This study has two main objectives. The first is to examine the impact of Earnings Management (EM) on dividend policy for the Kuwait’s industrial and service sectors. The second is to sieve out the possible explanations for the conflicting results regarding this topic. Using Modified Jones Model, a sample of 46 companies listed on the Kuwait Stock Exchange with a total of (184) firm-year observations form the period 2011-2016 reveals an absence of a significant relation between EM and dividend policy. In addition, this paper posits a possible relationship between EM, dividend policy and market maturity.

The aim of this study was to find out the impact of earnings management on dividend policy of oil and gas companies listed at the Karachi stock exchange. The study uses annual data of oil and gas companies for the period from 2008 to 2015. The dependent and independent variables are dividend policy and earnings management and the three control variables are leverage, return on equity and firm size. Modified cross sectional Jones model (1995) was used for calculating discretionary accruals which has been used as proxy for earnings management whereas measurement of dividend policy has been proxy by dividend payout. The findings from regression analysis indicate that earnings management has insignificant relationship with dividend policy of selected firms in Pakistan. Financial crisis in the world and economic decline period are the main reasons of this relationship. In the decline period the firms try to increase manipulation in earnings as a result the company starts reducing dividend payments. It is concluded that there are some other factors that may influence the pattern of dividend payment in the firms.

However, as long as rapid development of TSE, necessity of such studies become more obvious in Iran. So, by analyzing data gathered from 86 listed firms at TSE for years 1380 to 1391, the relation between accounting conservatism and earnings management restrictions was tested using panel data. Givoly and Hayn (2000) approach for measuring accounting conservatism and adjusted jones model for measuring accruals based earnings management were used. This study aims to measure the impact that audit committees have on earnings management for companies listed on Tadawul Stock Exchange. The sample includes firms in the basic materials sector for the years 2017 and 2018. The modified Jones model is used to investigate the impact of audit committee characteristics (independence, financial expertise, size, number of meetings, and percentage of shares owned) on earnings management. The results show that the greater the audit committee’s independence, percentage of shares owned, and number of meetings held contribute to limited earnings management. However, no evidence is found to support that financial experience or audit committee size have an impact on earnings management.

This study aims to explore the impact of family ownership on the relationship among corporate social responsibility (CSR) and earning management (EM) in Pakistan. Data is collected from nonfinancial listed firms on Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSE) for the period 2009-2017. Our results of pooled ordinary least square regression indicate that CSR has significant negative impact on EM. Furthermore, results also indicate that association between CSR and EM is moderated by family ownership. Family firms which perform CSR activities are less involved in EM as compare to nonfamily firms perform CSR activities. This variation in behavior of EM in family and non-family firms can possibly be explained by socioemotional wealth theory. Keywords: Corporate Social Responsibility, Earnings Management, Family Ownership

Some cases of financial fraud invite inquiries about the effectiveness of corporategovernance mechanism in financial distress companies. This study empiricallyexamines whether the financial distress moderate the impact of corporate governancemechanism to earnings management. The sample of this study is manufacturingcompanies listed at Indonesia Stock Exchange for period 2010 -2012. Discretionaryaccruals are used as a proxy for earnings management, while financially distressed andnon-distressed firms are identified based on Altman Z-score test. Corporate governancemechanism is measured by four characteristics of the audit committee, i.e. size (totalnumber of audit committee members), independence (audit committee composition),activity(frequency of audit committee meeting), and expertise (the number of auditcommittee have finance or accounting background). This study finds that (1) financialdistress does not moderate the impact of total members of audit committee to earningsmanagement; (2) financial distress does not moderate the impact of frequency of auditcommittee meeting to earnings management; (3) financial distress does not moderatethe impact of audit committee composition to earnings management; (4)financialdistress moderates the impact of audit committee finance/accounting knowledge toearnings management. These results suggestthat the effectiveness corporate governanceis low, and finance/accounting literacy of audit committee should be alert.
