Background. Effective 2007, the ACGME required scholarly activity during residency. Although many programs have ongoing research, residents' involvement may be limited. This US anesthesiology residency survey assesses the current scholarly environment, research activity and program support during training. Methods. Following IRB approval, 131 US anesthesiology program directors were invited to participate in a web-based survey. Questions to directors and residents included program structure, research activity, funding and productivity. We categorized residencies threefold based on their size. Results are summarized descriptively. Results. The response rate was 31.3% (n=41) for program directors and 15.3% (n=185) for residents. Residents' responses mirrored those of program directors' regarding the presence of didactic curricula (51% versus 51.9%), research rotations (57% versus 56.2%) and a project requirement (37% versus 40%). Demands of residency (27.0%) and early stage in training (22.2%) were the main obstacles to research cited by trainees. Residents' financial support was available in 94.3% of programs. Medium and large programs had multiple funding sources (NIH, industrial and private). Conclusion. Programs are dedicated to incorporate research into their curriculum. Residents' financial support and mentorship are available, while research time is limited. Systematic improvements are needed to increase trainee research in US anesthesiology residencies.

The Interdisciplinary Network for Dementia Using Current Technology, INDUCT, is a Marie Sklodowska Curie funded International Training Network that aims to develop a multi-disciplinary, inter-sectorial educational research framework for Europe to improve technology and care for people with dementia, and to provide the evidence to show how technology can improve the lives of people with dementia. Within INDUCT (2016-2020) 15 Early Stage Researchers worked on projects in the areas of Technology to support every day life; technology to promote meaningful activities; and health care technology.Three transversal objectives were adopted by INDUCT: 1) To determine the practical, cognitive and social factors needed to make technology more useable for people with dementia; 2) To evaluate the effectiveness of specific contemporary technology; and 3) To trace facilitators and barriers for implementation of technology in dementia care.The main recommendations resulting from the research projects are integrated in a web-based digital Best Practice Guidance on Human Interaction with Technology in Dementia which will be presented at the congress. The recommendations are meant to be helpful for different target groups, i.e. people with dementia, their formal and informal carers, policy makers, designers and researchers, who can easily select the for them relevant recommendations in the Best Practice Guidance by means of a selection tool. The main aim of the Best Practice Guidance is to improve the development, usage and implementation of technology for people with dementia in the three mentioned technology areas.This Best Practice Guidance is the result of the intensive collaborative partnership of INDUCT with academic and non-academic partners as well as the involvement of representatives of the different target groups throughout the INDUCT project.Acknowledgements: The research presented was carried out within the Marie Sklodowska Curie International Training Network (ITN) action, H2020-MSCA-ITN-2015, grant agreement number 676265.

Abstract Persons living with a recent diagnosis of dementia experience great uncertainty and stress as they and their families try to adjust to the new reality of their lives and futures. One fruitful strategy for intervening with these families is to include both the person living with dementia and their family care partner in the program. Although dyadic approaches are rare among early-stage programs, promising examples exist. The SHARE Program (Support, Health, Activities, Resources, and Education) is one exception where dyadic materials address: 1) current and long- term needs of care partners, and 2) how the family can develop a realistic plan of care based on their care values and preferences. This symposium describes the development and positive outcomes of the original SHARE intervention and the promising adaptations that expand how and to whom the intervention is delivered. Presentations explore: 1) the original SHARE for Dementia program and strategies for expanding its reach into chronic conditions populations (Orsulic-Jeras & Whitlatch), 2) a group version translated into Spanish (“EPIC: Early-stage Partners in Care,” Dr. Coon), and 3) the development of a remote needs assessment and unobtrusive in-home monitoring technology platform that guides care planning and helps to maintain independence (“SHARE-sense,” Dr. Miller). Discussion will focus on the challenges, unique solutions, and positive outcomes when adapting SHARE to different settings and populations (Dr. Zarit).

The article is aimed at forming an analytical basis for making decisions on determining the optimal role played by participants in financing partnership projects for the economic development of a state. The paper outlines the importance of distributing financial support efficiently in order to address problems related to the lack of funding and low efficiency of socially important projects implemented on a partnership basis. Statistical data testifying to the development of projects implemented in Ukraine on a partnership basis are considered. The most common forms of partnership agreements and financial support mechanisms used in partnership projects in Ukraine are also identified. The regions of Ukraine that are leaders and outsiders as for the number of partnership agreements concluded and / or implemented on their territory are identified. The effectiveness of various financial participation forms used by various parties to partnership projects is analyzed. To fulfill the task, the participation of potential investors is generalized by three sources of funding: state budget funds, local budget funds and other sources that include all extrabudgetary financial resources (own resources of program participants, businesses and individuals related to project implementation results, international organizations, as well as sponsorship and charitable funds, borrowed funds, etc.). Regression models have been constructed to determine the impact of the funding sources involved on the successful implementation of partnership projects in different areas (programs in economic, social and environmental areas are considered separately). Based on the modelling results, the elasticity coefficient has been calculated, which shows the extent to which the attraction of an individual funding source influences the success of the program. Conclusions are made on the extent to which the increase (or decrease) of the share of funding from a single source affects the success of the program in a certain area

Research background: the authors have explored that there are different idea management system (IMS) application types that could be used both locally and globally for diverse reasons and expected outcomes. There is ongoing research on how IMS could be applied for manageable idea management process. But there is a question – how do these IMS types help to set and achieve goals, and improve decision making? Purpose of the article: The article aims to clarify how an external and mixed web-based IMS could be used during COVID19 time for distance idea generation sessions, as well as, to solve complex issues such as decision making, goals’ setting and reaching them based on different idea generation sources and critical reflection on those ideas of evaluators. Methods: Literature review (data collection: systematic data collection from scientific data bases; data analysis: content analysis). The survey of n>400 enterprises with web-based IMS experience globally (data collection: a survey; data analysis: statistics). Findings & Value added: this paper explores how different types of web-based IMS could be applied as a tool and support system for decision making processes in general, decisions towards goal setting and its outreach. The research results provide also a practical contribution - it could help to choose the most appropriate IMS application type to reach estimated goals and to empower decision making.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the debate on the quality and accreditation of management education by examining the fit between the characteristics of current management academics in Portugal and recognised accreditation standards. For purposes of comparison, the authors use both general Portuguese teaching accreditation standards and specific international standards for management education. Design/methodology/approach – The authors analyse indicators of staff career positioning, tenure status, full time vs part-time, age, degree qualifications, field of training, level of academic inbreeding, internationalisation, research activity, professional activity, and the number of hours taught per week. The authors also examine the relationship between them, in light of accreditation standards, for all academic staff teaching in management degrees submitted for compulsory accreditation by the Portuguese accreditation agency. Findings – The reality found in this study shows gaps between the actual attributes of management academics and what can be considered appropriate attributes, according to the general consensus found in the literature and which is duly mirrored in common “qualified faculties” accreditation standards by Portuguese and international standards (AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS). Research limitations/implications – The findings relate to the Portuguese situation and the analysis developed should be extended to other contexts. Also, while the data, which were collected through a census, has a wide national scope, it only covers one academic year. Practical implications – This work has policy setting implications for degree accreditation and for developing capacity during the transitional periods when universities implement the mandatory minimum standards. It can also help universities to benchmark themselves against their peers as a diagnostic tool for elaborating improvement plans. Social implications – The massification of higher education has led to legitimate concerns about the quality of the services provided, and consequently accreditation procedures were devised to restore trust. However, policy makers must be aware of the impacts of their actions, namely the effects of degree accreditation, as their goals need to be achieved with the minimum negative impact on academic work. Originality/value – The authors work sheds light on the characteristics of those who teach management and how they align with the current accreditation policies that affect academia globally and, in the process, presents empirical evidence from Portugal, which is at a relatively early stage in the accreditation process.

The interpretation of photos and the processing of Google Earth imagery which allowed the “random” discovery, as a result of a non-systematical research, of a numerous marks of buried constructions in the wide area of the city of Larisa (Thessaly, Greece) is presented in this project. Additional data as aerial photographs over time, satellite images and the digital terrain model of the same area has been used. From the numerous marks, this project mainly focuses on three positions where the positive marks (soilmarks or/and cropmarks), circular or/and linear, reveal on a satisfying level covered construction of great dimensions. The ongoing research activity of the editorial team along with this research highlights the advantages of using Google Earth imagery in an attempt to “random” mark of unknown covered constructions, or, in the frame of a systematic survey of aerial and remote sensing archaeology, as additional and not exclusive source of information.

ABSTRACT Background  Few tools currently exist for effective, accessible delivery of real-time, workplace feedback in the clinical setting. Objective  We developed and implemented a real-time, web-based tool for performance-based feedback in the clinical environment. Methods  The tool (myTIPreport) was designed for performance-based feedback to learners on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Milestones and procedural skills. “TIP” stands for “Training for Independent Practice.” We implemented myTIPreport in obstetrics and gynecology (Ob-Gyn) and female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS) programs between November 2014 and May 2015. Residents, fellows, teachers, and program directors completed preimplementation and postimplementation surveys on their perceptions of feedback. Results  Preimplementation surveys were completed by 656 participants of a total of 980 learners and teachers in 19 programs (12 Ob-Gyn and 7 FPMRS). This represented 72% (273 of 378) of learners and 64% (383 of 602) of teachers. Seventy percent of participants (381 of 546) reported having their own individual processes for real-time feedback; the majority (79%, 340 of 430) described these processes as informal discussions. Over 6 months, one-third of teachers and two-thirds of learners used the myTIPreport tool a total of 4311 times. Milestone feedback was recorded 944 times, and procedural feedback was recorded 3367 times. Feedback addressed all ACGME Milestones and procedures programmed into myTIPreport. Most program directors reported that tool implementation was successful. Conclusions  The majority of learners successfully received workplace feedback using myTIPreport. This web-based tool, incorporating procedures and ACGME Milestones, may be an important transition from other feedback formats.

Given the increase in average lifespans in countries around the world, diseases that afflict the elderly are a major focus for scientists. Uppermost among these is dementia, a broad term which includes many types of cognitive decline from mild impairment to severe conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. We lose brain volume and function as we age, and it is this atrophy of different parts of the brain that leads to loss of cognitive function. Although atrophy takes many different forms and thus results in a range of conditions, there are commonalities between each that might be targets for treatment. One area of research is the possibility of using large doses of B vitamins to lower levels of the amino acid homocysteine, which has been linked to many conditions including cardiovascular disease and dementia. This is the focus of Professor Timothy Kwok's ongoing research at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Kwok is also a practising consultant geriatrician at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong and has been inspired to pursue this field of inquiry by the need for simple and inexpensive treatments which could be made available to large numbers of elderly patients. He says: 'A trial at the University of Oxford showed that lowering homocysteine levels led to a significant reduction in the rate of brain atrophy. However, many questions remain unanswered and our current two-year trial will hopefully give further insights into the benefits or otherwise of vitamin B supplementation. If a causative link can be found between vitamin B supplementation and a slower rate of cognitive decline, this would be an inexpensive and safe way of treating people at the early stage of disease. In addition, these vitamins could potentially be given as a preventative treatment in older people who are not yet showing signs of cognitive impairment. As Kwok says: 'Dementia is a major cause of dependency in old age and has a big impact on the people affected, their families and scarce medical resources. If supplementation could prevent dementia in people with early symptoms, this simple intervention could make a huge difference to the quality of life of elderly people and reduce the burden of dementia on national health services.'

Keeping machine running without failure is vital to maintain manufacturing productivity. Any loss in production and service due to equipment malfunction is unacceptable. The use of Web-based maintenance helps to detect defective machine in its early stage and thus avoid costly failure. It provides an easy way for the operator to evaluate the performance of the distant located machines. The architecture of our proposed Web-based maintenance has been redesigned to reduce the burden of the main server. The heavy loading situation which often occurs in the main server can be avoided. Beside architecture, several crypto mechanisms have been added to the system. With the aids of those crypto mechanisms, the security of the Web-based maintenance has been significantly enhanced. The data can be transferred safely and the accuracy of the results can be verified. Our Web-based maintenance is well equipped with Web-enabled and advanced fault diagnostic tools. It works more effectively and securely as compared to conventional Web-based maintenance.
