Coagulation is the most widespread method of natural and wastewater purification from the bulk of colloidal, finely dispersed, and partially dissolved contaminants. The characteristics of the new composite flocculants-coagulants ASFC and ISFC developed by the authors compared to traditional aluminum and iron salts are given. The characteristics of natural waters, which were used to study the efficiency of using the obtained flocculants-coagulants, are given. To compare the effect of the developed materials with known products, we used such a parameter as their coagulation ability to purify high-color water from the Orsha river and medium-color water from the Volga and Tvertsa rivers in Russia. An attempt is made to assess the effect of magnetic treatment of the developed composite flocculants-coagulants. Based on the conducted research and production tests, recommendations were developed to use aluminum and iron-containing composite flocculants-coagulants to purify natural river waters and industrial wastewaters.

Coagulation is an essential process in the treatment of water and industrial wastewater. In the field of drinking water treatment since ancient times, water purification using coagulants using various substances has been practiced. Coagulation is the most common method of purification of natural and wastewaters from the bulk of colloidal, finely dispersed, and partially dissolved contaminants. The characteristics of the new composite flocculants-coagulants ASFC and ISFC developed by the authors are presented in comparison with conventional aluminum and iron salts. The titration method was used to study the behavior of coagulant flocculants at different pH. The titration method was used to study the behavior of coagulant flocculants at different pH. The ζ-potentials and isoelectric points for aluminum hydroxide obtained by hydrolysis of a coagulant are determined. The nature of the interaction of active silicic acid and the products of hydrolysis of aluminum salts as components of composite flocculants-coagulants is shown. The characteristics of natural waters are given, on which the efficiency of using the obtained flocculants-coagulants is investigated. A comparison of the coagulating ability of coagulants in water purification with high color from the Orsha River and with medium color from the Volga and Tvertsa rivers is presented.

The main industries of the Republic of Bashkortostan discharging pollutants to surface waters are presented. The quantitative indicators of natural waters volumes abstracted by enterprises of fuel, chemical and petrochemical industries are viewed as well as mass of pollutants discharged with sewage. The basic problems of the industry of water protection are presented. Device for water cleaning from oil and heavy metals based on galvanochemical method of water treatment is proposed and described. The results of industrial water cleaning from a number of impurities by galvano coagulation are viewed.

The management and status of public water bodies in Japan is discussed. The environmental quality standards which have been set and the levels of compliance with these standards are shown. The water quality of Japanese rivers, lakes, reservoirs, wetlands and coastal waters is described, and eutrophication problems are mentioned. The effects of changes in population density and levels of recycling of industrial wastewaters on the quality of water bodies are discussed. Almost 75% of industrial wastewater is now recycled. Per capita availability of freshwater in Japan is comparatively low, and the construction of 530 dams, in addition to the 2393 dams already in operation, is planned. Irrigation effluents from paddy fields are a major factor which influences river water quality in Japan. The improvement of water quality using various methods is discussed.

Quantitative and qualitative composition of microorganisms have been determined by the microbiological methods of the analysis of natural waters and industrial wastewater. It is shown that the dominant microflora of the studied waters are Diplococcus, Sarcina, Bacillus, Pseudomonas bacteria types, blue-green algae of Oscillatoria types, as well as Saccharomyces yeast types. Morphological, physiological and cultural characteristics of colonies grown on nutrient media were studied to identify microorganisms. The growth pattern of colonies of microorganisms on meat-peptone agar (for bacteria) and wort-agar (for yeast) in a Petri dish is shown.

The effects of pH and major ion composition on the chemical speciation of the divalent cations of Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd have been examined after consideration of the available thermodynamic database for solution complexes of these ions. Calculations were made for two model river waters representing the 1% and 99% extremes in composition of global river waters. The results show that inorganic speciation behaviour is of two characteristic types: (a) Cu, Zn and Co are dominated by bis-hydroxy- complexes at high pH and show the greatest reduction in the fraction of free aquo ion with increasing pH; (b) Pb, Ni and Cd are dominated by carbonato- complexes at high pH and show a more gradual decrease in the fraction of free aquo ion with increasing pH. For Cu, Pb and Ni significant fractions of the labile forms of these metal ions are present as inorganic complexes in the pH range of most natural waters, whereas for Zn, Co and Cd this is true only at moderately high pH (pH >7.5). Complexing with the major ions SO42– and Cl– is important only at low pH in river waters of high ionic strength.

An FIA technique with 7 s reaction time was used to analyse free plus labile Al in fulvic acid (FA) solutions and natural waters at pH 4.7, without the need for separation procedures. Titrations of these solutions using incremental pH or total Al were used to determine pH binding curves or estimates of the 'kinetic' Al complexation capacity (Al-CCk) respectively. The operational definition of Al-CCk relates to the capacity of a humic substance or natural water to bind Al through a 7-s FIA reaction time under defined experimental conditions of chromophore (CAS) concentration, ionic strength, and pH. Both Al binding strength and complexation capacity were greater than the corresponding Cu-CC (ISE) values. The Al-CCk measurements at pH 4.7 were 710 μmol Al g-1 v. 590 μmol Cu g-1. Al-CCk results (pH 4.7) were higher for soil FA (710 μmol g-1) than for aquatic FA (390 μmol g-1). Al-CCk results (pH 4.7) for five unfiltered river waters from different catchments gave results in the range 6.5-9.8 μmol Al L-1. The differences between total (natural) Al in the samples and Al-CCk were between 2.7 μM and 8.6 μM. Filtration experiments identified fractionation patterns between total (natural) Al and the fraction of Al-CCk not utilized. The Al titration of alginate, another component of natural organic matter, is reported.

The paper evaluates the question of whether a combined anaerobic-aerobic or a solely aerobic treatment of some particular industrial wastewaters leads to better results. Therefore three different industrial wastewaters were treated in two different process lines: one line consisted of anaerobic treatment prior to aerobic treatment and in the other, only aerobic treatment was applied. The experiments were run with wastewater from:–the pectin industry–the sugar industry (beet sugar)–the animal pulp industry. The data presented in this paper were gained from experimental work which was conducted over a period of two years. Different scales of treatment plants were used. The anaerobic treatment was done in full- and semitechnical scale reactors, while the aerobic treatment took place in labscale and semitechnical scale plants. Surprisingly in all three cases the solely aerobic treatment led to slightly better results in terms of residual pollution. Finally the paper presents data gained from a recently built, full-scale anaerobic-aerobic process which treats pectin waste. The aerobic stage of the process was designed on the basis of the results from the experimental work which was mentioned above. The results from the former experimental work and from the full-scale operation are compared.

Abstract Standards for highly toxic and carcinogenic pollutants impose strict guidelines, requiring values close to zero, regarding the degradation of such pollutants in industrial streams. In many cases, classic bioremoval processes fail. Therefore, we proposed a stream leaving the microbial membrane bioreactor (MBR) that is directed to an additional membrane separation mode (NF/RO). Under certain conditions, the integrated process not only benefits the environment but may also increase the profitability of the bioreactor operation. An appropriate model was developed and tested in which the bioremoval of benzene and toluene by Pseudomonas fluorescens was used as an example. This paper presents equations for selecting the operation parameters of the integrated system to achieve the expected degree of industrial wastewater purification.
