Introduction: A rigorous characterization of the impact of residential status of medical students (hostelites vs. day scholars) on the particulars of their academic performance has been lacking in Pakistan. Objective: To determine the relation of residential status of third year MBBS students to their academic performance in Forensic Medicine based on comparison of their pre-professional and professional examinations results during 2019. Materials & Methods: A comparative study was conducted from August to October 2019 on the examination performance of third year MBBS students of Rehman Medical College, Peshawar in the subject of Forensic Medicine. The results of theory and viva pre-professional and professional examinations were compared and categorized by residential status of students (Hostelites or Day Scholars). Students were categorized into groups according to their academic performance. Descriptive and Comparative data analysis was performed by SPSS 22.0, keeping p≤0.05 as significant. Results: No significant difference was found in the mean marks of hostelites and day scholars in pre-professional and professional examinations. The trend of significant improvement from pre-professional to professional examinations was similar in both groups, and it applied to both the theory and viva examinations. A significant correlation existed between the performance in two examinations among all students with no difference between the hostelites and day scholars. Conclusion: Residential status of MBBS students had no effect on their academic performance in the subject of Forensic Medicine. This study is a mixed method design which employed both quantitative and qualitative methods in order to investigate the impact of dialogic learning on students’ attention and academic achievement. Data were collected using several instruments, including: the Attention Network Test; academic performance tests and semi-structured interviews. Results of Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) indicated that there is a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of students of the experimental and control groups on the executive control in favor of the experimental group after controlling the IQ score and pre-test scores. Further, there is a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of student of the experimental and control groups on the academic achievement tests (except of mathematics) in favor of the experimental group. The qualitative data also supported the quantitative findings. Therefore, dialogic teaching has significantly greater and more positive changes on some aspects of attention and academic performance.

Introduction: Creating an educational climate that engages the students in the digital era is crucial as it prepares them for the future.Objectives: The aim of this multiple case study is to highlight the impact of creative educational environment on the students’ awareness of digital era tools.Methods: In this study three activities were organized. Firstly, a brain storming seminar titled “Medical Practice in Artificial Intelligence Era” was held. The second event was E-poster competitions which challenged the students’ curiosity to address the health problems and to introduce innovative solutions to solve it. Medical and nursing students presented 32 posters. Third activity was MeDuino, a hands-on workshop to familiarize the students with arduino technology in medical practice.Results: Around 260 participants attended the seminar. In their feedback, 72% of students found the topics attractive and more than 60% found its theme relevant and beneficial. E-poster competition was evaluated using a modified rubric scale. The data was analysed by SPSS showed that only “creativity” and “practicality” merits scored little above the mean range. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean score of ‘creativity’ and ‘practicality’ between medical students and nursing students. However, in general medical students’ scores were higher compared to nursing students. 90% of students said that they improved cognitively and 85% found it fascinating. In Meduino workshop (Robotics), The 30 participants practiced mini projects. 86 % found it attractive, 81% expressed that it improve d their cognitive about technology as noted in comparing the pre and post- event questionnaires. The students’ concerns included the time constraints short time and lack of lecturers’ guidance during posters’ preparation.Conclusion(s): Transforming educational environment physically, emotionally and socially managed to address few aspects digital era. Objective: To assess the relationship between self-esteem and the academic score of undergraduate medical students of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was performed from June 2018 to June 2019. The study area was Poonch Medical College, Azad Kashmir. The data collection tool was well-verified and widely used Rosenberg self-esteem scale. The study questionnaire was electronically distributed to all Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery students on the Poonch Medical College. The total student was 500 and out of the 253 completed and submitted the questionnaire (response rate of 50.6%). Results: The mean academic score of all students was 66.61 ± 5.42 and the mean RSE score was 28.66 ± 3.98. A statistically significant correlation was not found between age, academic score, and RSE score. Female students had slightly higher academic performance scores and RSE scores compared to the male students, but this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: This study did not reveal any significant relationship between academic score and self-esteem of undergraduate medical students. However, both academic scores and self-esteem can be further improved. Future studies are invited to find out the other factors responsible for better academic performance. Background: The lockdown due to Covid-19 has impacted certain aspects of cognition among medical students. Aim: To explore the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown on metamemory among medical students studying in a private medical college in Pakistan. Study design: Experimental study. Methodology: This study with enrolled students (n=233) was carried out after ethical review committee’s (ERC) approval at CMH Kharian Medical College (CKMC), Physiology Department, Kharian-Pakistan. Both male and female medical students were enrolled. In phase 1, the students reported to the Physiology laboratory where age and gender were recorded. Metamemory was measured using the Multi-factorial Memory Questionnaire (MMQ)-Satisfaction scale using the Baycrest Centre protocols for its administration and scoring. Data was analyzed by SPSS software, version 21. MMQ-Satisfaction score was presented as mean±SD. Statistical significance was taken at p value <0.05. Results: Among males mean±SD for Pre Covid-19 MMQ was 43.24±9.58 while mean±SD for Post Covid-19 MMQ males was 55.32±6.01. Significant difference was seen between Pre & Post Covid-19 MMQ scores with p-value of <0.000. Conclusion: We concluded that significant difference was seen between Pre & Post Covid-19 MMQ scores with p-value of <0.000. However, means among all age groups were significantly equal with the others in Pre & Post COVID-19 MMQ. Similarly, means were significantly equal among both genders for Pre & Post COVID-19 MMQ. Abstract Background The current study aimed to evaluate the previously unexplored correlation between undergraduate medical students’ attendance during their surgical clerkship and their academic performance. It also aimed to explore any difference in the attendance rate between male and female students and whether this difference, if present, affects the academic performance. Methods A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study has been conducted on 331 undergraduate medical students during their surgical clerkships at the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences (CMMS) at Arabian Gulf University (AGU), Bahrain from September 2018 to June 2020. Results There was a positive statistically significant correlation between students’ attendance during surgical clerkship and academic performance (r = 0.360, P <  0.01). Mean attendance rate was greater in each increasing category of academic performance: 47.95% in the weak category (less than 65%, n = 42), 57.62% in the good performance category (65% to less than 75%, n = 108), 67.82% in the very good performance category (75% to less than 85%, n = 126), 83.16% in the excellent performance category (85% and above, n = 55). The mean attendance rate of male students was 59.76% (SD = 25.73), compared to 66.92% (SD = 24.30) in the female students. T-test indicated that the difference between the mean attendance of the two groups of the students (male, female) was statistically significant (t = 2.483, p <  0.05). On the other hand, the difference between the mean academic performance for the two groups of students, male & female, (t = 0.284, p = 0.777) was not statistically significant. Conclusions Our study showed a significant relationship between undergraduate medical students’ attendance during their surgical clerkship and their academic performance. Further studies are needed to stratify this correlation according to clinical and theoretical teaching activities. No significant difference was observed in academic performance between female and male students.

Abstract Background Since the 1970s, writing has been widely used in classroom settings. Writing enhances learning, but there are limited studies that prove its effectiveness, especially in the medical education setting. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to investigate the effect of writing on medical students’ academic performance. Methods An experiment was conducted with 139 medical students from Seoul National University College of Medicine. They were randomly assigned to three study conditions: self-study (SS), expository writing (EW), and argumentative writing (AW). Each group studied the given material by the method they were assigned, and they were tested on their understanding and transfer of knowledge. Results The results showed that the two writing groups displayed better performance than the SS group in transfer type items, while there was no difference in scores between the EW and AW group. However, the three groups showed no significant difference in their scores for rote-memory type items . Also, there was a positive correlation between writing score and transfer type items in the AW group. Conclusions This study provides empirical evidence for writing to be adopted in medical education for greater educational benefits. Our findings indicate that writing can enhance learning and higher-order thinking, which are critical for medical students.

Abstract Background Despite the frequency of medical students' participation in ophthalmology clerkships away from their home institution, the impact and benefit of these clerkships have remained uninvestigated. To date, no study has focused specifically on medical student perspectives of away ophthalmology clerkships. Objective The purpose of the study was to evaluate the medical students' perspectives on and experience with away rotations in ophthalmology, and assess their effect on residency Match outcomes. Methods An anonymous, original, online survey was designed and distributed to applicants of the 2015 to 2018 ophthalmology Match cycles. Results A total of 69 responses from nine medical institutions were collected (62% response rate). Forty-one respondents (59%) chose to perform at least one away rotation. Among away rotators, the mean number performed was 1.44. Thirty-seven away rotators (90%) reported receiving an interview from at least one host institution they visited. The average estimated cost of an away rotation was ∼1,709 U.S. dollars. With a 95.7% overall match rate among the respondents, no statistically significant difference was seen in match rates between away rotators and nonaway rotators (p = 0.564). Among the away rotators, the mean position on their rank order list matched was 2.34, while the nonaway rotators matched at a mean position of 2.13 (p = 0.383). Conclusion No association between away participation and success in the San Francisco Match was observed in this study. However, study participants did experience non-Match-related benefits from away elective participation.

Abstract Background Studies examining the impact of training modules on characterization of diminutive colonic polyps (DCP) show varying results. Aim We aimed to assess the impact of a novel web-based training module on the accuracy of in vivo characterization of DCPs using different imaging modalities. Differences between groups with varying degrees of endoscopic experience were also assessed. Methods In total, 90 images of 30 DCPs viewed with high definition white light (HDWL), i-Scan, and indigo carmine chromoendoscopy were included in an online test module. Testing was undertaken before and after completing a novel web-based in vivo characterization training module. In total, 21 subjects (medical students (MS), gastroenterology trainees (GT), and gastroenterology consultants (GC)) undertook the tests and training module. Results No statistically significant difference in overall accuracy was found between the three groups either pre- (MS 59.1 %, GR 65.7 %, GC 62.4 %, P = ns for all three comparisons) or post-training (MS 69.2 %, GR 71.1 %, GC 71.3 %, P = ns for all three comparisons). Accuracy improved significantly for all three groups post-training (P < 0.001) as did interobserver agreement. No significant differences in accuracy between modalities were found pre-training (HDWL 64.8 %, i-Scan 60.0 %, chromoendoscopy 62.2 %, P = ns). Post-training accuracy with HDWL and chromoendoscopy was better than with i-Scan (HDWL 72.9 % vs i-Scan 65.1 %, P = 0.002; i-Scan 65.1 % vs chromoendoscopy 73.7 %, P < 0.001). The proportion of high confidence predictions increased from 25.7 % to 41.5 %, with a high confidence prediction accuracy of 81.7 %. Conclusions Skills for in vivo characterization of DCPs are not acquired through endoscopic experience alone. A novel web-based training intervention results in modest improvements in accuracy with further improvements likely to require more prolonged training.

The Covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc throughout the world, with 150 million cases to date and over 3 million lives claimed worldwide. Objectives: To explore the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown on psychological health parameters i.e. depression, anxiety and stress as well as on body mass index among medical students studying in a private medical college in Pakistan. Study Design: Experimental study. Methodology: This study with enrolled students (n=233) was carried out after ethical review committee’s (ERC) approval at CMH Kharian Medical College (CKMC), Physiology Department, Kharian-Pakistan. Both male and female medical students were enrolled. In phase 1, the students reported to the Physiology laboratory where age and gender were recorded. The pre-lockdown readings of BMI and DASS-21(Depression, Anxiety, Stress) scale were taken. In phase-2, the post-lockdown readings of BMI and DASS-21 scale were taken once the students returned to campus. Statistical analysis: Data was analyzed by SPSS software, version 21. BMI and DASS-21 score were presented as mean + SD. Statistical significance was taken at p value <0.05. Results: In present study, results showed that there was a decrease in level of depression post-Covid-19-lockdown among enrolled subjects with significant p-values (0.019*) in the pre and post covid-19-lockdown comparison. Conclusion: We concluded that significant difference was seen between Pre & Post Covid-19-lockdown depression with p-value of <0.019. However, insignificant difference was seen between Pre & Post Covid-19-lockdown anxiety and stress with p-value of >0.05.
