The paper intends to analyse the heroic lives of Muslim women, who are oppressed in the name of culture, tradition, and religion through a textual analysis of the novel The Hour Past Midnight, written by the Tamil writer Salma and translated by Lakshmi Holmstrom. The paper explores the struggles faced by the hero(in)es in the novel. Originally written in Tamil, and entitled Irandaam Jaamathin Kadhai, the novel depicts the challenging lives of Muslim women living in a cloistered space. The novel narrates the incidents in the lives of Rabia, her mother Zohra; Rahima, Wahida, Firdaus, Mumtaz, Farida and some other women of the neighbourhood. All of them are victims of the misogynist and patriarchal mind-set of their community. Some of these women stay silent, and endure every kind of pain and suffering with extreme patience and resilience. Others choose to defy the norms which are set for them and live on their terms. They stand up for their individuality, rights, and dignity. Each of these women, nonetheless, demonstrates heroic courage, fortitude, resilience, and resistance. By facing the predicament of their lives boldly, and by challenging the patriarchal institutions, these characters demonstrate that each of them is an individual full of potential.

This paper aims to analyse the characteristics of a Muslim Malay woman as portrayed in the novel titled ‘Diary of a Nurse’ by Aminah Mokhtar from the perspective of Feminism Talbiah. The concept of Feminism Talbiah integrates Elaine Showalter’s notion of Feminism and Yusuf al-Qardhawi’s thoughts of Muslim women. Talbiah means a total surrender to Allah SWT. Tauhid is an essential element of a Muslim Malay woman who engages in total surrender to Allah SWT in terms of her personality, psychology, spiritual and other aspects of life. Textual analysis of the novel reveals that the main character, who is a Muslim Malay woman named Siti Munirah, holds the concept of talbiah as reflected in her obedience to Allah SWT. This paper concludes the character of Siti Munirah is developed based on the element of tauhid, which is the element neglected in the western feminism. Keywords: Feminism, feminism Talbiah, female character, Ginocritic, Malay, Muslim, tauhid.Cite as: Ali, A.H., & Abdullah, I.R. Perwatakan wanita Melayu muslim dalam novel ‘Diari Seorang Jururawat’ karya Aminah Mokhtar [The characteristics of a Malay muslim woman in the novel ‘Diari Seorang Jururawat’ by Aminah Mokhtar].

If the rite of widow-immolation fired Western imagination at the turn of the nineteenth century, then purdah (life in seclusion) held captive the West’s attention at the turn of the twentieth. Purdah took on a special connotation especially during the British Raj. With the gradual rise of the novel ideas of nationhood across religions, languages or cultures of the subcontinent, purdah became more than the sceptre of male prescriptive authority for upholding religious/cultural precepts of a community. It became further charged as the confrontational ground of conflicting authority—for one race to rule and for the other to forge its identity as a self-ruling nation. Not only is women’s representation of purdah in their writings considered more authentic but they also often challenge the stereotyping of a purdahnashin and reject the broad-brushed, mono-toned portrayal of their existence. Although Hindus too practised purdah of a sort, this chapter focuses on two Muslim women writers (Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain and Iqbalunnissa Hussain).

This paper is a functional stylistic study of a selected passage from Doris Lessing’s novel The Grass is Singing. In the novel The Grass is Singing, a white woman in Rhodesia is killed by her black servant but surprisingly the murder instead of bringing a stir spreads a silence in the local white community. Further, the text on an intuitive reading seems to absolve the murderer of the crime which forms the research question of the paper. Thus, close and systematic textual analysis of the text representing the murder scene was conducted and it was found that the linguistic choices of the text does create a semantic universe where the murder and the murdered are allegorical figures representing nature and nurture in a mutual conflict. The methodology for linguistic analysis of the selected text is borrowed from Michael Halliday’s theoretical system Systemic Functional Linguistics. The text is analysed by means of transitivity system which provides the investigative tools to study the representational choices of the text.

As an alternative to some of the current negative impressions of the book, and accusations directed at the author, this essay presents a view of the novel and of the author’s motivations. It draws on two elements, evidences from the text itself, and an inward level or esoteric interpretation of the text. From an approach of Hindu religious and spiritual doctrines, and universal metaphysical truths from a Traditionalist perspective, it concludes that a fair and unbiased textual analysis which foregrounds Truth allows a genuine reader to understand what the author actually wrote, and to see beyond the conflict and accusations. Keywords: Hindu esoterism, discernment, Traditionalist perspective, human integration
