM) halted growth immediately, and aeration restored growth. When the period of growth arrest exceeded 4 h, a time lag occurred before aeration could restore growth. The lag time was maximal (24 h) after 16 h of growth arrest. These time lags indicated that one transition period was required for cells to achieve full arrest of growth and another for them to recover fully from growth arrest. DETA-NO-induced growth arrest failed to protect from the lethal effects of anaerobic shock, which caused rapid lysis of both growing and growth-arrested cells. While growth arrest had little effect on the lethal action of rifampin, it eliminated isoniazid lethality. Growth arrest reduced but did not eliminate fluoroquinolone lethality. Two fluoroquinolones, moxifloxacin and gatifloxacin, were equally lethal to exponentially growing cells, but moxifloxacin was more active during growth arrest. This difference is attributed to the fluoroquinolone C-7 ring structure, the only difference between the compounds. Collectively these data characterize a new system for halting mycobacterial growth that may be useful for evaluating new antituberculosis agents.

We consider an optimal investment problem when a firm such as an electric power company has the operational flexibility to expand and contract capacity with fixed cost. This problem is formulated as an impulse control problem combined with optimal stopping. Consequently, we obtain optimal investment timing, optimal capacity expansion and contraction timing, and the investment value. We also show investment, capacity expansion and contraction rule are influenced by the price volatility and the initial capacity is also influenced by the ratio between base-load plant and peak-load plant. In addition, we investigate how time lag between investment and operation influences the investment rule.

AbstractThe present study reconciles theoretical differences between the Lagrangian diffusivity and effective diffusivity in a transformed spatial coordinate based on the contours of a quasi-conservative tracer. In the transformed coordinate, any adiabatic stirring effect, such as shear-induced dispersion, is naturally isolated from diabatic cross-contour motions. Therefore, Lagrangian particle motions in the transformed coordinate obey a transformed zeroth-order stochastic (i.e., random walk) model with the diffusivity replaced by the effective diffusivity. Such a stochastic model becomes the theoretical foundation on which both diffusivities are exactly unified. In the absence of small-scale diffusion, particles do not disperse at all in the transformed contour coordinate. Besides, the corresponding Lagrangian autocorrelation becomes a delta function and is thus free from pronounced overshoot and negative lobe at short time lags that may be induced by either Rossby waves or mesoscale eddies; that is, particles decorrelate immediately and Lagrangian diffusivity is already asymptotic no matter how small the time lag is. The resulting instantaneous Lagrangian spreading rate is thus conceptually identical to the effective diffusivity that only measures the instantaneous irreversible mixing. In these regards, the present study provides a new look at particle dispersion in contour-based coordinates.
