Dr. Brad Urquhart is a Professor in the department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Western Ontario. He completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as his postdoctoral research at Western. Professor Urquhart teaches several undergraduate Pharmacology courses, including Human Pharmacology and Therapeutic Principles (Pharm3620) and Human Toxicology (Pharm4660A). In his research, Professor Urquhart focuses on patients with kidney disease and their response to therapeutics. He supervises students at the graduate level as well as 4th year Honors BMSc students. In his free time, he is an avid sports fan and loves to spend time with his family.

Dr. Robert Hudson is a Professor of Chemistry, cross-appointed to Biochemistry. He has been at Western for 19 years, coming here from what he calls “the usual path”. Professor Hudson completed his postdoctoral research at California Institute of Technology in the lab of Professor Peter Dervan “one of the giants of bioorganic chemistry”, where he was for just over two years. Prior to that he completed his undergraduate education, Master’s and PhD at the University of Toronto. His free time is devoted to family, martial arts (something he has been doing for over twenty years), and travelling.

ABSTRACTFirst Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Disease Models & Mechanisms, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Katie Lloyd and Stamatia Papoutsopoulou are co-first authors on ‘Using systems medicine to identify a therapeutic agent with potential for repurposing in inflammatory bowel disease’, published in DMM. Katie conducted the research described in this article while a postdoctoral research associate in Prof. Chris Probert's lab at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK. She is now a lecturer in pharmacology at the University of Chester, Chester, UK. Her research focuses on personalising medicine by combining innovative experimental approaches to identify biomarkers of inflammatory disease, drug response and mechanisms of drug resistance, which consider complex factors such as inter-patient variability and co-morbidities. Stamatia conducted the research described in this article while a postdoctoral research associate in Werner Muller's lab at the University of Manchester, Manchester, UK. She is currently a postdoctoral research associate in the lab of Mark Pritchard at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK, investigating the regulation of transcriptional responses during inflammation and the impact of environmental factors on them, and has just accepted the position of assistant professor at the University of Thessaly, Greece.

This chapter offers description and reflexive insight into the multiple ways the authors has used Diigo as a collaborative learning tool in courses associated with the Master's of Arts Management degree program at the University of Oregon. The author discusses the particular attributes of the Diigo platform when it comes to finding, sharing, and collectively exploring online resources, paying close attention to where Diigo sits on the landscape of social networking sites. Drawing on a handful of examples across two graduate-level classes, the author also details the kinds of assignments and pedagogical strategies into which the author has woven Diigo as a collaborative tool. The chapter concludes with a critical assessment of the ways in which Diigo resonates with ideas of networked learning by foregrounding collaboration and participation in educational settings.

The University of Colorado Denver (UCD) has taken the leadership role with the first Sports Engineering Program in the United States. Sports Engineering is an exciting new area of emphasis for graduate degrees in engineering. This educational program is offered through cooperation between the downtown Denver College of Engineering and Applied Science and the Anschutz Medical Campus, both part of the University of Colorado Denver. This program is showing great promise for high enrollments and exciting research opportunities working with the sports equipment manufacturers, the athletes, and the sports medicine community.

A large percentage of the mechanical engineering students at the University of North Florida have been extensively exposed to transformative learning opportunities over the past five years. Through collaborative efforts with local industry and other institutions, the students have had the opportunity to utilize their engineering knowledge in real-world applications. Students engaged in these projects have improved several of their technical skills in, for example, computer-aided engineering, design, mechanical testing, and analysis. Nontechnical objectives of these projects include improving communication skills, learning how an engineering firm functions, and learning how to research relevant data. Technical and non-technical objectives were met by students working on engineering projects sponsored by partnering collaborators. The collaborators defined the engineering project and the students, under the supervision of faculty, carried out the project tasks. This paper discusses a number of different transformative learning opportunities for students; it discusses the educational objectives and skills developed for each project, and it describes how the students are better prepared for their future careers through their involvement with the program. Many of the students have found rewarding engineering careers and a few have continued to pursue graduate degrees. Furthermore, the paper discusses how the efforts of this program are aligned with the mission of the University in that it heavily emphasizes transformational learning opportunities for the whole university community.

The metaphoric reading of native life as an unopened book by two ranking colonial administrators and authoritative ethnographers in Malaya and the Philippines cannot be a simple coincidence. Clifford and Barrows represent two empires, one conservative and peaking, the other liberal and ascendant, meeting in “the Malay Archipelago.” Clifford was a product of the rugged and cultured education demanded of British aristocratic scions, while Barrows exemplified the rising American professional classes, holding graduate degrees in education and anthropology. Both men served well the metropolitan ideologies that guided the imperial hand: British Providence to provide good government to the Malay states; American manifest destiny to replace Spain as the agent of civilization in the Philippines. Using their ethnographic readings, Clifford helped perfect the art of British “indirect rule” Malaya, while Barrows established the Philippine mass education system, the main thrust of the United States' “benevolent assimilation.” Both men retired as decorated officers and established literati, Barrows as the President of the University of California and Clifford a literary figure after Joseph Conrad and Rudyard Kipling.

Scientific advances in genetics and genomics are rapidly redefining our understanding of health and illness and creating a significant shift in practice for all health care disciplines. Nurses educated at the graduate level are well-prepared to assume clinical and leadership roles in health care systems and must also be prepared to assume similar roles related to genetic/genomic health care. This chapter describes the processes used to create a consensus document identifying the genetic/genomic competencies essential for nurses prepared at the graduate level. Three groups were involved in the competency development; a steering committee provided leadership and used qualitative methods to review and analyze pertinent source documents and create an initial competency draft; an advisory board evaluated and revised the draft, and a consensus panel refined and validated the final set of competencies. The concensus process resulted in 38 competencies organized under the following categories: Risk Assessment and Interpretation; Genetic Education, Counseling, Testing and Results Interpretation; Clinical Management; Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications; Professional Role; Leadership, and Research. These competencies apply to all individuals functioning at the graduate level in nursing, including but not limited to advanced practice registered nurses, clinical nurse leaders, nurse educators, nurse administrators, and nurse scientists and are intended to inform and guide their practice.

Ian Gordon Ross (1926?2006) was educated at the University of Sydney (BSc 1943?1946, MSc 1947?1949) and University College London (PhD 1949?1952), did postdoctoral research at Florida State University (1953?1954), and was a staff member at the University of Sydney, 1954?1967. In 1968, he moved to the Australian National University (ANU) as Professor of Chemistry, where he also became Dean of Science (1973), Deputy Vice-Chancellor (1977) and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Special Projects) (1989?1990). He was instrumental in setting up Anutech, the commercial arm of the University. He was a driving force behind the establishment of undergraduate and postgraduate engineering at the ANU. His research centred on electronic spectroscopy of pi systems.
